What Is Rosh Hashanah?

Rosh Hashanah is an important holiday on the Jewish calendar. According to the Jewish National Fund, Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year and is a celebration of the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve. Adherents to the Jewish faith wish each other a good, sweet year ahead on Rosh Hashanah, a day that is steeped in tradition. One such tradition is the sounding of the shofar, which the JNF notes are representative of the trumpet blast that sounded the coronation of kings. The sounding of the shofar also symbolizes a call to repentance. The shofar itself is a ram’s horn that calls to mind the story of the Blinding of Isaac, an event that occurred on Rosh Hashanah and involved a ram taking Isaac’s place as an offering to God. Of course, no celebration of Rosh Hashanah, which takes place over two days, is complete without a festive meal. Foods served during Rosh Hashanah celebrations tend to be sweet and are meant to symbolize hope for an enjoyable year ahead. In addition, the JNF says it is customary for Rosh Hashanah to eat foods with names that allude to blessing and prosperity. Rosh Hashanah begins September 15, 2023, at sundown and it concludes at nightfall on September 17, 2023.

Last month I wrote about advice for people looking to buy a home. The feedback was nice, which I appreciate, but a few people asked if I had any advice for people looking to sell their home. That prompted this month’s article: 12 tips for home sellers today.

1) Enhance curb appeal: First impressions matter! Clean the yard, trim bushes, mow the lawn, and consider adding some colorful flowers or plants to boost curb appeal.

2) Declutter and depersonalize: Clear out any unnecessary clutter and personal items from your home. This helps potential buyers envision themselves in the space and creates a cleaner, more appealing atmosphere.

3) Deep clean: Give your home a thorough cleaning before putting it on the market. Pay special attention to kitchens, bathrooms, floors, and windows. A clean and wellmaintained home will make a positive impression.

4) Make necessary repairs: Fix any visible issues like leaky faucets, broken tiles, or cracked walls. Addressing these problems before listing can prevent potential buyers from being deterred or making lower offers.

8) Market effectively: Work with a real estate agent to develop a comprehensive marketing strategy.

10) Highlight energyefficient features: If your home has energyefficient upgrades like solar panels, insulation, or energy-saving appliances, make sure to emphasize them. Many buyers value eco-friendly and costsaving features.

11) Provide thorough disclosure: A complete disclosure statement builds trust with buyers and avoids potential legal issues down the line.

12) Negotiate wisely: When you receive offers, work closely with your real estate agent to negotiate effectively. Consider not only the price but also other terms such as contingencies, closing dates, and repair requests.

Yom Kippur is an annual holiday in the Jewish faith. Considered the holiest day in Judaism, Yom Kippur is also known as the Day of Atonement. According to History. com, Yom Kippur marks the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe. Those 10 days represent a period of introspection and repentance. On Yom Kippur, faithful Jews are asked to make amends and seek forgiveness for sins committed during the previous 12 months. Yom Kippur has many traditions, including a roughly 25hour period of fasting and prayer. Jews believe that God judges all people’s fate for the coming year during the 10 Days of Awe, which begins with the Jewish New Year celebration of Rosh Hashanah. Due to the significance of Yom Kippur, Jews refrain from working on the holiday. That includes high-profile professional athletes. In fact, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax, a practicing Jew, famously refused to pitch in Game One of the 1965 World Series because the game was scheduled to take place on Yom Kippur. Religious services on Yom Kippur bear such significance that some congregations seek additional space to accommodate all worshippers. While the 25-hour fast is a significant component of the holiday, some people are exempt from fasting. Women who have recently given birth, the sick, and the elderly are allowed to eat during Yom Kippur. Those who observe the fast do so because it is believed to cleanse the body and spirit. As significant as the fast is, food still plays an essential role in Yom Kippur observations. For instance, feasts on the eve of Yom Kippur tend to be plentiful, so people who will fast can gather strength for the holiday. In addition, once the fast has ended, another festive meal takes place. Yom Kippur begins sunset of Sunday, September 24, 2023. Ends nightfall of Monday, September 25, 2023.

human kindness flowing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, volunteer participation was

at 23.2 percent, a drop of 7 percent between 2019 and 2021 – the largest decrease the survey has seen since its 2002 inception.

Special-needs individuals step in to do the most basic tasks to more intricate things such as data entry, interacting with donors and computer and office tasks.

“Our clients make the decision about which organizations they’d like to volunteer with,” says Christina Abbinanti of Life’s WORC in Garden City. She said that clients participate as part of the Program Without Walls that allows special-needs individuals to integrate into the community. The clients volunteer at a range of organizations throughout the week. “They also learn valuable job and interpersonal skills.”

At Hair We Share on Long Island, special-needs volunteers keep the doors

open and allow the allvolunteer organization to continue to provide free, hand-laced wigs to medical patients. The wigs, which average $4,000 each, are custom fitted to patients.

“Volunteers are our life blood,” says co-founder Dean Riskin. “We have no paid staff. We have seventyfive-thousand ponytails we are sitting on that need to be sorted, weighed and bagged and we couldn’t do it without them.”

In addition to getting a warm feeling about helping, special-needs volunteers hone important work and

Overdose Awareness Day Solemnized By Tree Lighting

Families, community leaders, civic organizations and town and county officials came together to pay tribute to the lives lost to overdose by lighting the Bayport Blue Point Library tree purple. The gathering marked International Overdose Awareness Day, while offering Narcan/ Harm Reduction Training; “Shed the Meds;” along with mental health resources.

“The Town of Islip has

been at the forefront of the Opioid/Heroin crisis, officially designating the Town of Islip Opioid Task Force in 2018 to address this issue,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. “Studies have shown that conversations about drugs and alcohol use and abuse can be the first step in prevention, and parents should consider opening the lines of communication about substance abuse as

early as preschool,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

On Wednesday, September 6th, the Town of Islip kicked-off Islip Goes Purple, a month-long event designed to bring awareness to recovery from addiction and life beyond.

Supervisor Carpenter, DA Tierney Host Financial Exploitation Prevention Seminar

Angie Carpenter, Islip Town Supervisor invited Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, along with ADAs and Detectives from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Bureau and the Suffolk County PD Financial Crimes Unit to the Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center in East Islip, for a seminar on how to prevent identity theft.

Participants learned valuable information on “what identity theft is; what can be done with one’s identity; how does it happen; can we help prevent it and what can I do if it happens to me.”

The District Attorney’s Office will be presenting this program at various Town of Islip Senior Centers in the coming months. Check back for future dates at a Senior Center in your community. Become A Volunteer With The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program

Compassionate women and men—both breast cancer survivors and non-breast cancer survivors— are being sought as volunteers. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is a nonprofit that has been advocating and supporting the community for 43 years. The virtual training will take place on four consecutive Mondays: October 30, November 6, November 13 and November 20, from 10 am to 1 pm. Attendance at all four sessions is essential. Volunteers will be trained in the following areas: community outreach, educational presentations, speaking engagements, publicity and fundraising. Those who have had breast cancer will also be trained to respond to calls to the Hotline.

Here’s what some of the program’s community of volunteers have to say about their experience:

Jeannie, age 68, from West Babylon; diagnosed in 1986.

I wanted to give back to the community and let women know they’re not alone. It was life-altering when I started volunteering 31 years ago. I speak Spanish and do lots of outreach, especially to underserved communities.

Lori, age 66, from Greenlawn; diagnosed in 2012

I am recently retired and wanted to do something to help people coping with breast cancer. I wish when I was

diagnosed I had known about the hotline where there were others who had “been there.” Someone to tell me “take a breath, I’m here for you. I know what you are feeling.” I have done several library outreaches and am involved with our new book club.

Tanya, age 55, from Wyandanch; diagnosed in 2020

I received so much support when I called the hotline that I want to provide that kind of help to others. I do peer support for two women— linking one woman recently diagnosed to resources and speaking with the mother of someone diagnosed with breast cancer who was having a hard time. I’ve also lobbied in Albany for more funds for the program.

Jeanne, age 51, from Elmont

Although I don’t have breast cancer, as a nurse, I know that many women do not know about breast health and are going undiagnosed. I am originally from Haiti and so am able to speak with callers in French and Creole, as well as English.
