Byron Lake Park Renovation Project

The Town of Islip is excited to finally be moving forward with this long overdue Park improvement. Artists On The Lane

65th Anniversary

South Bay Art Association is proud to be celebrating the 65th Anniversary of Artists on the Lane, one of the longest running art fairs in the country.

A 4th of July tradition in the heart of picturesque Bellport Village, artists travel from across the country to showcase their talents with art lovers and collectors. Award-winning fine artists and artisans line the iconic Bellport Lane each 4th of July with paintings, photography, ceramics and more.

Exhibitors donate works of art for a raffle benefitting our Student Scholarship Fund which will be awarded to students this November at the 28th Annual Nita Elder Student Scholarship Show at the Bellport Community Center. It is our hope that Artists on the Lane will continue to inspire future generations of artists for years to come.

2023 Sandcastle Contest To Be Held At Hither Hills State Park

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2023 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park. The contest will be held each Thursday beginning June 29 through August 31, 2023. Sand sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials native to the beach.

Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Trust, the program’s sponsor. Each week’s prizes will be awarded for the best sculptors and castles in several categories.

Registration is held each Thursday 9:30AM at Hither Hills State Park Visitors Center. A $10.00 Vehicle Use Fee will be in effect.

As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.

The non-profit organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.

“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacrifice so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

Giving Bark Thursday: Held on July 13, this is a 24-hour online event geared towards raising awareness and funds for America’s VetDogs. Throughout the day, anyone who makes a donation on their website (up to $30,000) will have their donation matched. Additionally, if you would like to create your own fundraiser, in hopes to raise funds on this special day, you can do so by clicking “Become a Giving Bark Fundraiser” at VetDogs.org/GivingBark.

America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk: You can also help America’s VetDogs make a di erence in the lives of veterans and first responders by participating in the 9th America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk, held on July 29 at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. This 5K is an In-Person and Virtual Event and dogs are welcome to join you on your run/walk too! Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or

a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.

Town To Enact Quality Of Life Court

Town of Islip residents will hopefully be able to resolve town code violations locally at Town Hall through the Town’s Quality of Life Court, rather than traveling to 5th District Court in Ronkonkoma. At Tuesday’s Town Board meeting, the Islip Town Board unanimously approved the first step, advertising for a public hearing to enact Local Law 4, establishing chapter 69 of the Islip

Town code, entitled “Bureau of Administrative Adjudication.”

“This will help us address many of the quality-of-life issues here in our Town, and resolve them quickly, conveniently and directly with our residents. Far too often, these matters get hung up in District Court, being postponed repeatedly, rather than being addressed and resolved. The objective is to answer any additional

questions residents may have, with the goal being compliance,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. The court will address civil violations such as violations for decks; pools; un-registered vehicles; litter and debris and building permits.

Proceedings are expected to occur twice a month, and will be handled by a rotation of four administrative law judges appointed. Representatives

from the Town’s various departments will be on hand to facilitate the process. Town of Islip’s court is anticipated to begin in 2025. This is something that is already being done in the towns of Huntington and Babylon. Public comment can be made during the hearing set for Tuesday, July 18th, 2023 at 2 pm at Islip Town Hall, or to the Islip Town Clerk via email at townclerk@islipny.gov.
