Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

Each year, the All Kids Fair brings fun and different reasons for kids and their families to attend their annual event. The April 29th All Kids Fair will continue in this tradition. QuackerJack, the Long Island Ducks’ mascot, will visit to the delight of children across Long Island. In addition, the lovely Alexa Cox, Miss Long Island Teen 2018,

will be available for a meetand-greet. The All Kids Fair is a Long Island “happening” each spring. Since moving to its larger venue, the Hilton Long Island/ Huntington (also known as the Huntington Hilton), the Fair has been able to accommodate a bounce house, petting zoo, and additional vendors and classes, which was enjoyed

by 2,500 people this past April. Children will enjoy a large number of additional activities and “freebies,” including face painting, photo booth, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, train tables, water ice samples, and an 8 ½ foot snake and other animals to touch. Admission is $5 per

these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. The Gala will include dinner, a unique art auction, music by the band X-Sessions and a possible Skype call with the children at their orphanage in Meru. Contact Kevin Mann to purchase your tickets now ($200/person) and be a part of something that truly matters!

to enlighten, inspire and empower families in the community. S h o e m a k e r ’ s presentation will include more than 100 contemporary, handson displays highlighting drug placebos, modern paraphernalia, concealment devices and drug-test countermeasures. Shoemaker will also

address the growing use of synthetics and edible drugs, as well as e-cigarettes and vape pens. A question-andanswer period will allow attendees to learn more about specific concerns. While admission is free, advance registration at www.islip.eventbrite.com is recommended to avoid disappointment.

Interactive Journey Fourth-graders at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School participated in an interactive in-school social studies field trip on January 8th called “Journeys into American Indian Territory.” Guest instructors for the day included anthropologist Robert Vetter and Cheyenne Elk Clan member Richie Cornacchio. The immersive event began with an assembly that introduced the students to stereotypes and truths about Native Americans, both from the past and in the present. The students recognized the importance of educating present-day Indians about their language and religion, in order to keep their culture a prominent part of their lives.

The students participated in four different activities throughout the day. In one, Vetter led a workshop that described the government that was developed by local Indian groups. The students participated by creating rules and identifying characteristics of strong leaders. The school’s STEAM room was transformed into a museum where the students observed artifacts used in daily Indian life – including jewelry, clothing and tools – which were explained and demonstrated. The students were also able to walk through a miniature longhouse that was constructed by the presenters. The other two activities were created by the school’s fourth-grade teachers.

During “Story Time,” the students listened to Indian legends and discussed how they could relate to their current lives, while in the “Game Room,” students participated in an activity described in the book “The Sign of the Beaver,” using modern-day materials but brainstorming about what items may have been used 400 years ago. The day ended with a sing-a-long in the auditorium, with students and teachers listening to a song created by Cornacchio as well as singing an inspirational Indian song. “The ‘Journeys’ program was an interesting and exciting opportunity for us to learn more about Indian life,” said Principal James Cameron.

Another Organizations YOU Can Become Involved With...

Centro Cultural Hispano ~ Oyster Bay www.cchoben.org This non-profit works towards the educational, social and economic development of the Hispanic community of Oyster Bay, East Norwich and surrounding areas. They are seeking volunteers to help students at their after-school program from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Oyster Bay. For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. Volunteers will work one-on-one with children from K-6 with homework, reading and writing. Please contact Johanna Velasquez at 516.558.7020 or at office@cchoben.org to volunteer! Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. You can visit their website at www.HopeChildrensFund.org or contact Kevin Mann at KevinMannMail@gmail. com to learn more and view photos of

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized The Islip Girl Powered Robotics (GPR) team for qualifying to compete in the Long Island Championship at Smithtown High School on February 11th. They enthusiastically shared the

history of their project and its capabilities. The girls hope to advance and qualify to attend the Eastern Regional in Scranton, Pennsylvania in March. The unique all girl GPR team is comprised of seven high school students,

who were self-started and funded, have now expanded to become affiliated with the Islip School District. They recently participated in First Tech Challenge robotics competition, performing extremely well in the two qualifiers.

They have earned several awards, including First Place Winning Alliance Captain, along with the Think Award at the Center Moriches Qualifier on Sunday, January 14th. In the FIRST Tech Challenge, teams are

challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head alliance format. Students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and

sharing ideas. “It is inspiring to see young people challenging themselves and reaching their goals,” said Legislator Flotteron.

CHOSEN FOR LISFA - Young violinist Ella Tantillo, a fifth-grader at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School, was selected for this year’s Long Island String Festival Association concert, recognizing her as one of Suffolk County’s finest school string orchestra musicians. Exploring MTV A select group of 20 East Islip High School students in technology teacher James Connell’s video production, broadcast television and independent film classes recently visited the studios of MTV News in New York City. The field trip was facilitated by Dan Montalto, the digital, television video development and digital strategy director at MTV Networks, as a way for the students to examine possible future career paths. The students also had a chance to speak with

several other professionals who work at MTV News and see what their daily work lives are like, including social media manager Josh Edwards, teleprompter operator Alissa Godwin, hip-hop writer Charles Holmes, studio and lighting technician Rory Moon, video director Steven Roberts, producer Stacey Sommer and editorial director Rebecca Thomas. The day was filled with everything from guest speakers to watching newly edited MTV News digital essays, a trip through the

editing suite as well as a film shoot within their own studio room. The students’ videos were edited and delivered back to Connell’s class by the end of the day. “I was so happy that the students got the chance to see what it’s like to work in a professional television or online studio environment,” said Connell. “Many of my students are pursuing careers within the field and got a real in-depth look into what could be their very EXPLORING MTV - A selected group of 20 East Islip High School students in own future employment technology teacher James Connell’s video production, broadcast television and might look and feel like.” independent film classes recently visited MTV News in New York City to explore future careers. Five Tips On Moving mover—you won’t have to worry about renting equipment, paying hidden costs, handling heavy or bulky items and being responsible if something goes wrong. Here are five hints to help.

1. Be wary of any “guaranteed” estimates offered over the phone or online. Make sure you show the mover everything that needs to be moved, and get at least three estimates to compare. Avoid any that are too high or too low.

2. Check the company’s ratings with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer websites, and ask family and friends for referrals. 3. Make sure all agreements are in writing, and get a copy of everything

you sign, especially the bill of lading. Never sign any blank forms. 4. Ask questions if you don’t understand something, and make sure your mover has your cell phone number to reach you.

5. Find a certified professional mover. For free estimates at no obligation to you, get free referrals from the American Moving & Storage Association at www.Moving.org.

Sleep Better, Stress Less (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday

stress. “When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress

and getting a good night’s rest start with evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition,

agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements, exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to

help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other

supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep. 3. Evaluate your mattress--consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older.

Five Ways To Protect Your Vision (NAPSI)—Did you know that women are at greater risk for blindness and vision problems? The National Eye Institute, part of NIH, reminds women, especially those over age 40, to make their eye health a priority by taking five simple steps to protect their sight. Get a dilated eye exam.

Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to know if your eyes are healthy and you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have one. Live a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic

conditions, and not smoking can lower your risk of eye disease. Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease, since many are hereditary. Use protective eyewear.

Hospitality Job Openings Suffolk County Department of Labor and the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning, Ridgewells will manage the recruitment, hiring and training of all event staff to support the large scale catering operation at the U.S. Open. A mix of frontand-back of house catering positions are available that include tent supervisors, beverage managers, buffet managers, bartenders and servers, tent chefs, sous chefs, kitchen assistants, action station attendants, dishwashers, and operation helpers. This is the fifth time the championship is being hosted at the historic golf course, which will be held from June 11th – 17th at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. The golf championship is anticipated to generate between $120 million $130 million in economic impact for the region.

This analysis is based on expected weekly attendance of over 200,000 people, which include players, fans, volunteers, vendors and media. There will also be approximately 8,000 hotel rooms booked along with an average of 3,500 temporary job opportunities, with many more to be unveiled in the coming months ahead. The championship is expected to be viewed by more than 80 million people in over 150 countries, creating additional tourism exposure for Suffolk County. Interested candidates are encouraged to send their resumes to usopenstaff@ ridgewells.com and indicate the position in the subject line. For more information on county-wide job fairs, please call 631.853.6600 or visit the One-Stop Employment Center at www.suffolkcountyny.gov/ labor.

Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase your risk for getting an eye disease like cataract or age-related macular degeneration, which is a progressive eye disease leading to blindness. When

purchasing sunglasses, look for those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. These steps can help keep your eyes healthy and prevent vision loss and blindness from eye disease. For more information, visit www.nei.nih.gov/hvm.

Heading to LI Championship The FIRST® Tech Challenge season – dubbed FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented by Qualcomm) – will culminate this weekend with the SBPLI Long Island Championship tournament. Presented locally by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), FIRST® Tech Challenge inspires students age 12 to 18 to pursue an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Twenty-four teams (noted below) from across Long Island will compete in the event at Smithtown High School West on Sunday, February 11th. The participating teams earned the opportunity to compete during one of five regional qualifying tournaments that took place at Lynbrook, Center Moriches and Sewanhaka High Schools throughout the month of January. Working alongside adult mentors, more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries have spent the last several months

designing, building, programming and operating robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season, FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world were asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponent-colored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots on “balancing stones.” During the FIRST Tech Challenge events, students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. Teams work to score points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks, during 150 seconds of game play, which includes autonomous and drivercontrolled periods. Three teams from the FIRST Long Island Championship will

go on to the SuperRegional Championship Tournament “East” in Scranton, Pennsylvania, March 16th-18th, 2018. Teams at the SuperRegional will compete for the opportunity to advance to the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship in Detroit, April 25th-28th, 2018. “One hundred fifteen local teams competed at regional tournaments this season for an opportunity to participate in the SBPLI Long Island Championship,” says Janet Anderson, Program Director and SBPLI/FIRST Long Island representative. “FIRST Tech Challenge has grown into a powerful program for students across Long Island, and we are excited to see which teams will continue on to the SuperRegional in Scranton as representatives of Long Island’s STEM talent.” For more information on SBPLI or FIRST Tech Challenge, please visit www.sbpli-lifirst.org.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the county will be supporting the recruiting efforts of Ridgewells, one of the vendors for the U.S. Open Golf Championship, to fill over 550 temporary food service and hospitality jobs at the 118th U.S. Open Championship. To complement its recruiting efforts, the company will be working with St. Joseph’s College through the college’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program as another avenue to generate additional interest. “The ultimate test in golf is returning to Suffolk County, Long Island,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I encourage anyone who is interested in seeking a temporary job or looking to take advantage of the historic experience to apply online as we look this make this another memorable event.” In partnership with the

Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them. The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and in-

home support services. Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities. The Eldercare Locator also has free informational brochures for older adults and caregivers on topics such as medication management, preventing falls in the home, transportation options, avoiding financial exploitation, and brain health. All brochures can be ordered by calling 800677-1116 or downloaded online at www.eldercare. gov. If you are a caregiver who is seeking information about caring for your loved one and you want to

learn about community resources that may be able to assist, call the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 or visit www.eldercare.gov. The Eldercare Locator is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.
