On Sunday, March 2nd, the 4th Annual Elizabeth Durante Memorial Pancake Breakfast will be held, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the West Islip Fire Department, located on Union Boulevard in West Islip. All proceeds will benefit the Elizabeth Durante Medical Clinic and Orphanage in a remote part of Uganda. There

will be raffles, a Chinese Auction, a 50/50 and more. There will also be free tours for children of the firehouse and the trucks. The Clinic provides free healthcare and surgery for women and children who otherwise would have no access to these medical services. The Orphanage supplies housing to 300 children. Elizabeth Durante was

on her way to Uganda in March of 2009 when she was tragically killed by a drunk driver. Her parents, Dr. Keith and his wife Kathy, have carried on the mission of the Clinic and Orphanage in Elizabeth’s memory. Please support this worthwhile cause by attending the Pancake Breakfast or making a donation.

in sixth place. “It was a great day, and it was really nice to see all of our team members trying their best and having a good time applying their scientific knowledge and skills,” said Science Olympiad adviser David Knuffke. “I’m very proud of everyone on the team.” Continuing their quest for science excellence, four Deer Park students – David Golann, Ian Murray, Nicole-Ann Pagan and John Pawelko – will compete in the Stony Brook University Protein Modeling Challenge on February 28th. In the competition, hosted by Stony Brook’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education, the team will display their model of a Ras protein, constructed prior to the event. They will then compete on-site to build another protein model and take an exam about protein structure and function.

Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Better crawl out of that winter state of hibernation and greet the brand new season right around the corner… it’s just over the horizon, past the potholes.

with Diabetes Series is a perfect example of the innovative programming offered through the Diabetes Education Center,” said Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, RN, BC-ADM, CDE, FAADE, Executive Director of Winthrop’s Diabetes and Obesity Institute and Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook School of Medicine. “Many people are overwhelmed by the menu choices in restaurants and feel guilty about their food choices. Dining in restaurants, whether casual or elegant, provides a wonderful opportunity for socialization. Patients who have participated in the Winthrop Dining Out with Diabetes program feel empowered and learn strategies for restaurant dining and food preparation without sacrificing diabetes selfmanagement goals. What a marvelous environment to celebrate the Diabetes Education Center’s legacy of service!” Since opening its doors in 1979, the Diabetes Education Center has helped improve the lives of countless individuals living with diabetes through its highly regarded educational and support programs. A pioneer in the field of diabetes education, the Diabetes Education Center was the first outpatient education program in New York State accredited by the national American Diabetes Association. Today, the Center continues to equip adults and children with the knowledge and tools necessary to manage diabetes as well as provides lifestyle programs designed to prevent diabetes. For additional information about these events, please call Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center at 516.663.2350.

Cablevision is seeking high school students to participate in the Smithsonian Channel’s Make Your Mark contest, an opportunity to win money for a school or community project. In honor of Black History Month, students can submit a video idea, or mark, that will leave a lasting impression on their community or school. The Smithsonian Channel project grows out of the documentary Breath of Freedom, which tells the story of African-American soldiers who returned from World War II and made their mark by taking up the civil rights struggle in the United States. Students are invited to watch the documentary and then record a video that showcases an idea on how a school or community could benefit from the winning $2,500 entry.

NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY - Red was the color of the day on Friday, February 7th, as St. Charles Hospital employees participated in the American Heart Association’s (AHA) National Wear Red Day. The AHA designates the first Friday of each February as Wear Red Day, to bring attention to and create awareness about the number one killer of women, heart disease. This year marks 11 years since the AHA has taken a stand against heart disease in women and the 11th year that St. Charles employees have demonstrated their support of the cause by wearing red to work.

Amanda Koscik, public relations officer, placed first in the Prose category, while teammates President Jacqueline Pusey placed fifth and Treasurer Amanda Yodice, fourth; Secretary Nicholas Krauss - in his first forensics tournament - drew third, and Faseeha Naeem, secured the top spot, and a first place trophy. Krauss and Naeem will compete at the national championship in the Persuasive category. Jaqueline Pusey is making a repeat appearance at the

national championships, this time in the Persuasive category after appearing last fall in the Dramatic Interpretation slot. Assistant Professor of Communications and Faculty Advisor Christopher Holfester said, the Michael J. Grant Campus Speech and Debate Team has won three national championships and twice won the New York State Championship since 1999 and former team members are now college professors and attorneys. The team will compete again on February 22nd and 23rd, at the Emerson/Lafayette Swing at Emerson College in Boston.

Giving From The Heart

On February 16th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its 1st Annual Give From The Heart Athletes for Alzheimer’s event at Steel Fitness Gym in Bellmore. The event raised over $5,000 for its programs that help those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers. Approximately 100 people participated in a daylong contest to determine who could perform the most sit-ups or push-ups in a given period of time. Dear Little Dollies,

a unique doll collectors shop in Bellmore, was the presenting sponsor for the event. Other groups and organizations in attendance included Molloy College, Kellenberg High School, and Nancy Burner & Associates. Volunteer coaches and Steel Fitness Gym trainers observed participants throughout the competition to ensure that the sit-ups and pushups were completed correctly and counted accurately. The competition was dedicated to the late Dorothy C. Camilleri, a

Bellmore resident who battled Alzheimer’s Disease for several years. Her husband, Louis, who is 89 years old, got out of his wheelchair and did one situp in honor of his late wife. All of the participants will continue to raise funds until June 30th in the hopes of reaching the target goal of $25,000. For more information on the event, please visit www. adrcinc.org or contact Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO at 631.820.8068.
