As the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) gets ready to kick off its Spring Season in our 10 leagues from Long Island to the Canadian border, the growth of our programs has created a need for additional referees and assistant refs. There are many wonderful things that happen when a person starts to ref including earning money, having the best view of the action, learning to manage people, learning more about the game, staying or becoming fit, expanding yourself by leaving your comfort zone as well as meeting the greatest people on soccer fields, including your new officiating colleagues. Becoming a youth soccer ref could be one of the best decisions you ever make!

Eastern New York is seeking new referees to be in the middle and/or on the line as assistant referees in youth soccer games. The minimum age is 14 years old to become certified. Classes are happening throughout the state and they consist of an online learning process wrapped up by a field session. The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together. The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.

In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.

Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.

“I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and

smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)

2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.

3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. On Thursday, April 27th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet, Islip Library and Islip Schools will co-host an evening with Islip’s own John Monteleone, one of the world’s greatest instrument builders and the film about his work, “John Monteleone: The Chisels are Calling”.

Known by many as a modern day Stradivari of the

guitar, John’s instruments are on permanent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His archtop guitars are sought after by both jazz and rock musicians including Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits).

The film examines John’s life, passion, talent and highlights the essence of his unique artistry.

Mark Knopfler’s song “Monteleone” includes Mark’s description of how John inspired him to write the song and how the lyrics, which start with, “The chisels are calling / It’s time to make sawdust,” came about.

Islip BOE Recognizes Dozens Of “Champion” Students

The Islip School District recently honored outstanding student achievements at a Night of Champions celebration during a board of education meeting. Elementary and secondary students who demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics, music and leadership received certificates honoring their accomplishments while their proud families looked on.

“We have incredible teachers who give the students the tools they need and the encouragement to succeed, but tonight what we’re doing is awarding the students that have taken that even further, that have the motivation and the drive to achieve greater things than we have set

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www.ssaudubon. org/areas-we-serve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County. For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or

attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the reason for applying for the scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript of grades, and at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one.
