tudents at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School walked into their gym to find that it had been transformed into something spectacularly different, thanks to the Sky Dome, a portable, inflatable planetarium. The students, ranging from kindergarten through second grade, and their teachers climbed through a tunnel and entered the dome. They closed their eyes, then opened them to a “star-filled” sky.

I’m sorry, this seat is taken. We’ve all done it. In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to

Excellence Earns Induction With candlelit ceremony, the Deer Park High School World Language Honor Society chapter inducted 43 new members on April 23rd into the Societe Honoraire de Francais, Societa Onoraria Italia and Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica. Father Vincent, Deacon Phil and Sister Susan held a prayer service with all students on the lawn and planted a Bradford Pear Tree,
donated with kindness by Lou Vincennie of East End Trees in Kings Park. Part of the closing thoughts during SSCM’s prayer service was thanking God for the gift of one another, saying, “We are human and often fail in our dealings with each other, but we pray that you will give us the wisdom to love our neighbors around the world. Help us to tear down walls we have built in our hearts and minds through fear and prejudice. Let our eyes see the person inside….” Respect for Earth, respect

As my first year of college winds down, I’ve found myself increasingly curious as to the value of the education I am receiving. I’ve been bombarded with thoughts that college might not be all that it is made out to be. Perhaps, the entire idea of higher education is just instituted in order for us to buy a degree. Now, I realize that all of those thoughts are false. The sole purpose of college isn’t to learn. We pay all this money for the experience. Class and the acquisition of knowledge are really only a part of the equation. Throughout my first year, I’ve formed so many memories and countless friendships. I now realize that my parents pay all this money for me to enjoy my time here. After all, they say the college years are the best
years of your life. Looking back, I spent way too much time in the library. I should have been more focused on fun stuff and taking advantage of the opportunities that I have been afforded. Sure, a GPA is important, but it isn’t everything. After graduation, I want to look back on my time at Villanova and be happy with the legacy I leave. There is only a limited amount we can learn in the classroom. The rest of the supplemental learning comes from experiences. I think that my experiences at Villanova have made me a better person, and ultimately a more whole individual. Moving forward, I hope to instill this idea in my little brother. Sometimes, it is better to enjoy the moment than prepare for the future.

Serenaded by music from the high school’s string ensemble, students and their parents gathered in the school’s library for a celebratory breakfast and recognition ceremony on April 23. Twice per school year, the high school’s 15 departments select students as champions alongside three additional champions chosen by principals and a teacher. Mock Press Conference Six Deer Park High School journalism students and Associate Principal Brian Norton recently attended a mock press conference with state assemblymen Chad A. Lupinacci and Andrew P. Raia, held at the South Huntington Public Library. The students had the opportunity to use their

I strongly encourage all residents to do their part to help reduce litter in our area as we continue to keep Babylon beautiful.” A kick-off breakfast was held at Town Hall in Lindenhurst, where volunteers consisting of Town employees and officials, PSEG employees, students from Deer Park High School and Suffolk Community College, representatives from local
7-11 establishments, and various community organizations were grouped into teams and assigned areas throughout the Town, including along Montauk Highway, Straight Path, New Highway, and Ketcham’s Creek. Following the clean-up, volunteers were treated to a barbeque lunch donated by Outback Steakhouse. All garbage collected was weighed by the Town’s Department of Public Works and at the end of the day, over 12,000 pounds, or 6 tons, of litter was removed from ten sites throughout the Town. The anti-litter campaign is a component of the Town of Babylon’s Beautification Program, which organizes numerous initiatives including Adopt-aHighway, Adopt-a-Spot, and Global Youth Service Day.
Stamping Out Hunger Saturday, May 9th, marks the 23rd anniversary of America’s largestsingle day of giving - the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, Feeding America, United Way and other partners. Currently, 49 million Americans - 1 in 6 - are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Sixteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. And nearly 5 million seniors over age 60 are food
insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes often too embarrassed to ask for help. In 2014, over 72 million pounds of food was collected by Postal carriers nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people. Over the course of the 22-year history, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food. The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime,

Jewelry Brings Joy
Teachers at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School spearheaded a collection drive that gifted costume jewelry to brighten the spirits of local cancer patients. The spark for the project came last year, when Spanish teacher Meredith Telese was driving past Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Commack, and began thinking of a way to spread happiness to those in need.
“I brainstormed a few ideas, and decided that collecting jewelry, attaching a poem to it, and delivering it to the patients at Sloan would be perfect,” said Telese. “That way, those who received chemotherapy treatments could leave the center with a new piece of jewelry to make them feel happy and beautiful.” Telese was joined on the project by fellow teacher and friend Christy
Freire, assisting in the collection and distribution process. The two met in January and sent out emails to their colleagues, requesting donations to be placed in baskets. Within a few days, the two teachers received hundreds of beautiful pieces, which they individually wrapped before recently delivering to Sloan Kettering, the Stony Brook Cancer Center and other local facilities.

On Friday, April 24th, over 200 volunteers dispersed throughout Babylon to take part in the Town’s campaign to clean roadways and public spaces of litter in a celebration of community pride, collecting 12,290 pounds of garbage (or the weight of a full grown elephant). This anti-litter campaign coordinated by Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Beautification Director Florence Findley and Assistant Deputy County Executive Tim Sini, all of whom were concerned about unsightly refuse appearing in the community. Students at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School walked into their gym on April 14th to find that it had been transformed into something spectacularly different, thanks to the Sky Dome, a portable, inflatable planetarium. The students, ranging from kindergarten through second grade, and their teachers climbed through a tunnel and entered the dome. Once they were all seated, they closed our eyes, then opened them to the sight of a “starfilled” sky, eliciting excited “oohs” and “aahs” from the children. The Sky Dome’s navigator introduced the students to the planets and some of their moons,
explaining interesting facts about the planets as they visited each one. The students were then guided through the stars of the Northern Hemisphere and learned how to identify some of them in the night sky, along with their respective Greek mythological characters. “This in-school virtual field trip allowed the students to get an up-close and personal tour of our solar system,” said teacher Dana Grafstein. “The presentations were geared toward each grade level and ended with a memorable meteor shower where the students made wishes on the shooting stars.”
