Happy 95th Birthday Hertha Shank!
Longtime Town of Islip resident Hertha Shank celebrated her 95th birthday with friends and family at the Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center recently. Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter presented Hertha with a citation recognizing her exemplary life, a single mom who worked as a bookkeeper
and raised two children, Robert and Christine in their home in Country Village where Hertha has lived for 67 years.
“Our Town has the distinct honor of recognizing truly extraordinary individuals who live their lives with determination and drive, leading by example to be a force for positive change in
their community. On behalf of the Islip Town Board, we wish you enduring joy and happiness,” said Supervisor Carpenter.
Hertha has been an active member of the Joyce Fitzpatrick senior center for more than 20 years. Hertha is beloved grandmother to Kerri and Sean, and a devoted friend.

There are procedures to take at the scene of an accident; call police, exchange information, file a claim, etc.
But, what do you do AFTER you have left the scene of an accident? What are your next steps to get a repair and keep your expenses down?
The first obstacle you will face is filing your claim. Do you file with your insurer or the other party? If they hit you, you will want them to pay for the cost of repairs, a rental car and incidental expenses. Ideally, you will file with them and they’ll immediately take over responsibility for your expenses. Of course, life is not ideal. You should expect delays. Expect them. Don’t be impatient. The other company MUST reach their insured and

debrief them. Then, they must go through steps to assign responsibility, whether fully or in part. And, if the case is not cut and dried, the process may take years.
If you are injured, then you MUST file with your own insurance company. New York is a No-Fault State. This is a misnomer.
No-Fault means that, regardless of who is at fault, your own insurer will take care of your medical claims.
If you file the Collision claim with your company then they may go after the other company (a process called subrogation), but you will have to lay out your deductible and for rental expenses until a decision is made.

East Islip Names Dr. John Genova As New Math And Science Director
The East Islip School District has appointed Dr. John Genova as the new math and science director, effective Aug. 21. He replaces Michael Hansen, currently the principal of East Islip Middle School.
Dr. Genova had served as the coordinator of mathematics K-12 at the Syosset Central School District from 2017-2023. He previously worked as the coordinator of math K-12 at the Middle Country School District from 20162017, and as a math teacher at North Babylon High School from 2007-2016.
A Holbrook resident, Dr. Genova earned his master’s degree in mathematics from Stony Brook University, and a 2018 doctorate in educational administration and leadership from St. John’s University.
“I’m excited to join a great team and support student achievement and growth in both math and science at East Islip,” Dr. Genova said. “We’re going to build upon the success that’s taken place here and advance together.”

This year the Long Island Heart Walk will take place on Sunday, September 10, 2023 , at Jones Beach, Field 5. The Long Island Heart Walk supports a movement to get America walking to live longer, heart-healthy lives. Registration begins at 8:30am and the walk is scheduled to start at 9:30am.

East Islip High School Hosts Ambassadors Of Compassion Kick-Off
East Islip High School hosted the Ambassadors of Compassion program kick-off on Aug. 25 at Sal Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium. The event included 24 school districts and almost 2,000 student-athletes. The Ambassadors of Compassion program aims to open lines of communication, with the goal to provide studentathletes with the skills necessary to speak to their peers and overcome today’s challenges, as well as empower them for lifelong success. East Islip High School completed
the program during the previous academic year.
Speakers included Ambassadors of Compassion founder Eric Hannah and his wife Jody Hannah, Sayville High School graduate and former Wisconsin and Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan, Super Bowl champion and television analyst Spencer Tillman, “Boomer & Gio” radio talk show host Gregg Giannotti and “Fast and Furious” actor Noel Gugliemi.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, the owner of two dogs is looking for a foster. She is presently living in her car, but is actively seeking employment and a new home. She is urgently trying to find an individual to temporarily care for both until she is able to do so again properly.
Wolf is a 10 year old Husky and Kay is a 5 year old Texas Heeler Mix. They are very attached to one another, therefore the foster must be willing to take both. They are friendly, trained, up to date on all shots, good with children and are spayed/neutered. Wolfie does well with all
dogs and cats and Kay is good with medium to large sized dogs.

Become A Volunteer With The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program
Compassionate women and men—both breast cancer survivors and nonbreast cancer survivors—are being sought as volunteers.
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is a non-profit that has been advocating and supporting the community for 43 years. The virtual training will take place on four consecutive Mondays: October 30, November 6, November 13 and November 20, from 10 am to 1 pm. Attendance at
all four sessions is essential.
Volunteers will be trained in the following areas: community outreach, educational presentations, speaking engagements, publicity and fundraising.
Those who have had breast cancer will also be trained to respond to calls to the Hotline.
Here’s what some of the program’s community of volunteers have to say about their experience:
Jeannie, age 68, from West Babylon; diagnosed in
1986.
I wanted to give back to the community and let women know they’re not alone. It was life-altering when I started volunteering 31 years ago. I speak Spanish and do lots of outreach, especially to underserved communities.
Lori, age 66, from Greenlawn; diagnosed in 2012
I am recently retired and wanted to do something to help people coping with breast cancer. I wish when I
was diagnosed I had known about the hotline where there were others who had “been there.” Someone to tell me “take a breath, I’m here for you. I know what you are feeling.” I have done several library outreaches and am involved with our new book club.

I received so much support when I called the hotline that I want to provide that kind of help to

others. I do peer support for two women—linking one woman recently diagnosed to resources and speaking with the mother of someone diagnosed with breast cancer who was having a hard time. I’ve also lobbied in Albany for more funds for the program.

Although I don’t have breast cancer, as a nurse, I know that many women do not know about breast health
and are going undiagnosed. I am originally from Haiti and so am able to speak with callers in French and Creole, as well as English.
The process of becoming a volunteer involves having an initial interview, followed by the four training sessions. After the final session, there is an exit interview.

Art Expression Program By ADRC Culminates In A Touching Art Exhibit In Honor Of World Alzheimer’s Day – September 21, 2023
The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) is proud to announce an inspiring Art Exhibit in collaboration with the Islip Arts Council in Bay Shore, New York. Artwork will be showcased beginning September 18 –September 30 from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. A reception recognizing the artists with their family members will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Art Gallery located in the Westfield Shopping Center, Bay Shore, NY at the end by DICK’S Sporting Goods. This exhibition marks the culmination of a yearlong art program, for over 100 local artists, that has spanned multiple sites across Long Island.
The Art Expression Program, a cornerstone initiative of ADRC, has
provided a profound avenue for individuals to engage their minds through the transformative power of art. This innovative program has consistently aimed to achieve the following objectives:
• Facilitating Communication through Diverse Art Forms: Participants are encouraged to communicate their thoughts and emotions through a wide array of artistic mediums, fostering connections beyond words.
• Mind Stimulation through Creative Creation: The act of creation stimulates participants’ cognitive faculties, invigorating their mental capacities.
• Boosting Self-Esteem through Relational Bonds: The program has
nurtured self-esteem by fostering meaningful relationships and interactions within a supportive community.
• Celebrating Artistic Diversity: ADRC embraces and celebrates every artwork created by participants, recognizing the uniqueness and personal stories behind each piece.
In the eloquent words of Therapy Techniques Using the Creative Arts (2002), “The creative arts stimulate our senses, our bodies, our thoughts, and feelings. For a period, we transcend the bounds of time, space, and physical limitations. Outside our normal realm of existence, we are free to think, feel, and express what seems natural to us.”
Each artwork on
display carries the weight of unique memories, rekindling a tapestry of lived experiences.
ADRC is a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization that offers FREE services and programs to families throughout Long Island. Our mission is to provide care, support, and educational programs for families in need, and to be advocates for local families who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. All funds raised stay on Long Island. In 2022, ADRC served over 1000 families with care consultations, support groups, educational workshops, and therapy programs.

Lightning Warriors To Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon
will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.
“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the
finish line and for those first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.
All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and post-
race refreshments.
Participating in youth triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more self-esteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”

Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.
The Mini Maniac event is the largest sanctioned kids triathlon on Long
