Kinney elementary schools participated in an inspiring multicultural Day in Clay potter’s wheel workshop with professional artist, sculptor and potter Cliff Mendelson. The full-day event featured hands-on exploration of vessel making and design, empowering the students with knowledge concerning how vessels are designed and their connection to various cultures.
Samples of finished works were discussed in light of the history of art in various cultures and how its applications are alive in the world today, including African, Native American, Greek and Asian influences. The students inscribed patterns and symbols on newly made vessels using ancient sgraffito techniques. A practicing artist in the community, Mendelson currently teaches at the Westchester Art Workshop and has taught at Parsons School of Design, Greenwich House Pottery and Hunter College. “The students enjoyed learning about the process and effort involved in creating ceramics pieces and gained and appreciation for the skill involved making any work of art,” Mendelson said. “Through this program, they were able to witness someone who succeeds at what he enjoys most, while turning it into his life’s work. The students were exposed to seeing an artist create original works of art in an atmosphere that encouraged their inquiry, and involvement.”

Ryan Gorman has joined the music faculty at Islip Middle School for the 2022-2023 school year. He will teach sixth, seventh and eighth-grade band and jazz band, and also serve as assistant director for Islip High School’s marching band.He previously worked as the band director at Weehawken High School in New Jersey, winning three USBands State Championships and a national championship with the program, before moving to Long Island this summer.Gorman holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. While at Rutgers, he studied piano, trumpet and voice, and performed with the Rutgers Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds and Kirkpatrick Choir. He was also a member of the Rutgers Marching Band, performing at Super Bowl XLVIII and on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”

Historically high fuel prices will undoubtedly prove to be one of the defining stories of 2022. As the average price for a gallon of gas reached heights drivers might never have imagined as recently as February 2022, some might have wondered just how much that same gallon might have cost roughly 100 years ago. According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the average price for a gallon of gas in 1929 was 21 cents. Inflation calculators indicate that 21 cents in 1929 would have about the same purchasing power as $3.59 has in 2022, suggesting that drivers had a far less painful trip to the pump in 1929 than they have had for much of 2022.
Helping You Help Others
Although they do not have a physical cafe yet, since they started in 2016, they have hosted countless “meal events”, primarily at the VFW Hall on Edwards Street in Patchogue. Their meal events are socially engaging events, usually running for about 2.5 hours multiple times a month. They are meant to bring the community together, while serving anyone who attends a fresh healthy meal. This nonprofit is also licensed to offer the FEAST Program. The FEAST Program is a comprehensive health program, which offers in-person classes. FEAST stands for Food Education, Access, Support and Together. “We at Harmony Cafe believe that a healthy life consists of whole foods, whole people and whole communities,” said Rosemarie. “However, many people don’t have access to healthy fresh food, don’t have a strong support system and feel isolated from the community. Unhealthy diets is among some of the key contributors to the dramatic rise in obesity and dietary diseases affecting people in our country today. In order to address these issues, the FEAST Program serves parents or heads or households through our comprehensive 12-week Wellness Program. It is a very successful program!”

At 10:03 a.m., four hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 93 into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.Membersof the WAA family, including staff, volunteers, Gold Star and Blue Star Families, and veterans, will join to share in the patriotic act of waving the flag, and sharing the stories of those who raised their hand to serve following the events of that fateful day. The flag waving will start at 8:46 am ET, when on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, five hijackers took control of American Airlines Flight 11 and flew it into the heart of New York City and the northern facade of the World Trade Center’s North Tower (1 WTC) and end at 10:03 am ET when four hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 93 into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Penn., on the same day. You too can join by tuning in to the organization’s Official Facebook page, to share pictures and videos from your own
community flag waving. Participants are encouraged to take video and pictures of their participation in the national flag waving and share them with WAA, their family, and their friends to help REMEMBER, HONOR and TEACH the generation born after 9/11, how hard times can strengthen us as a nation. WAA waves the American Flag every Tuesday morning between 9-10 a.m. ET and encourages the public to join them. Each week, messages of unity and remembrance are shared and the legacy of the “Freeport Flag Ladies” – who took to the Hill in Freeport on 9/11/01 following the events of that morning to hoist the flag and share a message of strength – lives on as it did each week for 18 years. After they retired on September 11, 2019, WAA took over the tradition and continues the weekly flag waving along US Route 1 in Jonesboro, Maine. “Each Tuesday, we are joined by dozens of members of the local community and curious people stopping to be part of something meaningful,” said Karen Worcester, Executive Director, Wreaths Across America. “I hope people will join us this year, both on the anniversary of 9/11, as well as each Tuesday moving forward. This flag waving has taken on new meaning for us all and given a spark of hope for unity and patriotism during this difficult time in our country.”
