Melissa Parrott, the director of education and outreach for the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission, paid a visit to Islip Middle School in early March, speaking to fascinated students as part of the EXCEL program’s ongoing “Inventing Self” series of inspirational talks.

In her wide-ranging career, Parrott has also worked as an ABC natural history documentary producer; a naturalist at El Dorado Nature

Center in Long Beach, California; outreach coordinator for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County; director of education of Sweetbrier Nature Center in Smithtown; director of environmental education for Massachusetts’ Executive Office of Environmental Affairs; and an environmental educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension.

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals.

We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans.

Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation.

Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times.

They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses.

“The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization.

“I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.”

Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring.

Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans.

They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk

to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.”

A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times.

Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed.

They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there.

They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags.

Students Recognized By Islip Town Board Two Connetquot High School students were recently recognized by the Islip Town Board for their many achievements and service to the school community.

Junior Julianna Levanti received the Student Achievement Award for outstanding achievement in leadership. Levanti was recognized for her many leadership roles including treasurer for the CHS school store, treasurer for DECA,

student representative for the Connetquot Business Advisory Council, presenting Junior Achievement lessons to fifth grade students as a member of the National Business Honor Society and for her academic excellence in her business courses.

Senior Alex Yeung received the Student Achievement Award for outstanding achievement in social studies. Yeung was recognized for his

academic achievement in his social studies courses during the last four years and his leadership of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society this past year.

Girls On The Run Long Island To Hold Its First Virtual 5k In June Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations.

With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the run at www.gotrlongisland. org/5k, participants will

receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered, on June 20.

Leading up to the run, GOTR Long Island will share information about the run and fun activities on its social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @gotrlongisland. This will include training for walking or running the 5K, indoor alternatives, and safety tips along with fun activities usually seen at a GOTR 5K. The traditional Happy Hair, kid-friendly

hair coloring, and Bling Your Bib activities will be included. A schedule of events will be released at a later date for the June 20 run and will be shared on social media.

GIRLS ON THE RUN LONG ISLAND CONTINUES SUPPORT FOR GIRLS DURING COVID-19 As we are adjusting to a new way of life for the time being, Girls on the Run continues to provide inspiration, support and joy to our communities and girls during this challenging time.

In addition to transitioning to a Virtual 5K event, we have

mobilized other strategies to drive our mission of inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident: GOTR at Home provides fun and interactive lessons that girls and families can do at home, designed specifically for girls in mind! These lessons aim to provide girls of all abilities with an opportunity to learn and grow, just as they would have at their scheduled practices.

Healthcare Heroes at Good Samaritan Hospital Get Energized with Meals Provided by PSEG Long Island Over the past few weeks, PSEG Long Island has been helping to energize our healthcare heroes by providing catered meals, snacks and sports drinks to local hospitals, nursing homes and healthcare facilities on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, including to the ER staff at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.

During National Nurses Week (May 6-12) and throughout the month of April, dinners, lunches and breakfasts, along with uplifting thank you notes from PSEG Long Island employees, have been sent to daytime and overnight staff caring for COVID-19 patients across Long Island. To date, more than 300 meals have been provided at a dozen facilities from the Hamptons to the Queens County line.

The healthcare workers are most appreciative and send their return thanks with photos of them with the meals. The initiative will provide several hundred meals at more than 30 health facilities across Long Island and the Rockaways to bring cheer and sustenance to

Understanding these ratings helps people identify how the respirator performs (how

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips During Lockdown As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed.

“The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips.
