Rotarians Honor Interact Club Members of East Islip High School’s Interact Club were recently honored by the Rotary Club of the Islips at the organization’s meeting at the Irish Coffee Pub, with Rotary Club President Dennis Ciano congratulating the students for their “service above self.”

Interact Club members perform community service activities and work with Rotarians to complete local projects throughout the year.

This past school year, the students and Rotarians planted a vegetable garden at Brookwood Hall. Members of both clubs are tending the gardens and the vegetables will be donated to a local food pantry.

Six Earn Seal Of Biliteracy Islip High School recognized six students on June 18 for earning the Islip School District Seal of Biliteracy. This was the second year that Islip has bestowed this prestigious honor, offered by the New York State Education Department, which recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English.

The honored students were Christian Guerrero (project on El Salvador), Nicole Huaylinos (project

on Peru), Harold Martinez (project on Argentina), Bianka Morales (project on Guatemala), Isabella Pollina (project on Cuba) and Leonardo Soto (project on Colombia).

The Seal of Biliteracy affirms the value of diversity in a multilingual society, recognizes the value of world and home language instruction in schools, encourages the study of languages, identifies high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers, provides universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission and prepares

students with 21st century skills.

“Our district has been recognizing students for their bilingualism, biliteracy and crosscultural competence with the Seal of Biliteracy since its inception in 2018,” said Priscilla Zarate, the district’s ENL and world language coordinator.

“The first year, only one student from the high school received this award. This year, we were excited to recognize six students. Next year, we are expecting 15 students to work on earning the Seal of Biliteracy.”

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum!

There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or

Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great team building and community leadership opportunity for your employees.

3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am.

4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors!

A Pair Of Prestigious Awards AnnMarie Mills of Islip Middle School recently won the Suffolk County Science Teachers Association’s Middle School Teacher of the Year award as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators.

Mills recently completed the Greentree Foundation

Teacher’s Ecology Workshop, developing a mature-centered outdoor classroom science curriculum which incorporated local ecosystems in all units as well as emphasizing the importance of regular outdoor learning. She also adopted a place-based education philosophy in which students use Long Island ecology and

environmental issues as primary learning resources for learning. She collaborated with Molloy College and CERCOM’s Crab Club to raise five juvenile horseshoe crabs in her classroom and worked with the Seatuck Environmental Foundation to allow students to raise and release quail chicks. Mills has offered Islip’s students

numerous exciting field trips, fostering a love of science, including a “A Day in the Life of the River” at Babylon’s Carlls River, “Fall into Nature” at Seatuck, a marine biology fishing trip in the Great South Bay, a “floating classroom” at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences in Southampton, and Molloy College’s Women

in Science Conference.

Mills will travel with her family to Washington D.C. in July to receive the EPA award. As part of winning the PIAEE, Mills will receive a plaque and $2,500 to further her professional development in environmental education, and the Islip School District will also receive $2,500 to fund environmental

educational activities and programs.

“AnnMarie takes teaching to the next level by applying realworld scenarios into daily lessons,” said Principal Timothy Martin. “Her students get to experience the environment right outside the classroom window which makes her lessons tangible, fun, and realistic for students.”
