Islip Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently celebrated local Girl Scouts who have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award during the annual Silver Award Ceremony and Breakfast, which included a keynote address by the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Labor Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Rosalie Drago. The Silver Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by each recipient as they join an elite group of young women who earn the highest Girl Scout honor a Cadette Scout can achieve. Members of the West Islip Service Unit 617, East Islip Service Unit 640 and Bayshore/ Brightwaters Service Unit 642; Leah Giana, Hayden Wolin, Keira Johnson, Nicole Grieco, Erin Burns, Makenna Miller, Juliette Keingstein, Mikalia Budnik, Leah Stowers, Simone George, Arianna Sanchez, Kylie Lewis, Ava Morrisey, Elizabeth Camaratta, Madelyn Holliday, Yaslinne Corona, Emilia Cicale, Sage Lyons, Angelina Codispoti, Emma Demarco, Jessica Stowers, Leah Anthony, Sophia Mckierno, Abigail Ife, Lilith Gundersen, Isabella Petraglia, and Tyla Stephenson were among those acknowledged for this great accomplishment.

“The Silver Award is the highest distinction that Girl Scouts in this age range can earn,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino. “It takes a great deal of responsibility, dedication, and confidence for these Girls to complete these important projects as they create a notable positive impact in their community. I applaud these girls’ commitment to making a difference and joining a highly distinguished group of

accomplished young women.”

To achieve a Silver Award, Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them and would greatly benefit the world around them. To be eligible for a Silver Award, each recipient must complete their Cadette Journey before beginning their Silver Award project. To meet the Girl Scout Silver Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 50 hours toward their project.

Girls in grades 6-8 begin their Silver Award journey by identifying a civic or social issue they care about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive impact in her community by addressing an issue she feels passionate about. Through the process, Silver Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problemsolving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and inspiring others.

Troop 2261 members Leah Giana, Hayden Wolin, and Keira Johnson group created parent comfort kits for families of children who are patients at Good Samaritan Hospital. The kits included basic toiletries that the hospital does not have to supply to patients.

Nicole Grieco, Erin Burns and Makenna Miller created kits to help relieve the stress of children about to have surgery or other medical treatment in our local hospital. Each of the kits contained sensory toys to help calm children.

Juliette Keingstein and Mikalia Budnik filled kits for their local hospital to help staff with activities for developmentally delayed adult patients. The activities are to assist the hospital staff in finding new ways to calm

the nerves and occupy time of these patients.

Leah Stowers, Simone George, Arianna Sanchez and Kylie Lewis researched and organized a camping cookbook filled with every meal that could be cooked while camping.

Ava Morrisey, Elizabeth Camaratta, Madelyn Holliday and Yaslinne Corona researched traditional Girl Scout ceremonies and customs at camp and designed a book for other Girl Scout troops to use and enjoy on their trip to camp.

Emilia Cicale, Sage Lyons and Angelina Codispoti collected and donated storage bins and shoes for the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Emma Demarco, Jessica Stowers, Leah Anthony and Sophia Mckierno created a camp book filled with activities that are best fit for troop camping. After researching and testing the activities they designed and created the book themselves.

Abigail Ife, Lilith Gundersen, Isabella Petraglia and Tyla Stephenson built a bench for Walker Beach so that neighbors and veterans would have a place to sit by the flagpole to enjoy as they pay respects for those who have served.

Slow And Steady Wins The Race In Business

Most people know the story about the race between the turtle and rabbit. The rabbit is much faster than the turtle, but he gets a little too confident and careless, and ultimately loses to the much slower turtle. My takeaway from that story has always been, “slow and steady wins the race; don’t be the careless rabbit.”

I use the same takeaway in business, and tell everyone who asks for business advice, “it’s better to be the steady turtle than the careless rabbit.”

Running a business today can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Many business owners I meet will do everything they can to make their business a success, but they shouldn’t overextend themselves in the process. This is particularly true when it comes to finances.

One of the keys to

achieving financial stability as a business owner is to regularly review monthly expenses. Doing so can help identify areas where expenses can be cut as well as areas that are generating a positive return for your business (invest more in those areas).

In addition to reviewing your expenses, it’s critical to have reserves (and not just access to credit cards or lines of credit). We never know when the next

downturn may happen or when an emergency expense may occur. If you have 3-6 months’ worth of reserves, you can avoid dipping into personal savings or taking on debt to keep your business afloat.

Don’t worry if you don’t have the reserves in a bank account today; this is where the slow and steady part comes into play. Make regular deposits into a savings account each month; before too long, you will have one month’s worth of reserves, then two months, then it’s six months. The key is to start doing it TODAY!

Having your financial matters in order, namely expenses and reserves, will allow you to spend more time focusing on your customers and employees. If you can give both groups the attention they deserve, you will almost certainly win the race!

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is a 501(c)

(3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. To date, the organization has inducted more than 100 musicians and music industry executives, and also o ers education programs and scholarships to Long Island students, sponsors the Long Island Sound Award, and features traveling educational exhibits, including a state-of-the-art mobile museum.

Last year, the organization opened its doors to their new awe-inspiring 8,800 Sq Ft facility in Stony Brook, NY, which features a large exhibition area, theater, performance area and an o cial “Hall of Fame Museum.”

All entry tickets include free parking and access to all their location has to o er. As a non-profit, your admission fee and donations help to support their Education Scholarship program for high school students and their Health and Harmony program, bringing musicians and entertainers to senior centers, hospitals and other places of need.

“For over a decade, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame has been delighted to distribute tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships, providing support to numerous aspiring professional musicians and music teachers,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHOF Education Committee Chairman.

The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

WWII Veterans Receive Heroic Sendoff from MacArthur Airport to The National WWII Museum Through the Gary Sinise Foundation’s Soaring Valor Program

Islip, NY – In partnership with American Airlines, local Long Island high school students joined with 18 WWII heroes as they visited the National WWII Museum in New Orleans to learn about their legacy of service, share their history with younger generations and highlight the importance of service, sacrifice and defending our nation.

The Gary Sinise Foundation (GSF), established in 2011 by Actor and Humanitarian Gary Sinise to support our Nation’s veterans, heroes, first responders, defenders and their families who have sacrificed so much, brought WWII veterans to The National WWII Museum in New Orleans

as part of the GSF’s Soaring Valor Program, including eight WWII veterans from across Long Island.

Soaring Valor is a Gary Sinise Foundation program that started in 2015, as a way to bring World War II Veterans to their museum built in their honor, and to help spread messaging and education around the country, especially to the younger generations on the importance of service, sacrifice and defending our Nation.

Soaring Valor began after Mr. Sinise visited the museum with his Uncle Jack, a WWII veteran, where his uncle’s oral history was recorded to be preserved in the museum’s national

archive for future generations. When Uncle Jack passed away in 2014, the museum presented Uncle Jack’s recorded oral history to Mr. Sinise as a tribute to his legacy of service. The GSF now also sponsors a historian at the museum, who records these stories to preserve veterans’ legacies, especially with an estimated less than 500,000 WWII veterans still alive today. The GSF also brings high school students from around the country on such trips to pair them with a WWII veteran to pass such legacies of service to the younger generations and highlight the importance of service and sacrifice.

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long

Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them. Runner Jasmine Parreno Lets Nothing Stand In Her Way

Jasmine Parreno was an avid runner, and it was a huge part of her day-to-day life. Unfortunately, this passion of hers came under fire when she was diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2021.

She battled a serious case of double pneumonia and both her lungs became severely damaged as a result. It was in those moments where she truly questioned if she would ever get the chance to run again. Persistent long haulers proceeded to present its symptoms with acute respiratory failure. Still, slowly but surely, she began to recooperate and has since recovered– despite some mild symptoms.

According to Jasmine, it was time for her to get back on her feet. She decided to challenge herself and hit the pavement once again. She ran her first 5K with OG Training Academy in Lindenhurst.

She hopes that her story would serve as a means to spread motivation and hope to those that are struggling with any illness, whether it be mentally or physically. “Do not let an illness, of any kind, convince you that something is impossible,” Jasmine said. “It doesn’t mean that it will be easy, but definitely worth trying!”

Currently, Jasmine has signed up for her first Sprint Triathalon with New York Triathalon at Rockaway Beach and will continue her running career, letting nothing stand in her way!

United States Air Force Thunderbirds To Headline 19th Annual

Bethpage Air Show At Jones Beach Taking Place May 27-28, 2023

Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 27,

2023 and Sunday, May 28, 2023. This will be the demonstration team’s 9th performance at the Bethpage Air Show.

It was announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention yesterday that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the United States Marine Corps

F35B Lighting II will be performing, along with the world famous Skytpers, Long Island’s David Windmiller and Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot.

“Last year, we were very grateful that the Thunderbirds changed their schedule to perform for us on Memorial Day, after the Saturday

and Sunday weekend shows were rained out,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Suffice to say, we couldn’t be happier to welcome the team back to Long Island for our 2023 show!”

The American Heart Association Cites Research Showing The Health Benefits Of Regular Walking

Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll through your neighborhood or a power-walk in the park, the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, says taking part in physical activity is one of the best ways to manage stress, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and boost your mood.

Improved technology and the growing popularity of fitness applications, electronic wearables and step counters have made counting steps an easy way to count health benefits, as noted through a growing body of scientific research. A study presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2021 (EPI), found that:

•Study participants who took more steps in short spurts lived longer, regardless of how many steps they had in longer, uninterrupted bouts. The benefits leveled off at about 4,500 steps a day in short spurts.

•Compared to no daily steps, each initial increase of 1,000 steps a day was associated with a 28% decrease in death during the follow-up period.

•A 32% decrease in death was noted in participants who took more than 2,000 steps daily in uninterrupted bouts.

Middle-aged people who walked the most steps-per-day had a 43% lower risk of diabetes and a 31% lower risk of high blood pressure, compared to those with the fewest steps, according to research presented at the Association’s 2020 EPI Conference. For women in the study, each 1,000-step interval resulted in a 13% lower risk of obesity, and those with the highest step count were 61% less likely to have obesity, compared to women who walked the least.

People who took at least 7,000 steps a day had a 50% to 70% lower risk of dying compared with people who took fewer than 7,000 steps a day, according to a study published in September in the journal JAMA Open

Network. Researchers found that a higher daily step count (over 10,000 steps) lowered the risk of premature death from any cause among Black and white middle-aged women and men.

“Walking is a great way to improve your health and your mental outlook, and it doesn’t take a lot of expensive sporting equipment to do it. Put on a good pair of shoes and grab a water bottle and you’re ready to go,” said Donna K. Arnett,  M.S.P.H., Ph.D., B.S.N., a past president of the American Heart Association (2012-2013) and the dean and a professor in the department of epidemiology of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health in Lexington. “It doesn’t matter how fast or how far you walk, the important thing is to get moving. Counting steps doesn’t have to be part of a structured exercise program. Increasing your everyday activity, like parking slightly further from your destination, doing some extra housework or yardwork and even walking your dog can all add up to more steps and better health.”

The American Heart

Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity each week. You can knock that out in just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. And every minute of moderate to vigorous activity counts toward your goal.

Arnett points out that walking indoors at home, in a gym or even a mall can be easy ways to get beneficial physical activity. However, research indicates that being outdoors in areas rich with trees, shrubs and grass (i.e., a higher level of greenness) may help reduce the risk of dying from heart disease.

“Unfortunately, many people do not have access to safe walking trails or adequate green space. The American Heart Association continues to advocate for policy changes that make it easier for people to have access to safe places to walk, exercise and play, as well as sustainable transportation options that integrate walking, bicycling and wheelchair use,” Arnett said. “The easier it is for people to engage in physical activity in all aspects of their daily life, the more likely we are to achieve healthier, longer lives for everyone.”

When remodeling a home with the ultimate goal of making it more attractive to prospective buyers, homeowners can benefit from taking stock of current trends, including the style of home that’s most popular. According to a 2020 Homes.com survey of more than 5,000 adults across the United States,

modern farmhouse is the most favored house style. The survey asked participants to choose from a selection of styles, including mid-century modern ranch, Spanish colonial/southwest, bohemian craftsman, Italianate, French chateau, and Tudor. The modern farmhouse style was the most popular

choice in 42 of the 50 states, proving that home style preference is not beholden to geography. Respondents gave a host of reasons for favoring the modern farmhouse look, including that the style is “aesthetically appealing but not boring” and that it looks “simple, cozy, and not too busy.”
