Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! Thanks to the conscientious students and staff of John F. Kennedy’s Intermediate School, needy families in the Deer Park School District will enjoy a full Thanksgiving dinner as a result of the school’s annual holiday food drive. “JFK sponsors the food drive each year in an effort to make the Thanksgiving

holiday a special and memorable time for all our students,” explained school social worker Carol Miller-Douglas. “Our goal is to acquire all of the traditional trimmings to put together wonderful Thanksgiving baskets.” Each class at JFK is responsible for collecting a specific nonperishable item or canned good.

This year, the students collected more than 18 milk crates full of donated food items, supplemented by a donation from the local Girl Scout troop. The baskets were then organized by MillerDouglas and three of JFK’s teaching assistants, Kathy Layden, Anna Marino and Suzanne Wright. “They always stay after school and help put the baskets together for the families each year,” said MillerDouglas. “Without them, I would not be able to do my job so well.” The finished baskets full of Thanksgiving cheer were donated to 10 JFK families in need. Throughout my whole life, my parents have pushed me to try for the most elite colleges. In their minds, to be successful, you need to study at the top level. They are concerned mainly with the prestige level of my prospective school. Surely, prestige is not the deciding factor in what I hope will be a very successful career. Perhaps a less recognized school will afford me the same kind of education, in an environment where I will thrive. The vast majority of prestigious schools maintain a focus on graduate education. This

means less one-on-one learning with a professor. If I choose to attend a smaller school, I may have the opportunity to learn more efficiently. On the other hand, the brand recognition associated with my parents’ choices will undoubtably carry weight, and take me far in life. With just a few days until I hear back from colleges with an acceptance or denial, it is time to make a decision. Do I go to a school that will make me happy? Do I go to a school that will make my parents happy? It is undoubtably the biggest decision I will have had to make in my seventeen years of life.

I cannot infer how happy I will be at a college. I don’t even know what I want to do with my life yet. As of right now, I want to become a journalist, but last month I wanted to be a chef! I don’t know how my life will play out, so there are no guarantees. Surely, a degree is nothing; it is what you do in those four years and beyond that count. There is no stress for me anymore, as I am done with the application process. The ball is in their court now. I can only hope I choose the school that is right for me.

Food Drive Fundraisers Students in Deer Park High School and Robert Frost Middle School collected hundreds of nonperishable food items in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, reinforcing their spirit of community service and aiding needy families throughout the

Deer Park School District. The high school’s annual food drive began with students collecting food through the Student Council and their classes, bringing in a variety of items that together will provide meals for the holidays. Class advisers

then collected food in front of area supermarkets on successive weekends, followed by a homeroom food drive competition in which the winner brought in over 100 items alone. Student Council members then gathered to sort and pack the food, directed

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is inviting high school-aged orchestral musicians and choral singers to audition for the July 8th through 21st, 2014 performance tour of The People’s Republic of China. The two-week tour will include performances and visits to Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Yangshuo, Guilin and Shanghai. The tour will also explore major attractions such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Terracotta Warrior Museum, and the Giant Panda Research Base.
