Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board were proud to recognize a group of Town of Islip Ocean Lifeguards who facilitated in the rescue of three beachgoers while on duty at Kismet’s ocean-side beach.

On Saturday, July 29, 2023, at approximately 1:30 pm, Ocean Lifeguards Luke Olsen, Noah Chernik and Peter Lepore observed three swimmers caught in a strong rip tide. The swimmers were quickly pulled 20 yards past the breaker line, and

continued to drift, requiring an immediate rescue from the lifeguard team.

Leaping quickly into action, Luke Olsen ran to the water proceeding directly to the swimmers, despite injuring his ankle when entering the rough surf. As Luke swam rescue equipment out to the swimmers, lifeguard Peter Lepore assisted feeding a rescue line from the shore, while lifeguard Noah Chernik proceeded through the water to assist Luke with the swimmers.

Jazz Greats Honored At Pinelawn

Special Tribute Celebrates Legendary Jazz Musicians Laid To Rest At Pinelawn

John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, and Guy Lombardo were honored on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum during a special musical tribute celebrating the legendary jazz greats laid to rest on the property.

Guests attended the free event which was the first tribute Pinelawn has ever organized to honor the legendary jazz musicians. The noted Silver Arrow Band, which has performed around the world and with award winning musical artists including Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Herbie Hancock & Quincy Jones will perform for guests, under the stars, in Pinelawn’s Louis Natalie Mall, home to many Pinelawn events.

“A very special evening

was planned where, for the first time, we honored the extraordinary jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn. Each musician has significantly contributed to the history of jazz and 20th century music and we were honored and humbled to share this history with the community,” said Justin Locke, President, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum.

About the Jazz Musicians

John Coltrane was a 20th century iconic American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, composer and musical giant. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz. John Coltrane died on July 17, 1967 at Huntington Hospital, Huntington, Long Island.

Count Basie, born William James Basie, was an American jazz musician and American institution that personified the grandeur and excellence of jazz. Count Basie is considered one of the greatest bandleaders of all time. He was the arbiter of big-band swing, establishing swing as a lasting music style. The legendary Count Basie Orchestra still performs today. In 1924, Count Basie moved to New York City. Count Basie died on April 26, 1984.

Lloyd Trotman was known as the “sideman to the stars,” an American jazz bassist who performed alongside noted jazz, R&B, Dixieland and rock artists including Duke Ellington, Ben E. King and the Platters. He resided in Huntington, Long Island between 1962

and 2007. Lloyd Trotman died on October 3, 2007.

Guy Lombardo, born Gaetano Alberto Lombardo, was a Canadian and American Big Band leader known for his festive approach to New Year’s Eve through his famous recording of Auld Lang Syne. He performed with the Royal Canadians charting yearly hits. Guy Lombardo lived in Freeport, Long Island on South Grove Street, later renamed “Guy Lombardo Way.” Guy Lombardo died on November 5, 1977.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, the owner of two dogs is looking for a foster. She is presently living in her car, but is actively seeking employment and a new home. She is urgently trying to find an individual to temporarily care for both until she is able to do so again properly.

Wolf is a 10 year old Husky and Kay is a 5 year old Texas Heeler Mix. They are very attached to one another, therefore the foster must be willing to take both. They are friendly, trained, up to date on all shots, good with children and are spayed/neutered. Wolfie does well with all

On Friday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island summer food collection drive comes to West Babylon.

Food collection bins and a drive-through option will be set up at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon, where members of the public can donate nonperishable items and household essentials for neighbors facing food insecurity. PSEG Long Island is giving out reusable shopping bags and LED lightbulbs as a thank you.

With your help and the generous donations of fellow Long Islanders, the initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals during July, August and September. Last year, thanks to your kindness, the equivalent of more than 42,000 meals was collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative.

Dorothy “Dot” Oliveri was born on August 4, 1933 in Mastic, NY. Growing up, she spent her summers at her grandfather’s farm before graduating Center Moriches High School in 1951. Upon graduating, she married Earl Rowland and welcomed two daughters, Diane and Debra; and in 1974, she would marry again to Carl Oliveri, gaining two stepsons Nat

and Al, creating a beautiful and loving blended family.

Dorothy began her career at the Brookhaven National Lab as the Supervisor of Mail Distribution, before going on to the Connetquot School District, dedicating over 20 years in the Guidance Department at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School. An avid gardener, for over 41 years she has volunteered as a member and Master Gardener of the Bayard Cutting Arboretum Horticultural Society.

Dorothy is a proud mother and devoted grandmother, having

continued to serve as an adored member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sayville and as a member of the Ockers Senior Club. She loves to travel and stays active through walking and exercise classes.

“Throughout her life, Dot has lived with grace and respect, and over the course of an extraordinary 90 years, has defined a legacy for all who know her to admire. On behalf of the Islip Town Board, we wish you a very Happy Birthday Dot,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

“Tanker Foes” To Put Allied And Enemy Armor “On The Road”

As The Museum Of American Armor And Nassau County Pay Tribute To All Those Who Have Served This Labor Day Weekend

On Labor Day Weekend, Saturday, September 2nd, and Sunday, September 3rd between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, will present “Tanker Foes” that will allow visitors to see in motion historic Allied and replica enemy armor used by combatants during World War II.

The armor program will take place adjacent to the Armor Museum. Among the museum’s inventory are full size operational German replica armor meant to underscore the courage and sacrifice of American forces required to confront and defeat an implacable foe nearly 80 years ago.

The legendary Sherman tank and M18 Hellcat will be driven within museum grounds, passing a replica Tiger tank, one of the most feared weapons on the World War II battlefield. Other armor in operation will include a tank recovery vehicle, recon armor cars that liberated the Nazi death camps, a British Bren Carrier similar to those that came ashore at Normandy, and a broad range of other historic military vehicles.

The program is made possible, in part, through the support of the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums, PSEG Long Island, Squad Security, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, BDG, Ltd., and the Bristal Assisted Living.

The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, is inside the grounds of Old Bethpage Village Restoration (OBVR) and is open year around, Wednesday and Fridays through Sundays. Recommended admission donations for entry are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and veterans and children between the ages of 5 and 12.
