It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete

All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. Prevention Program Available Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken invite residents who are at risk for developing type-2 diabetes to participate, free of charge, in the countyadministered National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). The program supports moderate behavioral changes and has proven to reduce risk in those who are at risk for type 2 diabetes. DPP is based on a research

study led by the National Institutes of Health. The study showed that with intensive counseling and motivational support, participants were able to make behavioral changes, reducing their risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes by 58 percent. Lifestyle changes worked particularly well for participants aged 60 and older, reducing their risk by 71 percent. “We seek to reverse in Suffolk County the nationwide trend toward increased rates of diabetes.

This program addresses the behaviors that contribute to diabetes, a disease that exacts enormous costs to the individual, the family and the community,” said Executive Bellone, who rolled out “Healthy Suffolk” last year. “Diabetes puts people at risk for many serious health conditions,” said Dr. Tomarken. “The good news is that moderate changes in lifestyle can help restore blood sugar toward normal levels and result in significant health benefits,” said Dr.

Icy Water Rescue Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Town Clerk Carol Quirk, and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to honor three members of the community for their heroic acts that helped save a 12 year-old boy who fell into an icy Babylon canal. Seven year-old Finn Chatterton heard a screaming sound and

immediately alerted his father, Patrick. The two found the boy in the icy water, extended a shovel for him to grasp, and called the police. When Suffolk County First Precinct Officer Kristen Derkevics arrived, the three were able to pull the boy safely out of the water. Officer Derkevics, Patrick and Finn Chatterton were each presented with the Town of Babylon Heroism

Award – the highest honor bestowed to residents by the Town. Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey was also in attendance to present a proclamation honoring the three heroes, as well as recognition on behalf of Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. The officials commended the three for their brave actions and thanked them for their service to the Town.

Free Throw Championship The Knights of Columbus of the 8th New York District recently held the District’s annual Free Throw Basketball Championship. The event was held in the gymnasium at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Parish

in Deer Park on Saturday, February 6th at 9:30 a.m. Boys and Girls between the ages of 9 through 14 who were winners at their council levels competed against each other. The participating councils were Our Lady of

the Rosary Council #4428 in Deer Park and Our Lady of Grace Council #11968 in West Babylon. The eleven (11) winners, 5 girls and 6 boys, will be advancing to the Suffolk County Championship on March 5th.

Student Actors Shine

For this year’s diverting winter play, the dedicated thespians at Deer Park High School presented Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite” at two performances from January 15th-16th. As in the original Broadway production of Simon’s Tony-winning 1968 comedy play, “Plaza Suite” was presented in three acts – “Visitor from Mamaroneck,” “Visitor

from Hollywood” and “Visitor from Forest Hills” – all taking place in Room 719 at New York City’s Plaza Hotel, although at different times. “This show was unique in that the lead actors in each scene had over 35 pages of lines to memorize, and they did an amazing job,” said James Henry, the director. This was Henry’s fourth time directing the

high school’s winter play, assisted by student director Samantha Colon. “I would have to say that the show was a huge success,” Henry said. “I am really proud of all the students in the production and everything they accomplished in the three months since rehearsals began.”

Throughout Deer Park‘s Saints Cyril and Methodius School, students, teachers and staff got into the spirit of Catholic Schools Week with a variety of activities and celebrations. With key themes of kindness and acts of mercy, SSCM staff planned a funfilled and thought-filled week for all. Seeing the 8th graders engaged and sharing with the Kindergarteners was a treat, as they read books, chatted and shared cookies

and milk, all donned in their PJs for Pajama Day. Likewise, 5th graders shared quality time reading and snacking with the Pre-K class. The little ones enjoy spending this special time with the upper grades whom they so look up to and the older students learn patients, gain perspective and have an opportunity to practice acts of kindness by reading to their young partners and reminiscing on a simpler time.

LENTEN LESSONS - As the start of the Lenten season is upon us, second graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park have been preparing their hearts and minds for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Second grade teacher, Ms. Bravo has been reading and discussing Bible stories and parables regarding the lesson of forgiveness. One that stood out at them was the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus, the Tax Collector. Students harnessed their artistic skills and re-created the scene, with Jesus calling Zacchaeus down from the Sycamore tree, reminding them all that we, too, can ask for forgiveness.

Giving some serious thought to the Catholic Schools Week themes of peace and kindness, fifth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius in Deer Park have partaken in a spiritual journey. The students recited a poem for the school about keeping peace in their

lives, then read several stories about how kindness spreads love and wrote essays on how each of them spreads kindness in their own worlds by their good deeds and service to the school and surrounding community. At an age where kindness is sometimes hard to come

by and in a world in which it is so infrequently covered and so often overlooked, it is key for these tweens to be bringing such messages home to their daily lives and openly discussing the beauty and importance of simple acts of kindness.

The money was donated to the Long Island Cares/ Harry Chapin Food Bank, which has been serving the hungry on Long Island since 1980. King Kullen CoPresident Brian C. Cullen stated, “King Kullen has been a longtime supporter of the Long Island Cares/ Harry Chapin Food Bank. We are pleased to partner with our customers who contributed to ‘Check Out Hunger’ to assist Long Island Cares in its mission to provide emergency food where and when it is needed. Helping those in

need in the communities we serve is a tradition that dates back to my grandfather, Michael J. Cullen, who founded King Kullen in 1930.” In 1997, King Kullen was the first supermarket chain to participate in the annual “Check Out Hunger” campaign, a unique partnership between Long Island Cares and the shopping community in which customers can make a donation with a coupon when checking out at the supermarket register. This year’s campaign ran from October through December 31st, 2015. One hundred percent of all donations go to Long Island Cares. “King Kullen has a long history of making a difference in the fight

against hunger and its customers have always been charitable in supporting our mission,” observed Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank Executive Director Paule T. Pachter. “Together, we continue to help improve the lives of our neighbors on Long Island.
