Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

www.VetDogs.org/Neighbor

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

If you would like to learn how to apply for a service dog or volunteer with the organization, please visit www.VetDogs. org/Neighbor or call 631.930.9090.

“After coming in second last year, James and I were determined to win this year,” Vetrano said. “We put countless hours of work and dedication into this project, and it really paid off. It was truly a one-of-akind experience to win such a prestigious competition. None of this would have been possible without the support from Mr. Lackner, my peers from WFTK and the East Islip wrestling community.”

Memorial Rocks Placed At Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Park In Islip

To mark Fentanyl Awareness Day (May 9) last month, parents who had lost children to the fentanyl and overdose epidemic painted memorial rocks with their children’s names and photos. These rocks were created to illustrate the number of people in the United States who die each day due to fentanyl poisoning and were displayed at a press conference with Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and Long Island Coalition on Alcohol and Drug Dependence on May 9 at the Suffolk County Legislature.

After being on display at the Suffolk County Legislature William H. Rogers Building for the past month, the rocks found a new permanent home at “Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Park”, a serene respite for reflection and inspiration located on the grounds of Seatuck National Wildlife Preserve, 550 South Bay Ave in Islip.

“We did this as an act of awareness and also a remembrance and tribute to our children,” said Lori Carbonaro of Selden, who lost her son Nicholas in 2014. “Our children are not just what they died of. They are more than that.”

“We thought that the rocks belong here under the Angel Tree of Remembrance in this park that is a place of healing and a place of contemplation,” said Paulette Phillipe of Mattituck, who created Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) after her grandson Gabriel died of a fentanyl overdose in 2010. “What better place for these rocks to be?” she added.

Suffolk County Radio Club Amateur Radio Field Day

“I believe that it will be a comfort to parents to visit the garden and see their child’s name and face on a rock,” said Carole Trottere, who lost her son Alex in 2018. “It may seem like a small thing, but I think it is a way of saying to the world, ‘I was here.’” Fentanyl and other opioids are fueling the worst drug crisis in the history of the United States. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, in the United States more than 1,500 people per week die from an overdose of some kind of opioid. What’s more, during 2020 and 2021, New York’s opioid death rate exceeded the national death rate and 2022 statistics promise to be no better.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) fentanyl is now the leading cause of death for people 18-45 years of age.

This week volunteers from The RMR Group in Mineola helped to manicure the park and plant some donated flowers. They were Mike O’Shaughnessy, The RMR Group, senior director of engineering; Terri Silverman, The RMR Group, assistant property manager; James Zeppa, The RMR Group, director; and Ray Reres.

On Saturday, June 24th the Suffolk County Radio Club will be hosting Amateur Radio Field Day. This is an annual event where amateur radio operators (hams) set up temporary stations and contact others around the country. The purpose of Field Day is to help train for an actual emergency where conventional means of communication have been damaged. Amateur

radio operators have the capability of contacting other hams around the world without the use of cellular phone networks or the internet. This resource has been invaluable in the recent past during earthquakes and severe weather events around the world. The public is invited to see amateur radio in action. Stations will be set up outdoors at 40 Grand Avenue, Shirley, NY (NE

corner of McGraw St.) and will be open to the public from 2PM until 5PM on Saturday the 26th.

Background: The Suffolk County Radio Club is Long Island’s oldest amateur radio club, founded in 1947. Each year, Field Day is visited by local dignitaries and groups such as the Scouts. More information is available at: suffolkcountyradioclub. com and at: arrl.org

Minuteman Scholarship Recipients Honored For Academic Excellence

Islip Town Supervisor

Angie Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board honored five students from the Town of Islip who received the U.S. Army’s Minuteman Scholarship. The Minuteman Scholarship Program is a Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship introduced in 2015 to enhance the Army Reserve’s ability to recruit highly qualified cadets every year.

The five high school seniors who received the scholarships for their

academic success and service to the ROTC include Valery Rodriguez, Jocelyn Velasquez, Diana Saltos from Brentwood and twins Christopher and Courtney Skahill from West Islip.

“Valery, Jocelyn, Diana, Christopher and Courtney proved themselves to be fantastic candidates for the Minuteman Scholarship. Their participation in the ROTC program at their high schools exemplifies their dedication for our nation and scholarly excellence… we look forward to the bright

future ahead of each of you,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

“This is the highest amount ever given in a single year to one Township,” said Steve Castleton, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, whose team selects the scholarship recipients.

The scholarship provides full tuition and fees or room and board ($10,000 per year), for up to four years at a public or private college. Scholarship recipients also receive a monthly stipend and a yearly book allowance.

Six cadet Peace Officers were recently sworn-in to the Town of Islip’s 14-week New York State certified Law Enforcement Academy program, led by the Town’s NYS certified instructors. The robust Academy has been built from the ground up, to better prepare recruits and current officers for service here in our Town and beyond, by providing classroom instruction in law, ethics, communication, daily defensive tactics, as well as de-escalation, Narcan, CPR and First Aid training.

“We are so proud of our dedicated and knowledgeable instructors for the invaluable training they provide, and look forward to welcoming the cadets and officers who complete their training and emerge better equipped to serve the public,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

In addition to training Town of Islip Park Rangers, Harbormasters, Fire Marshalls and Long Island MacArthur Airport Security Officers, the Islip program also provides NYS

Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) to area peace and police officers, and is a recommended program to outside law enforcement agencies by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

“We have watched with pride as our Academy has grown to become one of the ‘go to’ training facilities in the area, and remain committed to providing best-in-class training to keep our communities safe,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

PSEG Foundation To Grant $1 Million To Local Organizations

The PSEG Foundation announced the 2023 request for proposals for the annual Neighborhood Partners Program, with grants available ranging from $500 to $15,000. Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations in New Jersey and Long Island, New York are encouraged to apply. Applications will be evaluated and grants awarded based on demonstrated program effectiveness, depth, breadth and overall alignment with the PSEG Foundation strategic pillars, which are environmental sustainability, social justice and equity and economic empowerment.

“We’re pleased to make $1

million in grant funding available through our very popular Neighborhood Partners Program, where we see local heroes making a difference in the lives of others throughout PSEG’s service territories,” said Calvin Ledford Jr., PSEG Foundation president. “We seek to partner with people who have a track record of success and who present viable plans for addressing today’s largest challenges including those of sustainability, equity, social justice and economic empowerment.”

Last year the PSEG Foundation awarded more than 300 Neighborhood Partners Program grants. For example, America’s

Grow-a-Row received funding for its fresh produce initiative. This program provides nutritious produce to regional hunger relief agencies and at local free farmers markets in communities that lack reliable access to affordable fresh produce. In Long Island, Habitat for Humanity used its grant for the Reuse, Reduce, Repurpose Program to help divert more than 3 million pounds of waste from local landfills that were repurposed and sold at a fraction of the cost to benefit its clients, families and the local community.

“PSEG is the perfect example of corporate social responsibility in action. Their commitment to feeding those faced with hunger

and food insecurity runs deep throughout their organization. From the countless hours PSEG employees have invested by volunteering in the fields, to helping underwrite a portion of our farming expenses,” said Chip Paillex, president and founder, America’s Grow-a-Row. “We could not be more grateful for PSEG and the PSEG Foundation’s support that allowed us to positively impact approximately 100,000 people in need last year.”

“In nearly 10 years since the inception of the program, the PSEG Foundation has made great strides with affecting change in the communities it serves,” said Maria Spina, manager, PSEG

Foundation. “Through the Neighborhood Partners Program, the PSEG Foundation aims to partner with organizations that are transformative, leading change on issues impacting our communities and working toward collaborative solutions.”

To apply by the June 30, 2023 deadline, please visit our application website. Award announcements are scheduled for mid-September 2023. For more information about the program, visit https://pseg.com/ neighborhoodpartnersprogram. For questions about the program, please contact CorporateCitizenship@pseg. com.

Islip EXCEL Students Learn Wilderness Survival Skills

Islip Middle School students in the EXCEL program recently participated in a two-part wilderness survival course taught by John Scott, a

forest ranger from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. In the first session, the students learned about the job of a

forest ranger before delving into survival skills such as how to use a compass, make a splint, improvise a stretcher and retrace their footsteps, as well as

the value of resilience, team communication and maintaining morale. They had the chance to test out their new skills in the second session with mock

training exercises.

“My idea for this course is teaching the students wilderness survival to help them in case they are with

somebody who gets hurt while they’re camping, so they can get out to the road and get some help,” Scott said.
