Race To Save The Sea Turtles!

2023 Paddle Battle LI Event

Saturday, July 29th

The New York Marine Rescue Center is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 2023 Paddle Battle LI Event on Saturday, July 29th along the Peconic River in Riverhead, NY. It’s a race to save the Sea Turtles! This family friendly event includes a 2.5-mile amateur race and a 5-mile competitive race course. First place medals will be offered to winners in each category, for each class and distance. We also have our Casual Paddle! This is not a race it’s just a great way for family and friends to get together and paddle casually on the beautiful Peconic River!

There is also a great opportunity for companies, organizations and unions to participate in the “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.” This 2.5 mile stand up paddle board and kayak race

designed for teams of four competitors to compete against one another for the Team Challenge trophy. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the bragging rights of winning the 2023 “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.”

All proceeds will go directly to the NY Marine Rescue Center, a not-forprofit 501c3 to help them save the Sea Turtles!

Registration starts at 7:30am on the Peconic Waterfront – Entry fees are $95/pp before the race day, or $105 on the event day. Rental canoes and kayaks are available for $40. About the New York Marine Rescue Center:

The New York Marine Rescue Center is a rescue and rehabilitation organization that promotes marine conservation. Our mission is to preserve and protect the marine environment through conservation efforts including rescue, rehabilitation, education and research. As a 501(c)3 non-profit, we are the primary responders for sick or injured seals, sea turtles, dolphins, porpoises and small toothed whales, and maintain the only marine mammal and sea turtle rehabilitation center in New York State.

Perseverance and pride were major themes at East Islip High School’s commencement on June 22, an outdoor ceremony that celebrated both the 96th and 46th graduating classes.

The 283 seniors in the Class of 2023 were clad in their red caps and gowns and marched in along the track to a live rendition of “Pomp and Circumstance” by the high school band. Seated on the field were more than 50 members of the Class of 1973, there to receive their 50-year certificates in an annual graduation tradition.

“We look forward to seeing you in 2073,” Principal Mark Bernard said to the current graduates.

In his address to the Class of 2023, Bernard noted that he recently came across the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh the Places You’ll Go.” He said that for such a whimsical story, it has many applicable life lessons such as perseverance, overcoming challenges and making good choices. These are qualities the graduates already possess, he added.

Valedictorian Antonio Cottone said the Class of 2023 is comprised of the most unique and talented individuals he has ever met, and everyone has something to offer. He reminded them to stay true to themselves as they venture into adulthood.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by seniors Gianna Urena and Paris Williamson and signed by students from

the Advanced ASL class. Tristan Hearth sang the National Anthem and Kaylee Norton, Keira Tantillo, Marisa Triolo, Kelly Waldron and Nina Walsh crooned East Islip’s alma mater, a song that dates back to 1941.

Class President Gabriella Maciora announced the Top 25 graduates and the colleges they will be attending next year. Bernard recognized students who earned the Seal of Biliteracy and the Seal of Civic Readiness, as well as four graduates who enlisted in the military.

Superintendent Paul Manzo admired the accomplishments of the class over their past 13 years, excelling in all areas. They have won athletic championships, been selected to honor societies, demonstrated their artistic talents and spearheaded numerous community service projects. During the challenges they faced in high school, particularly the pandemic that hit during their freshmen year, the graduates showed “EI Pride” to overcome and push through. They should keep that same spirit going forward.

“With dedication and drive, you will achieve anything you want to do,” Manzo said.

Retired Superintendent John Dolan recalled meeting this year’s graduates when they were students at John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools and

watched them grow into fine young men and women. He sent them into their world with a better understanding of EI Pride, noting that it represents traits such as energy, inclusion, passion, a relentless pursuit of goals, intelligence and insight, dogged determination, a strong work ethic and empathic hearts and minds.

“Don’t ever forget this is your home, this is where you shared,” Dolan said after leading graduates and the audience in chants of “EI Pride Forever.”

Board of education President Christopher Zachry said graduation represents more than a decade of hard work. As they work to pursue their goals, they will come across more no’s than yeses, but that doesn’t mean they should ever quit. Setbacks are opportunities to learn and grow, he explained.

“Don’t accept the no’s,” Zachry said, “but understand that they have a purpose.”

After receiving their diplomas, Maciora gave the farewell address as class president. She noted that children often use the phrase, “When I grow up” when talking about their futures.

“Well, graduates, we grew up,” she said, adding that while they recently experienced many lasts, they are heading off to the world to experience many firsts.

Viola Player Hailey Messina Wins LISFA Scholarship

Hailey Messina recently won the Long Island String Festival Association LISFA scholarship for a private study grant.

“It is incredible to have been awarded this scholarship,” said Messina, who recently graduated from East Islip Middle School and will be a freshman in East Islip High School this fall. “I look forward to being able to participate in future LISFA festivals throughout my school career and am truly honored to be this year’s eighth grade recipient.”

“Hailey is such a hardworking and dedicated member of the eighth grade orchestra and is thoroughly deserving of this grant to help her further pursue her passion,” teacher Katelyn Odierna said. “It has been a pleasure watching Hailey develop this passion for music.”

PSEG Long Island reminds customers to keep safety at the forefront as they use electricity to make the most of the season.

“Most of us love to be outside when the weather is warm and the days are long, and many of us utilize electricity to transform our outdoor spaces for the season,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution. “Whether you are using electric lawn equipment, hooking up a sound system for a garden party, or even inflating a bounce house or kids’ swimming pool, it’s important to follow best practices to ensure everyone stays safe.”

PSEG Long Island recommends customers:

· Check that extension cords are correctly rated for the amount of electricity they are to carry and are Underwriter Laboratory (UL) approved.

· Check all electric cords for visible damage. Cracked or frayed cords can be dangerous.

Never use power equipment on wet hedges, grass, shrubs, or in any areas that are damp.

Make sure their work and garden power tools are protected with three-pronged grounding plugs, unless they are double insulated.

Contact their town or village hall to confirm that their pool plans meet all local zoning and safety

requirements.

Check that no electric devices are so close to the swimming pool that they could accidentally fall into the water.

Ensure that all outdoor outlets have waterproof covers. Outlets that have moisture in them may create a shock hazard.

Keep all ladders far away from electric lines.

The fundraiser culminated in a communitybuilding Fun Run activity, in which students ran, walked, hopped and danced around the school’s track while a DJ

provided entertainment and encouragement. With each lap, faculty, staff and parent volunteers helped the children record how far they ran. Many of the participants ran over 30 laps. As a special reward for her spirited students, Principal Briana James held an entertaining “Pie the Principal” and “Dunk the Principal” event, enduring pies to the face and a bracing dip in a dunk tank. The money raised will be used for the National Circus Project, a program designed to provide fun

challenges that teach patience and self-discipline in a fun, supportive way, as well as to fund a new outdoor classroom for Sherwood. The latter project will include a flexible seating area, collaborative learning spaces, a musical space, and areas for exploration and creativity.

“In addition to fostering creativity, having this outdoor learning space will provide opportunities for our children to investigate and problem solve, which are valuable lifelong skills,” James said.

Islip High School Recognizes 25 Students Earning Seal Of Biliteracy

Islip High School recently recognized 25 remarkable students for earning the New York State Seal of Biliteracy

during a ceremony in the school’s cafeteria.

This prestigious honor is bestowed on high school

graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more

languages in addition to English. The Seal is affixed to each student’s diploma and high school transcript.

Seniors Nikita Cook, Jessica Hagihara and Brianna Henning earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Italian; Nicolas Cerna, Mia Crespo, Ahdalia Davies, Jhey Dizon, Rebecca Elie, Daiana Fuentes Velasquez, Estefany D. Gonzalez, Oscar Guerrero, Diego Guevara, Kayley Guzman Morales, Maria J. Jaramillo Placencio, Rachael Keyes, Jaleesa Marmol, Kathleen Ortiz Blandin, Juan Pantaleon, Simon Ramirez, Stella Reagan, Kacey Schassberger, Abigail Sosa Flores, Stephanie Vega and Brielle Zink earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish; and Emilio Shahib earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Italian with a pending Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish. Additionally, junior Jessica Villavicencio Alvarenga was recognized as a Seal candidate demonstrating proficiency in Spanish.

The ceremony, Islip’s sixth since initiating the Seal of Biliteracy program, was overseen by Seal of

Biliteracy advisers Sarah Ito, Karen Maisano, Claudia Osorio and Giuseppa Prainito, with speeches from Coordinator of World Language/ENL Rabia Hirji, Principal Lara Gonzalez and Superintendent Dr. Dennis P. O’Hara. The certificates were handed out by Dr. O’Hara and board of education President Philip Dineen.

“This is an incredible achievement,” Dr. O’Hara said. “Last year at this ceremony, we had 12 students earn the Seal of Biliteracy. This year we have 25. That says a lot about our teachers, our students and our families. To the students, I’d like to say that being bilingual or multilingual is a gift, but it’s not a gift that was given to you, it was a gift you earned, and you should be very proud of that. Make sure you continue to learn. Be sure to use this gift for the benefit of the people around you and the good of society.”
