MEMORY OF ISLIP’S FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS HONORED - The Town of Islip paid tribute to the memory of its fallen hometown heroes, FDNY Jesse Gerhard and FDNY William Moon, with a cupola lighting ceremony on Thursday, May 4th. Together at the steps of Islip Town Hall, stood the Gerhard and Moon families, joined by members of the Islip Fire Department; Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter; Councilmen Jorge Guadrón and John M. Lorenzo, in solemn tribute to the memory and legacy of these fallen heroes.

Memory Of Islip’s Fallen Firefighters Honored With Cupola Lighting

The Town of Islip paid tribute to the memory of its fallen hometown heroes, FDNY Jesse Gerhard and FDNY William Moon, with a cupola lighting ceremony on Thursday, May 4th. The event marks the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s, “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters,” which invites fire and community organizations, businesses, landmarks and homes to light up red on May 4, International Firefighters Day, through May 7, National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, and honors the sacrifice of America’s fallen fire heroes.

Jesse Gerhard was a 12year veteran of the Islip Fire Department and a member of the FDNY. On February 15th, 2022, Jesse answered his final call, suddenly passing away while on duty at Ladder 134 just days after battling a 2nd alarm fire.

Together at the steps of Islip Town Hall, stood the Gerhard and Moon families, joined by members of the Islip Fire Department; Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter; Councilmen Jorge Guadrón and John M. Lorenzo, in solemn tribute to the memory and legacy of these fallen heroes.

“The loss of Jesse at just 33 years-old shook the Islip community, but we take comfort in knowing Jesse followed his heart, and fulfilled his childhood dream of joining the FDNY in his greatgrandfather’s footsteps. Jesse’s commitment to making the world a better place drove him forward, and he died in service of that cause. For this we remember his legacy,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

William “Billy” Moon, was a loving father and devoted husband. Billy joined the FDNY in 2002 and served for 20 years with

the utmost dedication and skill, serving Ladder 133 in Queens, culminating in his transfer to the prestigious Rescue 2 in Brooklyn. Billy also served in Islip, as a devoted volunteer with the Islip Fire Department, serving as Chief in 2017.

“Billy’s career and impact as a firefighter for

over two decades of service truly defined his legacy as a hero. After his death, that legacy lives on. Billy’s donated organs have saved the lives of five people. Among those, are two New York City Fire Fighters, ensuring that his memory will not be forgotten,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

“We continue to grieve the loss of Billy and Jesse: these two incredible men, and beloved firefighters who served our community with courage and valor. And our hearts and thoughts remain with their families, friends, and colleagues, many of whom are here with us today,” she

concluded.

Volunteer Breakfast Celebrates Seniors

VOLUNTEER BREAKFAST CELEBRATES SENIORS - Each year, the Town of Islip Volunteer Breakfast pays tribute to all those senior volunteers who are kind enough to help out at their local senior centers. “These volunteers make valuable contributions to the success of the day-to-day schedules at our many Town of Islip Senior Centers,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Whether serving meals, calling BINGO, welcoming newcomers or assisting with parties, their contributions are essential, and this event is our way of saying ‘thank you,’” said the Supervisor. Supervisor Carpenter presented each volunteer with a Town of Islip Certificate acknowledging their volunteerism. The event was held at beautiful Brookwood Hall in East Islip.

Helen Martin & Trade Winds Scholarships For Achievement 2023

At least two $1,000.00 Scholarships will be awarded to students who have had personal experience with homelessness. Students must be a current resident of Nassau or Suffolk County (unless already enrolled in college or trade school elsewhere, with a previous residence in Nassau or Suffolk Counties), and have attended elementary, middle and/or high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.

Applicants must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study or other licensed vocational program no later than the fall session of 2024.

Complete packages must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15 and must include each of the following:

-Student Application

-Letter(s) of Recommendation

-Essay

-School Transcript; documentation of GED Completion (if applicable)

Incomplete and late packages will not be considered.

GOLD MEDALISTS - The Hofstra University Dance Team headed to Florida last month to represent the United States at the International Cheer Union World Championship. With over 50 countries represented, all 23 dancers on the team wore their uniform with pride and happily left as Premier Pom ICU Gold Medalists! Hofstra’s dance program currently has ten national titles, and now two world titles.

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.

Since 2004, their organization has Inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are now recognized in their new Stony Brook location. In addition to their large exhibition area, theater and o cial “Hall of Fame Museum”, the 8,800 square foot building is home to a beautiful performance area. They’re open Wednesdays-Sundays from 12 noon through 5pm. Admission prices are: Adult $19.50, Seniors (65+) and Veterans $17.00, Students (w/ID) $15.00. Children under 12 are free. Tickets and now gift cards can be purchased online and at the door.

The program, in which 150 East Islip High School students are enrolled, helps students build resiliency, leadership skills and social-emotional learning, assisting them in working through real-life issues and equipping them with the critical skills necessary to navigate life challenges. LaLota Announces Hundreds Of Defense Jobs Coming To Suffolk County

Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01) announced that hundreds of new jobs would be coming to Suffolk County after Raytheon Technologies Corporation was awarded a contract by the federal government totaling $113,628,201. The contract will cover costs for Raytheon to develop MK 15 closein weapon system (CIWS) upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and

associated hardware. One of the manufacturing facilities Raytheon will use for this contract is located in Hauppauge, N.Y.

“I am thrilled that hundreds of high-paying defense manufacturing jobs will be coming to Suffolk County. As the son of a former Grumman Secretary and a Navy Veteran, I understand how important the defense industrial base

is to local families and Long Island’s economy,” said LaLota. “Now, as a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the strategic role Long Island’s defense manufacturing base plays in ensuring America’s military can deter the next conflict, or if needed, win it. Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in

support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers

for the program. The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the five-year life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need for skilled workers,

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,”
