O’Hara Signs With SUNY Cortland

Benefits Of Volunteering surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health.

Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

East Islip High School senior Kaila O’Hara signed a national letter of intent to join the swimming and diving team at SUNY Cortland this fall. She plans to major in mathematics and adolescent education.

A freestyle sprinter, O’Hara serves as swim captain for the Connetquot-East Islip girls varsity swimming and diving team, where she

was named MVP in 2019 and 2020-21. She earned All-League recognition in 2018, 2019 and 2020-21, achieved Scholar-Athlete and High Minds in Motion distinction, and was named to the 2017 All-County team. O’Hara was the top scorer for her team at the 2020-21 season Section XI county championships, placing fifth in 100-yard freestyle and seventh in

200-yard freestyle. She also is a member of East Islip’s varsity track and field team, competing as a pole vaulter and sprinter.

In academics, O’Hara earned a spot in the top 10% of her senior class and is a member of East Islip’s National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society.

Embracing the notion that one’s learning should never stop, Dr. Semel completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the areas of the arts, including her doctorate. With this focus, we are confident that she will continue to

seek out personal learning opportunities as she enters the next phase of her life.

We are thankful to have had Dr. Semel at the helm of our school district over the past few years and wish her all the best in the future.”

East Islip High School Class of 2021 graduate Brooke Rizzuto was recently named the recipient of this year’s Suffolk County School Superintendents Association Scholarship.

This scholarship is awarded annually to one graduating senior who is pursuing a degree in education or social services and maintained a

minimum weighted GPA of 85%. Rizzuto will attend Sacred Heart University this fall, pursuing a degree in chemistry education.

“Brooke’s kind, compassionate, empathetic, caring ways, combined with her roll-up-yoursleeves, let’s-get-the-jobdone work ethic, will make her an excellent teacher,”

said Superintendent John Dolan. “She has natural leadership and nurturing skills that will make her classroom a positive and energetic learning environment for our future students. Brooke will be part of the next great generation of teachers who pave the way for a bright future for our global community.”

Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic?

Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during

the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time.

Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

The Islip Board of Education honored admired and dedicated 2021 retirees, including Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ellen Semel, during a recent meeting. Also recognized at the board meeting were 20202021 SCOPE Award for Excellence for Support Staff Service winners Donna Bushelon and Michelle Hickey as well as the high school’s varsity teams that earned ScholarAthlete recognition.

Dr. Semel, Islip’s superintendent since 2018 and previously the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction and K-5 director of instruction, received many heartfelt tributes from Board President Philip Dineen as well as district administrators.

East Islip Student Makes A Big Splash In The County-Wide “Be Pool-Smart” Contest Legislator Tom Cilmi presented a proclamation to Anndrea Pumay, winner of this year’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest.

Anndrea is a third grade student from JFK Elementary School in East Islip. Having been selected by Legislator Cilmi as the 10th District winner, Anndrea’s poster was submitted and subsequently chosen by the Legislature’s Budget Review Office as the overall County-wide winner. More

than 200 entries were submitted to Legislator Cilmi’s office alone.

Due to COVID, the Legislature was not able to honor last year’s contestants so Legislator Cilmi also presented a certificate to Alyssa Toala, a second grade student from Connetquot Elementary School in Islip Terrace, whose poster placed second in the 2020 County-wide contest.

Legislator Cilmi said, “Anndrea is the third

County-wide winner from the 10th District in the last twelve years, all of whom came from the East Islip School District. That tells me two things: first, we have some really creative young people in East Islip; second, we have some very inspiring teachers.

My congratulations go to Anndrea and her teacher Mrs. Wilson, and my thanks goes to all those students and teachers who participated.”
