EMTs and EMS Honored For Surprise Delivery
The arrival of a special delivery was celebrated at the April Town Board meeting. About 2 months ago, on Saturday February 25th, Amy and Ian Steinberg were preparing for bed, as expecting and soon-to-be parents. When they found themselves on the Long Island Expressway the next morning … at 2:00 AM, they quickly learned the true meaning of the word “soon.”
So eager was their little girl to meet her proud parents, she decided that their arrival at Katz Women’s Hospital in Queens, would not come
soon enough. Now actively in labor, Amy and Ian parked their car on the shoulder of the L.I.E. near the Bay Shore exit and called 911.
Within minutes, Suffolk County PD Officers, Sgt. Justin Carey, PO Matthew Siesto, PO Arnold Reyes, and PO Kenneth Bunger arrived on scene to render aid to the couple.
Less than a minute after that, Brentwood Legion Ambulance EMTs: Nelson Lopez, Colin Richardson, Christina Autera, Cynthia Casteneda and Emily Cassar responded and moved Amy into the
ambulance where she gave birth seconds after, to a healthy baby girl: Cora Baylie Steinberg.
“Our congratulations to the happy parents! Such a beautiful baby girl she is, with such a beautiful name,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “And, I should note, baby Cora’s middle name “Baylie,” is spelled “B-A-Y” (for Bay Shore exit), “L-I-E” (for Long Island Expressway). Her first name Cora, represents the three EMT’s whose names begin with the letter C,” she added. Amy and Cora joined the celebration via FaceTime.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ISLIP HAMLET - On Wed., May 24th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet will host David Morrison, retired LIRR branch manager and author of books on the history of the railroad. Please join us to hear stories about the railroad that shaped Long Island history for over 150 years, focusing on the Montauk Branch and the Islip Station. Dave was a driving force in getting the iconic weathervane on the Station's cupola installed in memory of the creator of the original, Islip H.S. graduate Bernardino F. Genchi, who gave his life for his country in Vietnam. The program will be held at the Islip Public Library, 71 Monell Ave. and is free and open to the public, 7-9 pm. For more info: 631-559-2915, www.isliphamlethistory.org.
It’s Safe Digging Month:
PSEG Long Island
Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Start A Project
April is National Safe Digging Month and PSEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators that the law requires them to call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out.
Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical
line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and fines.

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island
Rebuilding Together
Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.
To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.
The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”
Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.
Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts
LaLota Announces Hundreds Of Defense Jobs Coming To Suffolk County
to those who need a helping hand.”
The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.
Here are ways you can get involved:
•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.
•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.
•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.
•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.
When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.
If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellelambert@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.
Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01) announced that hundreds of new jobs would be coming to Suffolk County after Raytheon Technologies Corporation was awarded a contract by the federal government totaling $113,628,201. The contract will cover costs for Raytheon to develop MK 15 closein weapon system (CIWS) upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and associated hardware. One
of the manufacturing facilities Raytheon will use for this contract is located in Hauppauge, N.Y.
“I am thrilled that hundreds of high-paying defense manufacturing jobs will be coming to Suffolk County. As the son of a former Grumman Secretary and a Navy Veteran, I understand how important the defense industrial base is to local families and Long Island’s
economy,” said LaLota. “Now, as a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the strategic role Long Island’s defense manufacturing base plays in ensuring America’s military can deter the next conflict, or if needed, win it. I will always work to make sure that Suffolk County maintains our important role in our nation’s defense.”

It’s time to put those old bicycles and sewing machines to good use. On Saturday, May 13 (rain or shine) from 11 am to 2 pm, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island will hold its annual used bicycle and sewing machine collection in the parking lot of South Huntington Public Library (145 Pidgeon Hill Road, Huntington Station). The items collected will then be reconditioned by the international non-profit Pedals for Progress (P4P) and sent to Belize.
The mission of P4P is to foster sustainable economic development by recycling bicycles and sewing machines from the US and shipping them to motivated people in the developing world. For many in the US, Belize is seen as an ideal vacation destination but beyond the beaches lies tremendous poverty. Approximately 50% of Belize’s population

is children and youth below the age of nineteen. A large percentage of this population is concentrated in the urban ghettos of the south-side of Belize City, specifically in the Port Loyola area. Many of these children live in poverty and are exposed to violence, crime, and civil unrest.
Information about the P4P Belize program can be found at: https://www.p4p. org/category/belize
This is the 19th bike/ sewing machine collection organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island. To date, RPCVLI has collected 1707 bicycles and 282 sewing machines that
have been distributed to Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, Guatemala, Albania and Kosovo. amongst others.
“Members of Returned Peace Corps volunteers of Long Island see this project as a way of continuing our commitment to support programs in developing countries,” says Kathy Williams-Ging
of Huntington Station, who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru and is co-coordinator of the May 13th collection.. Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition or a working portable sewing machine is urged to donate the item. Since it costs $40 to collect, process, ship,
rebuild and distribute each bicycle, a donation toward shipping costs is necessary (suggested minimum $20 per item). All cash and material donations are fully deductible and a receipt will be provided on site. The program does not accept “bikes for parts,” disassembled bikes or tricycles.

It’s Safe Digging Month: PSEG Long Island Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Start A Project
Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations.
“Customers are getting the message. Last year there were more than 215,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 44,000 requests to 811.”
According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven
association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require it. All digging projects require a call to 811.
A free call to 811 in the service area automatically connects the caller to the local New York one-call center, which collects information about digging projects. The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas.
Here’s important information to consider:
· Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries.
Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage.
Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig.
Call 811 at least two business days before the commencement of each job to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located. Each facility owner must respond by providing the excavator with a positive confirmation indicating that marks are in place where utility lines are buried or that there are no existing facilities in the area of the proposed work. This service is free of charge.
Be sure to wait until all of the utilities have responded. Don’t dig until lines have been marked or you have received confirmation that the area is clear of facilities.
Property owners must maintain and respect the marks. Always hand dig within 2 feet of marked lines to find the existing facilities before using mechanized equipment.
If gas lines are damaged or there is a gas smell when excavating, call 911 immediately from a safe area.
Calling before you dig is more than a good idea − it’s the law. Additional information, including a booklet on safe excavating practices and the protection of underground facilities, can be found on the PSEG Long Island website.
Benefits To Cooking Your Own Meals
Aging men and women may be tempted to eschew home cooking entirely. After all, there are plenty of convenient frozen or takeout foods available that can be whipped up in a snap. However, there are certain benefits to cooking your own meals. John Moore, DO, an Aetna medical
director and senior health specialist, says that cooking can be good for helping to stave off cognitive decline. Dr. Moore notes that, when cooking, the mind is put to use following a recipe and learning new skills and tasks. Furthermore, cooking for oneself can boost seniors’ self-
confidence, reassuring them that they can handle an important daily task without having to rely on their family for meals. As long as it is deemed safe (i.e., no sign of cognitive decline or forgetfulness), seniors should be encouraged to continue cooking.

Demand For Qualified, Talented Nurses To Grow In The Years To Come
The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near
future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly
large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other
health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.
