Youth Advisor Of The Year Deer Park High School student Timothy Getchius was recently honored by the Deer Park School District for his tireless volunteer work with the Self-Advocacy Association of New York, having been named the 2013 Youth Advisor of the Year by the nonprofit organization, which is run by and for people with developmental disabilities.

“Disabled persons come to us, and we try and help them so each and every one knows what self-advocacy is,” explained Getchius. “We make them feel like family.” Getchius, 17, earlier participated in the annual SANYS statewide conference, “SelfAdvocacy: Leading the Transformation,” along with more than 500

attendees including representatives from local agencies, state government and school districts. “This is a great honor for Deer Park,” said Frank Caliguiri, the district’s assistant superintendent for pupil personnel services. “Timothy is a fine young man and we are proud of his achievement.”

Top Ten Honored

Recognizing exceptional academic achievement, Deer Park High School’s recent Top 10 Breakfast honored the 10 seniors with the highest grade point averages among this year’s graduating class. The special annual ceremony also served to announce the valedictorian and salutatorian. Kyle Devine, ranked first with the highest GPA, was announced as valedictorian of the Class of 2014. “We will be hearing about Kyle for years to come,” Deer Park guidance counselor

Jessica Gordon said of the star student during the ceremony. Ranking second was future salutatorian Andreas Stamatakis. The other students in the top 10 were Yasameen Saleem ranked third, Nasratullah Sultany fourth, Victoria Trovato fifth, Richard Jacullo sixth, Christina Catanzaro seventh, Daniela Zabbatino eighth, Nicholas Vitale ninth and Ebne Rafi 10th. “As principal, I’d like to congratulate all 10 of you, and thank you and your

families for making this a better school,” Principal James Cummings told the assembled seniors. “You’re here because of your grades, but thank you also for what you do outside the classroom, which is where you make your mark. I wish you all the best and can’t wait to hear what you accomplish in the future.” The ceremony, held in the school’s library, included a celebratory breakfast for these high-achieving Deer Park students and their families.

Stony Brook University is one of six recipients of a $5 million grant from the Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop tools that will change the way STEM students are assessed. The five-year grant, which will help catalyze the national movement to better test and evaluate the knowledge, abilities, performance and competence of STEM students, is one of the largest science education grants ever awarded. “At large universities, the typical ways that student learning is measured is through multiple choice tests,” said Dr. Ross Nehm, associate professor of Ecology and Evolution and member of the Center for Science and Mathematics Education

(CESAME) and Principal Investigator on the project. “But, while they are the easiest for students to prepare for, multiple-choice assessments do not match the types of performances and skills that we expect them to be able to master in the real world. Because students tend to learn and study for the types of tests that they’re given, they aren’t well-prepared for the increasing global competition for skilled workers.” While many students may be able to access and know large amounts of information, they may nevertheless be limited in their ability to organize and express such understanding in a clear, logical and persuasive manner. The grant will allow Stony Brook researchers such as Dr. Nehm to expand the development of innovative

assessment tools for large undergraduate STEM classes. Also on the research team is Dr. Minsu Ha, Stony Brook’s first science education postdoctoral researcher and an expert in machinelearning methods in educational assessment and assessment design and evaluation. “Drs. Nehm and Ha are exactly the individuals we want to bring to Stony Brook in our quest for international leadership in science education,” stated David Bynum, founder of CESAME. “The NSF grant is one that will propel Stony Brook to the top of the mountain as a powerhouse of STEM education.” Along with Stony Brook, five other universities were recipients of the grant: Michigan State University, University of Colorado, University of Georgia, Western

7

Stony Brook Shares In Grant Michigan University and the University of Maine. The grant builds on an earlier partnership between these institutions to develop automated scoring systems that allow students to practice their written explanations, arguments and communicative skills. “This is the first time that research on such a large scale has been brought into undergraduate science, technology and math education,” said Dr. Nehm, who is PI on two additional NSF projects focusing on science education research. Perserverance In the realm of ideas, everything depends on enthusiasm; in the real world, all rests on perseverance. As my quest to find the perfect college is in full swing, my brother is becoming exposed to the game that we call college admissions. My brother, your typical sixteen yearold, is good in school, plays a sport and is well rounded. He is excited about the idea of selecting the school of his dreams, but lost as to where to start. Thankfully, his big brother is moderately well-versed in the art of the “College Application Process.” In my few years of college research, I have learned that, in order to be a candidate who admissions officers salivate over, a student shouldn’t necessarily be good in

several things, but excel in one thing. As decades have passed, colleges no longer look for the wellrounded student, but for the well-rounded class. This means that every college needs a class full of athletes, academic giants and leaders, among various other classifications. Gone are the days where the jack-of-all-trades student could virtually assure him/herself of acceptance anywhere. Now, the student that is well versed in one particular trade is arguably more appealing to an admissions officer. In addition to excelling in a particular field, a student can benefit from a “legacy situation.” This jargon

is another way of saying that, if a parent attended a specific college, you have a hook. My parents went to SUNY Oneonta, so if I applied there, theoretically, I would have the edge over an identical candidate with parental ties to SUNY Oswego. This link is beneficial to a college in an unexpected way. A long line of graduates with your last name opens up the door for big donations. Although I am just a senior with very basic knowledge of the college admissions process, I should be able to guide my little brother through what was arguably the most stressful segment of my life thus far.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am what I suppose you would classify as “slightly” obsessed with photography. Everywhere I travel, whether for the first time or the fiftieth, I am constantly on the lookout for interesting angles, landscapes, candid shots… anything that happens to catch my eye. There is something about preserving the moment that has always appealed to my sense of historical appreciation – because, after all, the second a moment has passed, it is, theoretically, history. This is not to say that every one of the thousands of photos in my digital archive would necessarily qualify as “art” or even as particularly significant to anyone but me. They are just part of the vast collection of snippets from my life, of those close to me, of the places I have been, the

events I have attended – all easily accessible whenever I, or anyone else, is in the mood for a little trip down memory lane. One would think, with such an interest in the art of photography, that I might invest in a “real” camera at some point, rather than relying solely on the somewhat questionable quality of my digital smartphone, portable and convenient as it is. And while, yes, an assortment of lenses and tools would certainly improve the technical quality, there is definitely something to be said for being able to instantly capture the scene before you. With the recent influx of social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram, there seems to be a newfound obsession with instantly sharing every photo taken, especially among those of the younger generation. While I can appreciate a good photo as much as the next person, there is

such a thing as overkill. Case in point: I recently traveled to Ireland over the summer on what was my first “real” trip – on a plane, overseas, to a land full of countless photo ops. I took what amounted (after many retakes and deletions) to about 800 photos over the course of eight days. Had I taken a cue from the masses out on Facebook, all 800 of those pictures would have been instantly uploaded the second my feet touched American soil. Instead, I managed to narrow it down to maybe a dozen of my favorites. I’m sure all my social media “friends” and “followers” thank me for that. Photography will always be something of a passion for me. And why not? Someday, all those seemingly meaningless photos will be quite significant. Better to capture those moments now.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Long Island Chapter (AFPLI) is pleased to announce that Karen and Frank Boulton, residents of Brightwaters, will be honored as recipients of the Horace Hagedorn Outstanding Philanthropist Award at Philanthropy Day 2013. This award recognizes an individual or family whose generosity inspires others to give and make a difference in the Long Island community by actively advancing philanthropy. Karen and Frank Boulton’s accomplishments will be celebrated at Philanthropy Day 2013’s Awards Luncheon being held on Friday, November 15th at the Huntington Hilton, 598 Broad Hollow Road in Melville. Driven by a sense of gratitude, hard work and dedication, Karen and Frank Boulton exemplify the spirit of the Horace Hagedorn Outstanding Philanthropist Award. The Boulton’s involvement with the YMCA of Long

Island and the Great South Bay YMCA in Bay Shore was a large part of the rebirth of Bay Shore’s downtown community. Mr. Boulton served as Chairman of the Board of Managers for nearly ten years, and chaired the Capital Campaign that raised $6.2 million to build the YMCA. Among many other endeavors, Karen lent her expertise to help guide the Y staff through the certification process for the early childhood program. The Boulton’s donated the Regent Theater to the YMCA, which became the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts. As founder and CEO of the Long Island Ducks, Frank chairs the team’s charitable arm, The QuackerJack Foundation, which works with more than 800 Long Island not-for-profits. They raise money for the fight against breast cancer, support Ride for Life to raise money to fight ALS, and support many other organizations. Mr. Boulton is a graduate of Villanova University,

which he credits for his success and for shaping his perspective on philanthropy. A member of the President’s Leadership Council of Villanova University, his continuing support and generosity was recognized in 2012 with the presentation of the St. Thomas of Villanova Alumni Medal, the highest honor awarded to alumni. Other honorees to be recognized at Philanthropy Day are: Marge Rogatz, Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer; Marcie Rosenberg, Outstanding Fundraising Executive; Farrell Fritz, P.C., Outstanding Corporation; Dave Widmer, The Gilbert Tilles Award and Brooke Di Palma, Leaders of Tomorrow. “We are proud to celebrate this year’s Philanthropy Day honorees, for the amazing work that they do and the important message they send to all of us: whether it takes place on a grand scale of multi-million dollar gifts or as a simple act of kindness to a person in need, philanthropy is a

15

Philanthropy Day 2013 guiding principal of our Long Island community,” said Meredith Celentano, Philanthropy Day Chair and Assistant Vice President for Development and Alumni Affairs at Hofstra University. Philanthropy Day is celebrated in November in cities across America. Fundraising professionals, board members, business leaders, community activists and individuals gather for professional development and to honor their leaders. Long Island’s Philanthropy Day is one of the largest one-day fundraising conferences in the country and regularly attracts more than 700 attendees and 60 exhibitors, with the highlight of the day being the Awards Luncheon. Bank of America is the Presenting Partner for Philanthropy Day 2013. For information on exhibits, sponsorships and journal ads, contact Joan Connor at 631.249.5008 or by e-mail at info@afpli. org. Biking For A Cause Two Eastern Suffolk BOCES employees are fighting lung disease with the help of their bicycles. Patricia Brandt and Marie Rose, cycling enthusiasts, recently pedaled more than 100 miles over two days to raise money for the American Lung Association during its Autumn Bike Trek, which took place September 28th-29th in Massachusetts. Brandt and Rose, along with the other participants, rode from Sandwich, MA, to Provincetown, which is

located at the tip of Cape Cod. All told, the trip was 105 miles. This is not the first cause Rose has championed with the use of her bicycle. Last year, she rode from New York City to Washington, D.C., over the course of five days when she participated in Climate Ride, a cause that raises awareness for renewable energies and a green economy. Between the two of them, the friends have lost three of their four parents to lung disease, which

made their commitment to this venture especially poignant. Said Rose, “Patricia and I had to raise no less than $500 each to take part in this trek. It meant a lot to us both to be able to contribute to the efforts of such a worthy organization as the American Lung Association.” Brandt agreed. “Too many lives are lost each year to lung disease and we would really like to see that change.”
