All Kids Fair Set This year’s All Kids Fair features many new attractions and guests while bringing back favorites from years past. A new addition to the Sunday, April 29th event is The Butterfly Experience. Children and adults will be able to watch the beautiful, multi-colored butterflies flying around in a huge tent, or, for a small fee, will

be able to enter the tent with a feeding stick and have the butterflies come to them. QuackerJack, the beloved mascot of the Long Island Ducks, will be visiting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to delight Long Island’s children. The lovely Alexa Cox, Miss Long Island Teen 2018, will be available for a meetand-greet from 11 a.m. to

3 p.m. Sophie Bravo from Food Network’s Chopped Junior will be doing a lemon bars demonstration and meet-and-greet from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Since moving to its larger venue, the Hilton Long Island/Huntington (also known as the Huntington Hilton), the Fair has been able to accommodate a bounce house, petting zoo,

and additional vendors and classes, which was enjoyed by 2500 people this past April. Children will enjoy a large number of additional activities and “freebies,” including face painting, photo booth, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, train tables, water ice samples, a video game trailer, and an 8 1/2 foot

snake and other animals to touch. Admission is $5 per person and free for ages 2 and younger and includes everything listed. Ever year the fun-filled All Kids Fair offers exciting educational and health activities to interest kids and their families. The Fair offers choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have

Don’t Forget the Tomatoes I have recently taken to food shopping more frequently, with the intention of picking up “just a few things” during each visit to the grocery store, eliminating the need for a cart and - theoretically - such a large expense in one shot. The cost, well, it depends on the particular outing and what items are on the menu. The cart… let’s just say I have yet to master the art of consolidating my purchases to one of those convenient little hand baskets they provide by the front entrance. Case in point: on my last trip to one of my favorite food stores, I meandered through the aisles selecting a bit of this and that. At about the halfway point, as I was nearing the deli counter, I noticed that my basket was nearly overflowing. The gentleman taking my cold cut order seemed to note the same fact simultaneously,

remarking, Are you gonna carry all that?? I’m going to try, I replied with a smile, while bracing my basket on the edge of the shelving in front of me. My order complete, I continued on my way into the next section of the store, surveying the shelves to determine how many more items I could possibly carry. As I contemplated, I felt a tap on the shoulder. I turned to find a man standing with my cold cuts, those just purchased several steps back, in hand, apparently having fetched them from the floor behind me. Whoops. On to the produce section, where I attempted to juggle tomatoes while picking out cucumbers. And there they went, rolling down the aisle, nearly taking out a young mother and her child. Mom, it’s a little red ball!

the girl squealed, taking off after the tomato. Oh my, I’m so sorry! I hurriedly gathered up the rogue produce and headed to checkout, resigned to the fact that I simply could not carry one more thing. There, I was met with a similarly bewildered look from the cashier, who watched as I piled my merchandise onto the conveyer belt, one item at a time. Do you have bags? she asked. Why yes, yes I do, three in fact. She chuckled, Three bags and no cart? Yes, I replied sheepishly. Yes, I recognize the irony in that. After my total was calculated {not quite as inexpensive as planned}, the cashier said Here’s a tip: even if you think you’re only running in for a gallon of milk, take a cart. Always. Take a cart. One day, I’ll learn.

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to

cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Please visit their website at www.FriendsOfKaren.org for additional information. Are you someone who prefers to donate? If yes, you can do so by donating a gift card today. Many families struggle to find the money for everyday essentials such as food when they are also responsible for paying such large medical bills; therefore, food store and restaurant gift cards are much appreciated so Friends of Karen can pass them along to a family in need. Lastly, if you would like to get involved with Friends of Karen through another avenue that is not listed, such as volunteering in their office or in a specific way that is dear to you, they would like to know! Please contact their Development Associate, Rebecca Mowl, at RMowl@

Continued From 7 dinner reception and awards will follow at the Meadow Brook Club for both courses. For tennis, a light morning breakfast will be served with match and cardio play to follow. Lunch will be served after the morning tournament. An afternoon match play has been added to this year’s event. Brisk walking around the golf course and playing tennis has many proven health benefits. Adults

may gain as much as two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular, vigorous exercise–like very brisk walking–even if they don’t begin exercising until middle age. Walking is the single most effective way for many Americans to establish and continue a healthy lifestyle to improve their heart health. Teen entrepreneurs from 63 local high schools competed in the Finals of the eighth annual Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Business Plan Competition. Five of those teams will advance to the National Business Plan Competition, held at the Microsoft Technology Center and Pier 92 in New York Citythis month. These five teams will represent LI VE at the nationals in NYC on Monday, April 16th and Tuesday, April 17th, 2018. Finalists were determined by their combined performance in the oral and written presentations of their firm’s business plans. Each day of the robust Trade Show event, nearly 1,000 students marketed their firm’s virtual goods and services, and networked with students, business leaders and college mentors from across the metro area. Firms participated in competitions in the categories of Company Branding, Company Newsletter, E-Commerce Website, Employee Handbook, Sales Materials, Video Commercial, Booth Design, Salesmanship and Impact Marketing. Each high school class was represented by a student team in the form of a business. Those business teams moving to the Virtual Enterprises National Competition are: • Elluminate, PlainviewOld Bethpage High School • EVOTech, PatchogueMedford High School • Flash Task, John F. Kennedy High School (Bellmore-Merrick) • Fresh Direct, Islip High School • SPFy, Westhampton Beach High School The LI VE is a collaborative effort that includes the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Technical Assistance Center of New York, Nassau BOCES, Eastern Suffolk BOCES,

“Congratulations to everyone who participated,” said Ellen Palazzo, LI VE Regional Director and Long Island Field Associate for the CTE Technical Assistance Center of New York. “This program is an excellent opportunity for students to

gain real-world experience and practice their business skills. Over the last eight years, we’ve grown from six teams to 90 in the Long Island region,” continued Palazzo. “Virtual Enterprises International is a vibrant applied learning experience that

challenges students to form and operate a profitable business in a virtual environment connected by a banking system. This opportunity builds both college and career readiness.” “The Long Island Virtual Enterprises

Network is supported as part of the Perkins Grant Consortium,” said Ms. Gene Silverman, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs, and facilitator of the consortium. “This is

one of the many ways the grant enriches the lives of students throughout Long Island, by giving them real-world workplace skills while still in high school.”

Unexpected fireworks right outside your window can be startling for anyone. For veterans coping with post traumatic stress disorder, the sudden, loud blasts can trigger flashbacks, anxiety or worse. These signs will encourage neighbors to communicate with

veterans and be more aware before setting off fireworks on the 4th of July. The signs will be distributed on Saturday June 23rd, between the hours of 9 a.m. to 12 noon located at the Community Ambulance Company 420 Lakeland Avenue, Sayville NY 11782. You must

RSVP for a sign by going to https://veteransptsd. eventbrite.com/. Please print your ticket and bring it with you to obtain a sign. We will be offering them while supplies last and one per person. The distribution will be conveniently located in the front of the building,

first floor, making it easy to drive up and obtain your sign. If you are a veteran suffering from PTSD or you are family or friends of a veteran suffering from PTSD, please contact the Veterans Crisis Line at 1.800.273.8255 and Press 1. You can also chat online

or send a text message to 838255 to recieve support 24 hours a day. Feel free to share the attached on all social media platforms. Any questions please phone me direct at 631.926.9071.

In preparation for July 4th, the Community Ambulance Company partnering with Suffolk Legislator William Lindsay will be offering free yard lawn signs to veterans throughout Suffolk County that read, "Veteran lives here. Please be courteous with fireworks."

Mock Trial Volunteers

Members of the East Islip High School Mock Trial team worked as volunteers at the American Mock Trial Association Opening Round Championship Series tournament in March. The East Islip students were invited to this college mock trial tournament, held at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip, by the event’s coordinator, Harry Tilis, the president of the Suffolk County Lawyers Association. Known as the Purple Team because of their

distinctive purple uniform shirts, East Islip’s students were responsible for guiding judges and competitors through the courthouse, gathering and delivering important paperwork, and helping Tilis keep the tournament running smoothly. The ORCS tournament was one of several being held around the country. College mock trial teams from some of the top colleges and universities in the nation, including Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Tufts, competed at the

ORCS for a chance to move on to the National College Mock Championship. “What a great group of thoughtful and helpful young people,” said Tilis, praising the East Islip volunteers. “Their generous spirit and respectful and cheerful outlook made this weekend a breeze.” Senior Angela Loizides was especially excited to attend, as her sister Elizabeth, an alumna of East Islip’s Class of 2015 and former East Islip Mock Trial member, was competing for Wellesley College at the tournament. “I learned so much from watching the college teams,” said sophomore Tyler O’Neil. “It was a great experience.” Patsy Lester, East Islip’s coach, also participated at the tournament, serving as scoring judge. “I’m grateful to Mr. Tilis for offering my students this opportunity, and so proud of them for giving up their weekend to help others,” said Lester. Five Ways To Protect Your Vision (NAPSI)—Did you know that women are at greater risk for blindness and vision problems? The National Eye Institute, part of NIH, reminds women, especially those over age 40, to make their eye health a priority by taking five simple steps to protect their sight. Get a dilated eye exam. Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to know if your eyes are healthy and you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have one. Live a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic

conditions, and not smoking can lower your risk of eye disease. Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease, since many are hereditary. Use protective eyewear. Prevent eye injuries when doing chores around the house, playing sports, or working on the job. Wear safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, or eye guards that are made of polycarbonate. Talk to your eye care provider about the appropriate type of protective eyewear for your needs.

Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase your risk for getting an eye disease like cataract or age-related macular degeneration, which is a progressive eye disease leading to blindness. When purchasing sunglasses, look for those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. These steps can help keep your eyes healthy and prevent vision loss and blindness from eye disease. For more information, visit www.nei.nih.gov/hvm.
