It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need.

Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

Each year, the East Islip Teachers’ Association sponsors a Family Assistance Fund during the holiday season. Active and retiree EITA members, in conjunction with district office administration and staff, donate money to be distributed to local families in need to help bring some joy to their holidays. Since its inception in 1984, the EITA Family Assistance Fund has raised and distributed over $400,000.

Thanks to the generosity of staff, retirees and administration, the EITA was able to donate over $17,500 to nearly 90 local families in December.

“Supporting our community in any way we can has always been a priority for the East Islip Teachers’ Association,” EITA President Christopher Neske said.

“We hope these donations helped make the season brighter and look forward to continuing this great tradition in years to come.”

East Islip High School’s wrestling team captured the League V championship tournament title at home on Feb. 3 for the third time in the past three years and the 11th time in its program’s rich history, placing first overall as a

team with 229 total points.

The Redmen had 13 overall place winners who earned All-League honors and qualified for the Suffolk County tournament, to be held at Stony Brook University on Feb. 10 and 11.

East Islip’s three league champions were freshman Gryffin Alfalla (20-3) at 131 pounds, senior Anthony Avitabile (39-1) at 145 pounds and senior Nick Groneman (39-2) at 190 pounds. League finalists included sophomore

Rocco DeStefano (343) at 101 pounds, senior Justin Mazzuco (15-5) at 124 pounds, senior Dylan Aristides (19-4) at 131 pounds, Christopher Coleman (31-8) at 170 pounds and junior Chase Canfora (18-9) at 215

pounds. Third place winners for the Redmen were junior Anthony Leidtke-Merida at 116 pounds, senior Sean O’Shea at 138 pounds, sophomore Matt D’Amico at 170 pounds and sophomore Christian Horeis at 190 pounds, while senior Brian

Csoban placed fourth at 285 pounds.

“It was a great team effort to capture the league title,” coach Michael Longobardi said. “I’m excited for the boys and look forward to the county tournament next weekend.”

Connetquot/East Islip Boys Swim Team Takes Second In League Championships The combined Connetquot/East Islip boys varsity swimming and diving team, coached

by Alex Scichilone, took second overall in the Suffolk County League 1 championships. In

individual performances, Jack Milligan came in second overall in the 1000-meter butterfly

and fourth overall in the 200-meter freestyle, Brayden Black finished third overall in the

50-meter freestyle and fifth place overall in the fourth overall in the 100-meter butterfly.
