Art Students Create Moving Portraits For Memory Project

Seventeen students from East Islip High School’s National Art Honor Society participated in the Memory Project this year, creating moving portraits of children from Venezuela using different media of their choice, based on provided photographs.

Since 2004, the Memory Project has been dedicated to promoting intercultural awareness, friendship, and kindness

between children around the world through the universal language of art.

“I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to create a portrait for a child in Venezuela,” said senior Jenna Moceri, the NAHS treasurer. “I hope he loves the portrait I made for him.”

“I think the Memory Project is a really special service project for the NAHS, as our students have to opportunity to

share their talents with young children across the globe, and bring smiles to their faces,” said NAHS co-adviser Dan Figliozzi.

“Even through these difficult times, we managed to get some wonderful portraits to send to the children in Venezuela,” said NAHS co-adviser Heather Toomey. “This is our second year participating in this fantastic project and I hope we continue every year.”

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, nonprofits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is well-rounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, however her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity.

She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products.

During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for.

Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!”

Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need.

One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need.

We all want our homes to be safe, comforting spaces that offer refuge and protection from the outside world. The global pandemic has taught us this, as well as the importance of preparation – not just for illness — but also for natural

disasters like fires, floods, earthquakes, and tornados.

Making sure your house is a secure and resilient structure is critical no matter where you live, as global warming has altered the climates and weather events of many

regions. Fortunately, thanks to advances in design and innovative materials, building a stronger, disaster-proof home is possible.

An alternative to traditional wood-framing, Nudura insulated concrete forms are an excellent option many engineers and designers are turning to. The steelreinforced solid concrete cores range from four to 12 inches, providing far superior strength and safety compared to wood. Meanwhile the nontoxic, fire-retardant expanded polystyrene foam provides a fire protection rating of up to four hours.

Home Garden A Guide To Buying And Setting Up A Bird Bath Warm weather means more opportunities to spend time outdoors while at home. Whether your favorite form of outdoor recreation includes sitting on the patio reading or digging in the garden, there’s a good chance that you will be sharing the space with local wildlife. Optimizing opportunities to view and interact with backyard wildlife can make the great outdoors even more enjoyable.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology indicates that there are around 2,059 bird species on the continent of North America.

Red-winged blackbirds, yellowrumped warblers, American robins, and chipping sparrows are among the most commonly seen birds in North America.

Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Installing a bird bath can be a step in the right direction.

Bird baths can make yards more attractive to birds. Birds

require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds.

Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion.

Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths.

It is important to keep the water in a bird bath shallow (around two inches of water or less). This enables birds to splash

around safely and wade in.

Birds do not want to slide around, so a material that is coated and slippery, like glazed ceramic or glass, may not be too popular. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing.

Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris.

Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests.
