Options For Community Living, Inc Receives $150,000 Housing For Everyone Grant

Options for Community Living, Inc., a nonprofit organization providing residential programs and support services for vulnerable people on Long Island, has been awarded a $150,000 Housing for Everyone grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®. Options is one of 37 non-profit organizations selected from more than 450 applicants to receive a Housing for Everyone grant as part of the TD Charitable Foundation’s signature grant initiative that has helped support organizations that are focused on providing affordable housing and affordable housing services since 2005.

In recent years the housing affordability crisis has continued to be a financial burden on families. As individuals and families across the country struggle with inflation and an exponential rise in rental costs, affordable housing providers face increased hardship given the growing demand for affordable rental units and emergency rental assistance.

The grant will support property maintenance, repairs, and renovations to multiple affordable supportive housing units many of which have been in service for over 20 years.

“Options serves more than 2,000 Long Islanders

each year,” said CEO, Yolanda Robano-Gross.

“With an affordable rent and services, our supportive housing programs help formerly homeless, disabled individuals and families live with dignity in the community.”

Robano-Gross continued, “This generous grant award is vitally important for our program. We see firsthand the impact that stable affordable housing has on an entire family. People take care of their health. Some return to work or school improving their economic situation. Children perform better in school and have more opportunities, often ending the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Thank you, TD Bank for responding to this significant community need.”

Through the 17th annual Housing for Everyone grant competition, the TD Charitable Foundation

awarded $7 million across the Bank’s Maine-toFlorida footprint and Michigan to help support affordable housing organizations who focus on preserving affordable rental housing in their work to deliver rental assistance, rehabilitate affordable rental housing properties, and build organizational capacity to address resident sustainability for the longterm. Since 2005, the TD Charitable Foundation has given more than $49 million dollars to nonprofit and charitable organizations through the Housing for Everyone grant competition and helped support more than 550 affordable housing projects and initiatives.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a free shop for Long Island children in need, is requesting donations of girls’ clothing, sizes 2 to 5. This outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City, assists more than 2500

children and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. “As we’ve set up our winter store, we are finding a gap in our

supply of clothing for little girls,” says Ethical Friends of Children Director Jim LoPresti of Massapequa Park.

Ethical Friends of Children, established in 1985, is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals, families, or

community groups donate gently used clothing and other things children may require, such as backpacks. Any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula.

“Customers” are referred by many of the area’s social

service organizations and are supported by both religiously affiliated and private agencies funded by Nassau and Suffolk Counties

Volunteers are always welcome to help sort, organize and deliver clothing and goods.

National Junior Honor Society Shows Support For Ride For Life

The ALS Ride for Life visited East Islip Middle School on May 10, met by cheering students with banners showing support. At this annual event, ALS patients ride power wheelchairs on local roads and highways to raise awareness and funding for research in finding a cure for ALS. The school’s National Junior Honor

Society had held a Ride for Life fundraiser from March through April, raising a total of $1,850. NJHS members sold raffle tickets inside and outside school, and also collected donations online by teachers, staff members, parents and fellow community members.

I Trust You

I received a voicemail from someone this week who is thinking about selling her house. She’s lived in her home for many years and is a little nervous about the thought of leaving it. At the end of her message, she said something that made my day, and prompted me to write this article; she said, “Please give me a call back. I trust you.” Hearing those three magical words puts this homeowner immediately into my “Friends and Family” book. I never want to lose someone’s trust in me. It is the highest compliment I can receive from someone else, professionally, or personally. Trust is often the difference between winning and losing in business. It takes time to build, but it can be lost in an instant.

There are five simple ways to build trust every day:

1) Be open and honest. If you are, people will be more likely to trust you.

2) Follow through on your promises. If you say you will do something, make sure you do it.

3) Listen. When you listen, others will feel like they’ve been heard and understood.

4) Be respectful. If you respect people, they are more likely to trust you.

5) Be consistent. When you are consistent, people will know what to expect from you, and they will be more likely to trust you. As hard as it is to build trust, I have seen people lose it in a second. The easiest and quickest ways to break someone’s trust in you are lying, break your promise, ignore someone, be disrespectful, and be inconsistent. Once you lose trust, it’s almost impossible to get it back. Regardless of the type of business you are in or the role you play in the company, the path to your success will be paved, repeatedly, by three simple words: I Trust You.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-proﬁt organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and ﬁrst responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year, America’s VetDogs is celebrating their 20th anniversary!

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized not only the growing need for specialized service dogs that could help wounded service-members, but also that aging veterans could also benefit from a specially trained service dog. America’s VetDogs was then founded as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation and later became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. In 2015, first responders with work-related disabilities were added to the individuals served.

Today, the organization supports those they serve with an uncompromised commitment to excellence, from highly empathetic and certiﬁed trainers to meticulously constructed curriculum delivered during a two-week, inresidence training program, followed by a lifetime of aftercare support. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but services are always provided free to the individuals served.

The dogs they train are taught specialized tasks and skills such as retrieval of dropped items, positional cues to extend their handler’s personal space when in a crowded setting, counterbalance, nightmare interruption, pressing buttons
