Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-profit organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families.

In this article we focus on their vital role in promoting foster care across Long Island.

As next month is quickly approaching, it is appropriate to mention that May is National Foster Care Month, an initiative conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services. The month is devoted to “ensuring a bright future for more than 407,000 children and youth in foster care.” The average age is 8 years old for those children, and there is just about an event split between how many of them are boys and how many are girls.

The month acknowledges foster parents, family members, volunteers, policymakers and others who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections.

Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker.

The goal is adoption for 28 percent.

On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identification and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certifications in parenting skills.

Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reunification for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families.

The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest.

Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulfilling lives.

he decision to buy a home is significant.

Real estate is the biggest investment the average person will make in his or her lifetime, which underscores just how significant the home buying decision can be.

The real estate experts at Zillow recently reported that the national median price of a home in the United States is $272,446.

However, since the National Association of Realtors reported a record low housing inventory late in 2020, the average house price has been rising rapidly nationwide. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis estimates the median home sales price at $374,900, and certain states have much higher prices. WOWA, a real estate and finance technology company, says the average sale price of a home in Canada was $679,051 in July 2021.

Most people do not have $300,000 to $600,000 in savings on hand to purchase a home in cash. That means they’ll need to rely on financing to pay for their dream homes.

Conventional lending Conventional lending refers to when a bank or another financial institution loans a home buyer money to buy a home. This is one of the most common ways to fund a home purchase.

Personal credit score as well as credit history help determine eligibility and interest rates for conventional loans.

Spring Landscaping Tips

ne of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start in knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year.

While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”). Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting

flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another cold day.

Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after a spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. This year’s Derby horses and the outriders as Stakes will be a live event at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, 829 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, they enter the arena. The NY. The Derby Stakes will feature Pal-O-Mine’s staff riding its horses in six competitive races that showcase both the herd’s versatility and the riders’ talent as horsemen and women. Among them will be a “Seattle Slow” walking race and a “Smoky Jones” canter race. Prerace activities include: interactive farm games, hat contest, paddock walk, craft fair and a photo booth.

Admission is $10.00 per person (under 5 are free) and all donations from the event will go to supporting the care of the Pal-O-Mine herd of therapy horses.

In addition to making a donation, there are sponsorship opportunities for Long Island families, businesses, associations, and civic groups. The

different sponsorship levels include: Race Sponsors at $250.00 per race and Parade of Breeds Sponsor at $750.00.

PSEG Long Island Encourages Eligible Customers To Take Advantage Of Financial Assistance Increased global demand and lagging production are driving up energy prices worldwide and abnormally cold winter temperatures across the United States have increased regional demand for natural gas, a volatile commodity used to generate electricity. PSEG Long Island understands the heightened financial pressures this may place on households, and encourages customers to take advantage of programs that exist to help people struggling with utility bills.

There are also many ways customers can lower their bills by using less electricity.

“Like people all over New York State, we know our customers have felt an impact from the unusually high commodity prices of natural gas this winter and that, for some, it compounds financial pressures they are already under due to the pandemic,” said Rick Walden, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Customer Services. “We have been working hard for many months to reach our customers in arrears and let them know we are here to help. We want our customers to know that financial help is available, and to give them tools to help maintain their household budget while these market conditions persist.”

Like many electricity providers around the nation, electricity for PSEG Long Island’s customers is purchased from a variety of different generation sources, including natural gasburning power plants. The increase in natural gas prices has driven up the costs to generate electricity.

In accordance with a policy established by the LIPA Board of Trustees, a hedging program is in place to reduce the volatility of power supply costs for customers. Hedging provides price stability in case of unforeseen commodity market and weather events that drive up prices.

PSEG Long Island also continues to partner with social service agencies and perform outreach to assist

customers who have fallen behind on their bills. For the past five months, field representatives have been making customer visits, connecting one-on-one with residential customers who have past-due account balances to discuss payment methods, accept a payment or work out a payment plan to pay down balances over time. PSEG Long Island representatives work with customers to find the best solution for the household.

Representatives have visited with more than 20,000 residential customers and 10,000 of those customers have entered into deferred payment agreements.

Assistance available to those struggling with bills PSEG Long Island wants to work with any customer struggling to pay their bills and help them find a solution. The company encourages anyone in arrears to call 1-800-490-0025 so a representative can help them develop a deferred payment agreement tailored to the needs of their household.

Additionally, PSEG Long Island wants to make customers aware of the financial assistance programs offered by New York State: The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) can provide up to $751 to eligible homeowners and renters depending on income, household size and how they heat their home. A family of four may have a maximum gross monthly income of $5,249, or an annual gross income of $62,983, and still qualify for benefits. This benefit is open until April 29, 2022 and may be extended if funding remains available. For more information, visit https:// mybenefits.ny.gov/.

The Residential Arrears Supplement (RAS) to HEAP. New York State is also providing $250 million in additional federal funding to help low-income households pay heating utility arrears up to $10,000 per household.

So far, almost 115,000 RAS

benefits have been issued, and $183 million in arrears have been paid off for eligible households. At the beginning of March, $67 million in funding was still available for customers to apply for and, if eligible, secure for their PSEG Long Island and/or their National Grid accounts.

More information is available at https://otda.ny.gov/ programs/heap/#regulararrears-supplement-benefit Emergency HEAP. $90 million in federal funding through Emergency HEAP was made available to help low- and middle-income New Yorkers avoid having their home heating disconnected or exhausting their heating source amid fuel price increases. At the beginning of March, $58 million in funding remained available. There are two Emergency HEAP benefits this year. If you are experiencing an emergency, you can apply for this benefit by reaching out to your local Department of Social Services location, which you can find here: https:// otda.ny.gov/programs/heap/ contacts/ For low-income households facing noheat situations, the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance is also accepting applications for its heating equipment repair or replacement benefit. Eligible homeowners can now apply for up to $3,000 for repair or $6,500 for replacement of a furnace, boiler or other direct heating equipment necessary to keep the household’s primary heating source working. Additionally, eligible households can receive energy efficiency services, which includes the cleaning of primary heating equipment to allow for its safe and efficient operation.

are automatically placed on PSEG Long Island’s Household Assistance rate and the residential energy affordability program providing energy efficiency measures and suggestions to help lower consumption.

How customers can lower their bills The most effective thing customers can to do lower their bills is to use electricity more efficiently. Here are some helpful tips: Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer.

Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items

plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off.

Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats.

Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more.

Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed.

Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air

down into a room.

Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money.

Install a high efficiency air source heat pump (ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Additionally, PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort PLUS program offers enhanced rebates for customers who meet certain income qualifications.

Historical Society Of Islip Hamlet And The Islip Public Library "Plum Island: A World Unto Itself"

On Friday, May 20th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet and the Islip Public Library are co-sponsoring a program titled "Plum Island: A World Unto Itself" by author/ historian Amy Folk. Islands are by nature mystical, mysterious and mutable. So it seems fitting that Plum Island, located at the tip of Long Island, NY is shaped like

a question mark. But, this island is different - it is unlike any other island anywhere in the world.

Through several wars and many incarnations the island has remained in a semi natural state. But for many in the 21st century, Plum Island - heavily patrolled and off-limits to virtually everyone - remains shrouded in secrecy and is

viewed with skepticism to apprehension about what really goes on there. The program will be held at the Islip Public Library, 71 Monell Ave., 7-9 pm, is free and open to the public.
