Young Minds Grow During Exciting Library Activities
Second graders at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently worked in collaborative groups during library class to run a Dash robot. They had to problem-solve and use critical thinking skills to make Dash move through obstacles. The students also had a chance to change the appearance of
their Dash using a different app on the library iPads.
Meanwhile, Timber Point’s first graders began coding in library using the Code Studio App on their tablets. They learned how to drag and drop block coding, how to sequence code and what HTML code looks like.
Finally, kindergartners in
library class used Ozobots to sequence the Lucille Colandro story “There Was an Old Mermaid That Swallowed a Shark.” The students used problemsolving techniques to make their lines “just right” and “no mountains, only hills” so their Ozobot could retell the story from start to finish.

Michael Hansen Takes Over As East Islip Middle School Principal
Michael Hansen has been named the new principal of East Islip Middle School, effective July 1. He replaces the retiring Bill Brennen.
For the last year, Hansen served as the East Islip School District’s math and science director, and before that as an assistant principal at East Islip High School. Prior to coming
to East Islip, he spent 22 years in the Connetquot School District as a science teacher and then as dean of students.
A Rocky Point resident, Hansen earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island and master’s degree in education and administrative certification from Stony Brook
