I applaud Community Housing Innovations and Bed Bath and Beyond for collaborating on the launch of the Fresh Start Program.” Community Housing Innovations, the largest provider of housing for the homeless in suburban New York, has connected with Bed Bath & Beyond to encourage individuals, families and businesses alike to purchase gift cards through the Bed Bath & Beyond special toll-free number; 844-52-I-CARE. One hundred percent of this anonymous, tax-deductible donation will be given to a family or individual currently living in a local shelter in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess and Orange Counties to purchase household items from the retailer. Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we

can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In

the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Someone called the Copiague Fire Department, and they took the passenger to Good Samaritan Medical Center. Upon arrival at the hospital, she informed the ambulance driver that a young man passing by, with glasses, a gray sweatshirt and backpack had pulled her to the sidewalk. The driver of the ambulance recalled seeing Matthew at the scene and recognized him as his neighbor, and contacted him when he got home. Matthew had not mentioned a word of the incident to his parents. This spring, in Boy’s Life “Scouts in Action,” the story of Matthew’s good deed will be printed. As a result of his actions, Matthew was recently honored with the Town of Babylon’s Highest Honor Heroism Award.
