ZombieWorld Raises Funds

abylon Town Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently visited the Deer Park Community Center’s haunted house attraction known as “ZombieWorld” to thank the staff for their work raising funds for the center and local youth programs. The 7,000 square-foot haunted house takes approximately fifteen minutes for guests to walk through and features over forty live actors, including students from the area.

The courses average from 2.5 to 7.5 miles in length and may include surfaces of grass and earth, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills, flat ground and sometimes gravel road. The benefits of Cross Country are both mental and physical. Cross Country training builds versatility and stamina, with experience running over
a wide range of speeds and terrains. Saints Cyril and Methodius has participated in CMSAA programs for over five years and this year’s Cross Country Track Team includes 16 upper grade boys and girls, whose practices and meets take them to a diverse range of Long Island terrains and parks, such as Belmont Lake State Park, Sunken Meadow, and Heckscher Park, to name a few. At the heart of the CMSAA’s Mission Statement is their role in helping develop well-rounded athletes, so the program’s volunteer coaches seek to promote physical endurance and good sportsmanship, while fostering teamwork and Catholic values in all of their players. Weddings For Warriors The United States Marines Corps and Dream Event Planning announced the launch of the new L.I. Weddings for Warriors program at the Coral House in Baldwin. The program will assist those in the armed services with making special arrangements for displaced couples while a service man or woman is overseas in places like Afghanistan. They will volunteer on Long Island bases, or other military facilities, in preparing weddings and vow renewals. “Unfortunately, because of deployments, you do not always know when duty will call. Couples may be pulled from one another with little time to plan an entire wedding. We want to thank the brave men and women that fight tirelessly to keep us safe and give them a dream wedding,” said Adam
Panetta, Executive Vice President, Dream Event Planning. The Weddings for Warriors project was started in 2009 in Savannah, Georgia by the Savannah Wedding Tourism Council. The event provided wedding ceremonies and vow renewals to active US Military personnel. According to the Weddings for Warriors website, “The project was conceived as a way of saying a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to active duty military personnel in Savannah and the Low Country,” said Becky Byous, Executive Director for the Project. The Long Island Weddings for Warriors program will closely mirror that of the Savannah, GA program with events being held at the Coral House in Baldwin.
Growing Up A few years ago, when I turned sixteen, I was overcome with the idea that I needed to purchase my own first car. It was a pride thing. My dad bought his first car, and I wanted to buy mine. A few months after that realization, I did. I still own the Jeep that I bought with my own money. Now, a year and a half later, my brother is in the exact same situation. He’s been working alongside me on Fire Island, and now, at sixteen years old, he’s got the itch to buy his own car. It’s unbelievable that my little brother, the same kid who I used to beat in video games and play with outside, is growing up. He is no longer that little guy excited to see me after school lets out. Now that I’m at college, he’s the only kid in the house. I think it has really pushed him to grow up and make the right choices. Instead of people
grouping us together like they used to, my brother is free to make his own decisions now, and be the person he wants to be. I miss him a lot while I’m away. I used to see him the majority of every day. Now, I’m lucky to see him once a month. My parents think this transition has been the hardest on them, but the long-distance bond between my brother is the hardest thing thing I’ve had to get used to. My brother talks about going to Villanova just like me and getting a Jeep just like me, but I want him to be his own person. Now that he is maturing and looking to build his own persona, I want him to remember the fun times we had as little kids - before we had to worry about grown up things, or the distance between us.

The Perfect Dress By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing? Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you... I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,
well, let’s just say that window closes most of the way before I can motivate myself to venture out. Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination. Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So
after riding the escalator up and down and making the rounds of each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable. Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on. Falcon’s Nest Reopens A revamped edition of Deer Park High School’s school store, the Falcon’s Nest, recently reopened to rapturous reception by students and staff alike. The store is open during all lunch periods at the school, and for the first time, during 10th period as well. During the day, the store offers spirit wear and accessories such as hoodies, lanyards and bucket hats, with new items being added weekly. Other popular products include school, phone and tech supplies, materials for seniors to construct their homecoming crowns and necessary daily items like tissues, hand sanitizer and
batteries. Students manning the Nest are encouraged to conduct research on any items they wish to sell and bring it to the attention of store manager Sandy Stueber. “As long as the item is appropriate to sell in school, we place the order and go from there,” explained Stueber. “I’m trying to have the students select the items we sell. This way, we are successful.” After school, the Falcon’s Nest morphs into a top snack destination offering drinks, protein bars and even freshly delivered pizza. “Students who stay after
school for athletics or club activities are always looking for something to eat or drink,” said Stueber. “I have been working with the athletes to make sure they have access to what they want and need.” Stueber is also working to eventually incorporate the school’s life skills students during the day. “We plan to partner each life skills student with a senior, and they will work together to do inventory, deliver beverages or materials to teachers, or even prepare fruit for us to sell in the store,” she said. “We are very excited with FALCON’S NEST REOPENS - Deer Park High School sophomore John Galaor the potential.” mans the Falcon’s Nest school store under the guidance of manager Sandy Stueber. District Celebrates Homecoming Hundreds of marchers and spectators filled the streets for Deer Park High School’s homecoming parade on October 25th. Upbeat marching band performances, colorful class floats and peppy
cheerleader and kickline numbers continued throughout the parade route on Deer Park Avenue and Nicolls Road. “This is the one day people look forward to way in advance,” said Athletic
Director Dominick Fontana. “It’s a nice venue to celebrate Deer Park.” Principal James Cummings kicked off the homecoming ceremony, announcing local politicians and dignitaries
that were in attendance, as well as honoring the Downey family of Deer Park for their continuous donations and involvement in district scholarships. Serving as grand marshal was Rosalie Downey, the
widow of FDNY Deputy Chief of Special Operations Ray Downey, a hero of 9/11. The ceremony also included a performance by the high school’s women’s choir. “Our kids are the best,”
