House of Juice Newlyweds Nathaniel and Emily Larson of West Babylon opened House of Juice in West Islip on August 9th. This new business is located in the Great South Bay Commons shopping center off of Sunrise Highway in West Islip and is open 7 days a week (Monday Friday from 6:00 AM-8:00 PM and Saturday - Sunday from 8:00 AM-6:00 PM).

Don’t let the name deceive you, they sell a lot more than just juices! House of Juice also offers smoothies, acai bowls, wraps, paninis, avocado toast, and daily breakfast or lunch specials.

“This is the lifestyle that we live by,” said Nathaniel and Emily. “We felt this was the perfect location for this business.”

Mr. and Mrs. Larson first met on Fire Island, where

they both worked in delis.

Aside from owning and running this new business, they are also successful young professionals in their own careers. Emily is a school librarian at St. Anthony’s High School and Nathaniel is a real estate salesperson with Daniel Gale Sotheby’s.

The couple designed House of Juice with a lot more in mind than just selling food and drinks. House of Juice places high importance on allergen-safety, especially since owner/operator Emily has severe allergies herself.

They want community members with allergies to feel like their business is a safe place they can eat. They offer a variety of allergy-friendly substitutions for just about every major allergy, from gluten to dairy to tree nuts.

Additionally, they want to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Therefore they will be donating all of their compost to local farms!

A grand opening event will take place later this month, but until then, stop by, say hi and grab one of their delicious menu items!

Within minutes, the police arrived and Gary directed the officers to the woods, where the robber was apprehended.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College.

Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year.

Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board recognized at the August Town Board meeting, 10 year-old Oliver Rivadeneyra who for the past 5 years, has been selling lemonade, limeade and baked goods from “Oliver’s Lemonade Stand” outside his Islip Terrace house.

Oliver helped his father build the lemonade stand back in 2015, and shortly thereafter, began looking for something meaningful to do with his earnings.

He became aware of St.

Jude Children’s Hospital through watching television with his grandmother. He was touched by the stories of the children of St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and decided he wanted to help.

Since 2015, at the end of every summer, Oliver donates the proceeds from “Oliver’s Lemonade Stand” to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. To date, he has donated more than $10,000.

“Oliver is a selfless and unique 10 year-old, who in his meaningful way, saw an

opportunity to have a real impact on the mission of St. Jude Children’s Hospital, which is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases. Oliver is a shining example of the goodness here in the Town of Islip,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

In addition to his bustling lemonade stand, Oliver plays baseball and football, and enjoys spending time with his family and his puppy.

Learning About Money Teams of second graders at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently worked to open temporary class stores at “Ms. Mercurio’s Market” during their unit on money.

The students began by choosing store names, organizing their store rules and displaying the rules on store banners, which were then hung up in preparation for the next phase of the project. After

they finished the planning phase of their store, they visited the “warehouse” to decide which items they wanted to sell at each store. Each team member was responsible for paying teacher Patrice Mercurio for every item, using their own real coins brought from home.

Next, the children set up their stores with the items they purchased at the warehouse and took turns shopping at

the various stores in the market. They needed to pay for their purchases, using real money, and the store vendors counted the coins to make sure that they were using the correct amount. The coins were then returned to each child by the next day.

“It was a fun day and I believe that all the children learned some true life skills during this lesson,” Mercurio said.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services and the Town of Islip will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets on Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brookwood Hall located at 50 Irish Lane in East Islip, NY. Although the clinic is available to all county residents, the quantity of vaccine is limited and available only while supplies last. All dogs must be on leashes and all cats and ferrets must be in

carriers.

Rabies, a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system, is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies.

Pets and livestock can get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them against infection.

New York State and Suffolk County laws require that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinating

pets not only provides protection for the animals but also acts as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people.

Although no raccoons have tested positive for the rabies virus in Suffolk County since 2009, three to six percent of the bats that are tested annually are positive for rabies.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services recommends the following precautions to protect your pets and

Sun Protection Tips For Children As we inch closer to September, many families may want to take advantage of the last full summer month by spending a lot of time outdoors. But whether you’re barbecuing in the backyard or taking a vacation at the beach, it’s important to remember sun protection for any little ones enjoying the summer sun with you. Babies are especially vulnerable to sun damage due to their relative lack of melanin, the skin pigment that provides some sun protection, so protecting them from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation is imperative.

“All of the sun damage we receive as children adds up and greatly increases skin cancer risk later in life,” says

Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation.

“That’s why it’s so important that parents make sun protection for infants and toddlers a priority and eventually teach children these habits that will benefit them for many years to come.”

The Skin Cancer Foundation wants parents and caregivers to know that skin cancer is highly preventable and offers the following tips to help keep young children sun-safe for the rest of the summer and all year long: Seek Shade. Avoid direct sun exposure during peak sun hours, between 10 AM and 4 PM, and use an umbrella while on the beach. On walks, keep to the shady

side of the street and use a sun shield on your stroller.

Cover Up. Keep your baby covered up with a brimmed hat and lightweight clothing that fully covers the arms and legs. For added protection, look for special clothing marked with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 30 or more.

Be Careful in the Car. While glass screens out most UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, UVA rays can penetrate windows. Like UVB rays, UVA rays damage DNA and can lead to skin cancer. By law, front windshields are treated to filter out most UVA, but side and rear windows generally aren’t. Consider buying a UV shield, which you can

hang over any window that allows sunlight to reach the child’s car seat. Another option is to install professional UV-blocking window film.

Start Sunscreen at 6 Months. Since infants’ skin is so sensitive, it’s best to keep them out of the sun completely.

Beginning at 6 months of age, you can introduce sunscreen use. Choose a broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Look at active ingredients; zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are good choices, because these inorganic filters are less apt to cause a skin reaction. You may want to test sunscreen on the inside of your baby’s wrist. If the child has a little irritation, try

another sunscreen.

Use Sunscreen As Directed. Use sunscreen on all exposed areas not covered by clothing, such as the back of the hands, face, ears and neck. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and reapply it every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating.

Toddlers rarely stand still, so you may need to get creative with your sunscreen application routine.

Sunscreen sticks work well for the face and hands, since the child is less likely to rub the product into their eyes. Sprays are another good option. Make sure to apply the sunscreen evenly and liberally all over exposed skin, then rub in. For the face, spray into your hands,

then apply to your child’s face.
