The recently revived Charles Pulaski Environment Scholarship is available through Keep Islip Clean, and is presented to graduating high school
seniors attending school within the Town of Islip who will be pursuing studies in environmental science or a related discipline, or, who have demonstrated a sensitivity to the environment through leadership/participation in pro-environmental programs such as recycling, land conservancy, environmental cleanup projects, etc.

Serendipity: A Special Creative Forum For Breast Cancer Patients, Survivors And Caregivers On July 11
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a free guided art adventure for breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers to light their creative sparks by making art through a variety of different techniques and mediums. The inperson workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 11 from 10 am to 11:30 am at Adelphi University in Garden City (room details will be provided upon registration).

Coordinator, for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, who will be offering a variety of different techniques and mediums during this forum.
Co-facilitating is social worker Angela M. Papalia, LMSW, Assistant Director, Adelphi Breast Cancer Program who says that learning and practicing different breathing exercises will be part of the session. “These exercises will teach you how to disengage from distracting thoughts and sensations,” she says.
Breathing exercises have many health benefits such as improving immunity, calming down anxiety, increasing
sleep quality, improving cardiovascular health, aiding in concentration, reducing inflammation, strengthening lungs and more.
The Junior Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, the Marilyn Lichtman Foundation and Northwell Health Cancer Institute are co-sponsors. Registration is required to attend this free forum and space is limited to 40 participants. Art supplies will be provided for all exercises.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and successfully reduced the waiting time to receive a service dog from 2-3 years to 9-12 months!
The journey their service dogs go on is quite fascinating and in-depth. These dogs undergo specific training to make sure they can help others to the best of their ability.
America’s VetDogs works primarily with Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or a mix of the two breeds. They breed the dogs themselves to ensure the canines have the lineage, intelligence and temperament to excel in helping others. Each newborn pup then resides in their Puppy Nursery for about 8 weeks until the future service dog is placed in its innovative Prison Puppy Program.
Through this special program, America’s VetDogs has partnered with more than a dozen correctional facilities along the East Coast. Carefully selected incarcerated individuals are paired with a puppy and, with support from America’s VetDogs’ expert advisors, teach the puppy good house manners, basic obedience and rudimentary service dog tasks. In many facilities, incarcerated veterans are participating in the program.
On the weekends, the puppies reside with Weekend Puppy Raisers, which typically live within 30 miles of a correctional facility. These volunteers teach house
manners and socialization skills, while also attending group obedience classes.
Puppy Raisers provide loving homes and care for each furry friend until they’re old enough to move onto the next step.
After about 14 to 16 months, the puppies return to America’s VetDogs’ Smithtown location for formal service dog training. Each get assigned to a Certified Service Dog Instructor, who will work with the dog for the next 3-4 months, teaching advanced tasks and customizing its training to match the needs of its future handler. A dog can be trained to pick up dropped items, open doors, press pushplates on power-assisted doors, perform nightmare interruption, provide balance and stability and more.
When a dog is deemed “class-ready,” the chosen handler is invited to a 2 week on-campus class in America’s VetDogs’ newly renovated student residence to complete the training, where they will learn how to work with the dog to become a new team for independence.

A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a life-affirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10, from 7 pm to 8 pm. The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by Dee MacDonald, a funny romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree it’s about time they
had a holiday to remember… and they do as they set forth in Europe in a used recreational vehicle.
The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild of Adelphi Hotline Volunteer Lynne Borah from Plainview. Borah, a 20-year breast cancer survivor, says “Reading is my favorite getaway,” which is why she decided to start the book club to help others escape from any difficulties they are having. LEGO Girls Finish Impressive Rookie Season At FLL Invitational
East Islip’s LEGO Girls robotics team finished their impressive season by competing at the FIRST Lego League Challenge Invitational at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. This American Robotics Open Championship event showcases top robotics teams from across the United States competing by displaying their core
values while achieving excellence and innovation in robot performance, robot design and an innovation project.
The LEGO Girls, a rookie team of fourthgrade John F. Kennedy Elementary School, students Jayne Elliott, Sonali Kamath and Antonia Rezza, wowed the judges with their project and robot
presentations. The East Islip trio advanced to the Invitationals after finishing in the top five of 100 FLL Long Island Challenge teams this season in the 9-14 age bracket. Their season accomplishments include first place Robot Performance Award and Core Values Award wins at the Long Island qualifiers; a first place Engineering
Excellence Award, Zebra Award (a special recognition from FLL referees) and invitation to the LSC Invitational Nationals at the Long Island Championships; and a team event trophy at the LSC Invitational.
