The AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 18 located at 141 Carleton Avenue in East Islip, will be hosting a School Supply Drive starting August 1st, and ending September 7th, 2023.

Items to be collected are new school supplies for students in the area. All the basic tools: Pencils,

The Town of Islip Parks Foundation broke ground on its first-ever Serenity Gardens, a much-anticipated inclusive “park within a park” that will cater to people with visual and hearing impairments; Alzheimer’s, or dementia, those on the autism spectrum; seniors; veterans, and all who enjoy the beauty of nature and the outdoors.

Located on the grounds of Brookwood Hall, Serenity Gardens will be a first-ofits-kind park in the Town, providing people of all abilities a way to enjoy nature, in an environment constructed for their individual needs.

“This, of course, would not have been possible without the dedicated members of the private nonprofit Parks Foundation of Islip Town, and our devoted community, whose donations ensure all $2 million of this garden park is entirely funded free of any burden to taxpayers,” said Islip Town Supervisor,

Serenity Gardens To Cater To All Abilities

Angie Carpenter. “The formation of this Islip Parks Foundation has really been a dream come true for me, and something I was proud to spearhead and make a priority,” said the Supervisor.

Once complete, Serenity Gardens will feature lush foliage and greenery to promote tranquility; fragrant plants and flowers; a garden with a braille system; a walking labyrinth made of stones; sensory walking paths with mulch, tactile pads, rubber and gravel; wind chimes, as well as a sensory wall.

Wide walking paths will surround the entire park and divide it into four quadrants. With the groundbreaking, the Town will begin the process of prepping for these individual components, the first being a large gazebo that will anchor each of the quadrants at the center.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience And Long Island Cares Join Forces To Combat Summertime Food Insecurity

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience at Samanea New York (located at 1500 Old Country Road, Westbury, NY) is partnering with Long Island Cares (www.LICares.org) to help fight food insecurity during the summer through August 6.

Long Islanders who purchase a ticket and donate one bag of groceries (containing more than one item) will receive one complimentary ticket per ticket holder to the immersive event as a thankyou for their contribution.

“Long Island has warmly welcomed Beyond Van Gogh into their community since we opened in March, and we are proud to team up with Long Island Cares to give back,” said Justin Paquin, President, Paquin Exhibitions & Theatrical, Division of Paquin Entertainment Group. “Beautiful art can change

how we see the world, and through our partnership with Long Island Cares, hopefully, we can help make sure fewer children go hungry this summer.”

Long Islanders can drop the food donations into the exhibit’s Long Island Cares collection bins during the event. This food drive aims to alleviate food insecurity, specifically for children who may not have access to school meals during the summer break. Tickets can be purchased online at www.vangoghlongisland. com.

“We’re very excited to partner with ‘Beyond Van Gogh’ to raise awareness of food insecurity on Long Island, which impacts 221,000 people, including 65,000 children,” said Paule Pachter, President & CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc.The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank. “When a family donates a bag of food and

experiences the sights and sounds of this incredible Van Gogh experience, they will come away feeling very good that they were able to help their neighbors in need.”

To donate to Long Island Cares, ensure that all non-perishable items are unexpired and unopened. Acceptable donations include canned soups, tuna, vegetables, fruit, pasta packages, crackers, juice boxes, canned proteins, juice bottles, cereals, and granola bars. We welcome the generosity of our visitors and ask that they consider a donation of at least two or more items.

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, produced by Paquin Entertainment Group, is on Long Island for a limited engagement. This immersive experience features more than 300 of Vincent Van Gogh’s

iconic artworks and takes the art lover into a threedimensional world that exhilarates the senses.

To help get the food drive started, King Kullen, ShopRite of Bay Shore and ShopRite of Massapequa

are each donating 250 pounds of food to help fill the collection bins that will be on site for four weeks.

Tech Students Complete Yearlong Home Improvement Project

During the course of the 2022-2023 school year, students in Jesse Eilbeck’s technology class at Islip High School completed an impressive full-year construction project in home improvement. The course was divided into two sections. The academic portion covered hand drawing, estimating, presentations of student ideas on reconfiguration of spaces, measurement, material costs, contractors and specialists, and

residential construction codes.

The second section featured a building area encompassing the most basic forms of hands-on construction that can be simulated on a small scale in the form of a small wall unit. Topics included rough framing; basic plumbing including waste lines, hot and cold feed lines, and proper venting for water flow; rough electrical; insulation and drywall; and tape and spackle.

“The objective of the course was to give a comprehensive understanding of how to improve your living area,” Eilbeck said. “Many times, people have interesting ideas but pay others to implement them. Other people take on improvement projects in their homes to save money. Whatever the motivations, setting reasonable goals and building on those ideas are important in this course.”

Join Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum for its 6th Annual Ladybug Release event on Sunday, August 6th, as they demonstrate the use of integrated pest management to control a common pest, the Aphid. At this popular free kid-friendly event, Pinelawn explains how Aphids cause harm to the health of a variety of plant material and how we can control

their population by introducing their natural predator, the Lady Beetle (also known as the Ladybug).

This is a fun, hands-on event as guests release over 400,000 ladybugs in Pinelawn’s rose gardens. Each child can create a ladybug craft to take home and explain all they have learned.

Founder and CEO of Breakthrough Intensive Physical Therapy, Dr. Christine Astarita, will be running 100 miles within 24 hours on September 9th & 10th, 2023 while wheeling Breakthrough clients in an adaptive stroller to fundraise and aid support for the special needs community. Dr. Astrarita will be running from the Montauk Lighthouse to the Breakthrough office, stopping at the homes of the Angela’s House 501(c)3 along the route.

This is the second Run to Breakthrough fundraiser event that Christine and her team are hosting. Back in 2021, she ran 85 miles

With the help of the community’s donations and local businesses sponsoring the event, over $20,000 was raised for Angela’s House (Long Island based non-profit organization that assists families caring for children with special health care needs, the chronically ill, medically fragile, or those suffering from a life threatening illness). This year, Christine will also be giving away THREE prizes to the top 3 families who create a team on the fundraiser’s website and

raise the most money to support the cause. The first place winner will be receiving a $3,000.00 credit towards their sessions at Breakthrough. The Second place winner will receive a $2,000.00 credit and the third place winner will receive a $1,000.00 credit towards Breakthrough PT sessions.

Reflecting on the last year’s challenges and experiences, Dr. Astarita decided that she wanted to make the theme of this year’s run, Resilience.

“These children and their families don’t get to choose their challenges. They face adversity every single day; worrying about medical

procedures, medication changes, disruptions in services, advocating for their child’s rights/being their child’s voice, long hospital stays… the list can go on and on. These families define resilience.

As I’ve said so many times in the past, our families and clients have taught me more than I could ever have given to them. 2021 was an 85 mile journey that although I may have been physically carrying our families through, they carried my heart. How?

Because they taught me that when it gets really hard, like really really hard…that you can’t stay in that forever.

Angela’s House is a Non-Profit Long Island based organization that gives a helping hand to families that have children with special health care needs. They assist over 670 families that take care of their kids at home (providing medical equipment, nursing support,

medications, therapies, and making sure homes are handicapped accessible). Additionally, they provide a safe and nurturing environment in their three “Angela’s Houses” for those who are unable to live at home anymore (homes with 24 hour nursing care). 25 years ago, this organization was founded by the Policastro family as a result of the real life crisis they personally lived through, with their daughter Angela. Because they have first hand experience having a child with special health care needs, their approach and passion for helping other families is so ignited.
