Breast Cancer Survivors Sought For Hotline Training Begins February 8

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks women and men who have had breast cancer to become hotline volunteers. The four-session takes place on consecutive Tuesdays — February 8th, 15th, 22nd and March 1st –f rom 10 am to 1 pm on zoom.

This in-depth training

includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Attendance at all four sessions is required.

For 42 years, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has been helping women and men who are

diagnosed with breast cancer. The hotline – 800877-8077—is staffed with trained volunteers—those who have survived breast cancer and now help others.

LEGISLATOR FLOTTERON HONORS ISLIP TERRACE EAGLE SCOut Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Neel Patel of Troop 327 sponsored by Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Islip Terrace for earning the rank of Eagle Scout in a ceremony held at St. Peter the Apostle Church. Neel demonstrated leadership with his service project by designing and building a bridge across a stream near the Fish Hatchery at Connetquot State Park. He also led a group of Scouts and adults to replace a railing along a handicap-access fishing platform. He is a graduate of East Islip High School and is currently attending SUNY Clarkson University where he is studying Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. Neel joins his brother Parth as the second Eagle Scout in their family.

Liam Godbout Named HOBY Winner

East Islip High School sophomore Liam Godbout has been named the winner of the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Award, honoring exceptional leadership and community service. He will represent East Islip at this year’s HOBY New York Metro Leadership Seminar conference, to be held in June.

HOBY is an annual leadership seminar open to sophomore students across America, providing more than 12,000 students the opportunity to engage in leadership development activities and seminars around the country.

As in previous years, the cost for East Islip’s winning student to attend the seminar will be covered

by a donation from the Lions Club of the Islips, whose representatives Randy Nissan and Eugene Petraitis visited the school to present Godbout with a check and their congratulations.

East Islip’s band, chorus and orchestra musicians took the stage last month for the first time since December 2019, as East Islip High School, East Islip Middle School, John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School all

presented spectacular inperson winter concerts in front of the proud school community.

“What an amazing winter concert series this was,” said Dr. Robert Wottawa II, East Islip’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages. “Our teachers

challenged our students with authentic repertoire and made this season of giving filled with beautiful music. Our community and parents were very supportive and gave standing ovations to our hard-working musicians.”

First grade students in Justin Lollo’s class at Wing Elementary School in the Islip School District took a bite out of hunger this holiday season by making 184 bologna sandwiches for Bethany House, a shelter in Bay Shore. Mr. Lollo has been hosting the community service project since 2018, and he happily reported that the students broke the old record by

making 47 additional sandwiches this year.

In addition to learning their core subjects, the first graders discussed and learned that there are people in the community who are struggling. “I want my students to realize that there are people who are less fortunate than we are, and they might find it difficult having enough money to obtain food,

Post 9/11 Veterans To Be Recognized For Their Service

Local not-for-profit organization, Heroes Among Us joins with the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County and local Veterans of Foreign Wars groups, and the Nassau County Executive’s office to build a monument in Eisenhower Park to honor all post 9/11 servicemen and women. The monument will join other memorials in Veterans Memorial Park which honor veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans Monument will be the only monument of its kind on Long Island and one of the first in New York State honoring the courage, dedication, and bravery of United States servicemen and women who fought in military conflicts after 9/11.

Over this twenty-year period, 7,000 servicemen and women died in battle and 30,000 post 9/11 veterans have died by suicide. The monument will provide a permanent reminder of their service and provide a much-needed sanctuary and

reflection space for veterans along with their families.

“We are excited to have the assistance from our community to properly respect and honor our veterans in building this monument, which we feel was overdue,” said Virginia Cervasio, founder of Heroes Among Us. The estimated cost to build the monument is $150,000 and all the groups involved are currently working to raise the needed funds.
