Pedestrian Presentation Suffolk County Department of Health educator Robin Spencer recently offered pedestrian safety lessons to students in grades K-2 at Islip’s Wing Elementary School.

The visit was a result of a New York State Highway Safety grant awarded to Wing by the department.

Spencer spoke with

students in each Wing classroom, touching on topics such as crossing at the corner, wearing light colors at night and what to do when there is no sidewalk.

“These lessons gave the students an opportunity to have direct instruction about pedestrian safety and the potential hazards near

“We encourage the children to play outside, so we need them to be conscious of their surroundings and how to navigate the area around them. The lessons increased their awareness of the world around them.”

There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing.

The customer is always right, indeed.

Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service.

On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check.

Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused.

Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession.

Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return.

And waited…. And waited…

Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed.

We were, we determined, completely invisible.

Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned.

Dessert? We looked at each other.

We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours.

Cheers, indeed.

One Step at a Time” was held on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the Garden City Hotel. The annual LICADD event raised over $350,000 to support LICADD’s substance abuse counseling and educational programs serving Long Islanders in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICADD was honored to host a record breaking number of guests and sponsors who

graciously believe in vital importance of the LICADD mission.

More than 350 donors, community members, elected officials, treatment providers and their family members turned out to support LICADD and ensure that the agency’s life-saving addiction resources and recovery programs remain available to individuals and families across Long Island.

LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman stated, “LICADD is grateful for all of our generous donors and sponsors who support LICADD’s substance abuse prevention programs.

Sixty-two years ago R. Brinkley Smithers had a vision that all persons who suffer with addiction would have access to treatment.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.

Every day, they have a different school

drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping.

Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased).

Girls on the Run ~ Long Island

www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls.

All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. Third-graders at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School recently took visiting friends and family members on a journey through time, transforming the school into a wax museum. Each student researched the

life of a chosen historical figure and recited information in the role of their figure, demonstrating the knowledge they had gained.

“The students amazed me with the research they collected and the speeches

they created,” said Principal Hillary Bromberg. “Some of the students really remained true to character and stayed ‘frozen’ until someone walked by and pushed the button.”

Gelato and a Show East Islip High School’s Italian-language students recently enjoyed a threepart field trip celebrating the language and culture of Italy, beginning with a visit to Caffe Italia in Deer Park to taste fresh gelato.

The students tasted a wide variety of gelato flavors as well as biscotti, pastries and cappuccino.

“It was like we were in Italy,” said Emily Gerde,

one of several language teachers accompanying the students. “It is the most delicious and fresh gelato you will taste on Long Island.”

The next stop was the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Queens, where the students took in an interactive performance

by Incanto Productions, sponsored by the Italian American Committee on

Education. The interactive show, “I Sette Mondi,” incorporated dancing, trapeze artists, and spoken and sung Italian, with audience participation geared toward different levels of language learners.

Office Chaplain Named On Thursday, April 26th, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. hosted a ceremony at the Yaphank Correctional Facility to officiate the Sheriff’s Office first group of uniformed Chaplains in its more than 330 year history of continuous service to the county’s residents.

All Kids Fair Fun

The 8th annual All Kids Fair had record attendance on Sunday at the Hilton Long Island/Huntington.

Every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year was no different.

Over 3000 people, representing 1000 families, enjoyed a bounce house, petting zoo, and many kidcentered classes.

Children enjoyed a large number of additional activities and “freebies,” including face painting, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, water ice samples, a video game trailer, and an 8 1/2 foot snake and other animals to touch.

The fun-filled All Kids Fair continues its yearly tradition of entertaining kids and their families with captivating and educational activities. A new addition

to the Sunday, April 29th, event was The Butterfly Experience.

Children and adults were able to watch the beautiful, multicolored butterflies flying around in a huge tent, or, for a small fee, were able to enter the tent with a feeding stick and have the butterflies come to them.

Team to Debut New Flight Demo The GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team returns for their 15thappearance at their hometown air show at Jones Beach.

The team has prepared a new demonstration that will be performed during Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beachon May 26th27th. The 15thannual event will be hosted at Jones Beach State Park, which is one of the largest events for the NY State Parks Department. The homecoming show will be the sixth stop for the 2018 air show season for the squadron of World War IIera aircraft.

The GEICO Skytypers fly six SNJs powered by 600-horsepower Pratt and Whitney engines. As WWII training aircraft, the SNJs were designed to perform all the maneuvers of fighter planes from the same era, but at slower speeds.

“The SNJs flown by our team were originally used as training aircraft for WWII pilots,” says Long Island resident and Team Flight Lead Larry Arken.

“We consider it an honor to demonstrate the amazing abilities of these vintage warbirds on behalf of our sponsor, GEICO, while sharing some rarely seen aviation history with air show crowds. Now more than 75 years old, the SNJ2 is a testament to the engineering genius of the Greatest Generation. These

aircraft are a dream to fly.”

A majority of the team’s low-level flying demonstration takes place in front of the crowd. The historic roar of the vintage engines fills the air as the team demonstrates more than 20 different periodspecific tactical maneuvers during its 18-minute performance.

“We are excited to reveal a new routine to our supporters for the 2018 Air Show Season,” said Lead Solo Pilot Steve Salmirs, who choreographed the Skytypers’ new demonstration for the 2018 season. “There is more dynamic maneuvering from the various aircraft, additional interaction between the planes in the air show air space, and some surprise elements developed to enhance and highlight the aircraft and pilots’ capabilities. Our narration will continue to educate audiences as the team demonstrates military maneuvers taught and executed from WWII to present day. We look forward to seeing old friends and making new acquaintances at air shows to hear comments about the new routine. We hope everyone will be pleased,” Salmirs added.

The GEICO-sponsored team is known as the “Skytypers” because of its unique capability of creating giant messages

in the sky when not performing in air shows.

Flying five aircraft in a tight, line-abreast formation, the planes coordinate in typing dot matrix-style messages with environmentally friendly puffs of white smoke.

A computer in the lead aircraft uses a customprogrammed tablet to send commands to the other planes via radio signals.

The result is astonishing individual letters as tall as the Empire State Building generating messages that can be seen from 15 miles away in any direction with 20-25 characters typed in less than two minutes.

Flying demonstrations will begin at 10:00 a.m on Saturday and Sunday.

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels and Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will coheadline the air show that includes military and world-class civilian acts such as: the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, Matt Chapman, Sean Tucker, and many more!
