Foods You Eat Could Affect Whether Or Not You Can Donate

The foods a person eats before attempting to donate blood could affect whether or not he or she is allowed to donate. According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is

a protein in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will

be asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal. So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people maintain their strength and energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new blood

cells to replace the ones that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.

The Doxsee Legacy: Growing Up In A Fishing Family

On Tues, June 25th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet and the Islip Public Library will co-host a program on the Doxsee Family. James Harvey Doxsee was a prominent Islip resident during the second half of the 19th century and a pioneer in the field of canning clams that were dug by the baymen of the Great South Bay. His clam products were distributed nationwide. Harvey’s great grandson, Bob, followed in the family’s seafood business. Bob’s PowerPoint presentation is a combination of pictures and anecdotes which highlights his family from the 1800’s

East Islip HS Receives Record Number Of Teeny Awards Nominations

East Islip High School’s students and theatrical directors were thrilled to receive a record number of Teeny Awards nominations this year for their two fullscale productions of “Game of Tiaras” (presented in

November 2023) and “Mean Girls: High School Version” (presented in March 2024).

The Islip Arts Council introduced the tradition of the Teeny Awards over 15 years ago, to publicly recognize the hardworking

and talented theater students in high schools across the Town of Islip. The Teeny Awards are modeled after the Broadway Tony Awards, recognizing students in the categories of Lead Actor/ Actress, Supporting Actor/

Special Recognition Awards are also given to students involved in the stage crew and pit orchestra, and every director is given the opportunity to recognize a special student from each production for the Director’s Choice Award. A panel of judges attends each local high school production and evaluates the actors’ performances based on a rubric, and a Teeny Awards Gala complete with red carpet and TV crew is held. This year’s Gala will be on June 9 at William Floyd High School.

Sixteen Seniors From East Islip Sign For College Athletics

Sixteen East Islip High School seniors recently signed national letters of intent to continue their sports careers at the college level. The students were recognized at a May 14 ceremony hosted by Athletic Director Stephen Restivo in the school’s forum, with their proud families in attendance.

East Islip High School honored its 10 highest ranking academic seniors of the Class of 2024 with a breakfast celebration with Superintendent Paul Manzo, Principal Mark Bernard, school administrators and counselors in the school’s Forum on May 31. The valedictorian and salutatorian were given their sashes for graduation, and

the remaining students their top 10 tassels. Those recognized as the top 10 members of the Class of 2024 are valedictorian Kathryn O’Hara, who will attend Tufts University (majoring in engineering); salutatorian Kevin Huang, who will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (majoring in computer science); Logan

Legislator Donnelly And County Office For The Aging Announce Islip Spring Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Islip residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and

information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

In the coming months, Senior Advocates will be visiting the following locations in the Town of Islip:
