The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. This organization has five service areas: Children & Youth, Family & Community, Senior & Nutrition Services, Vocational Services & Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice Services. Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they assist over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County.

EAC Network runs the New Path Treatment Center, which is an outpatient clinic located in Hempstead. The center offers a recovery process in a safe and full-service treatment program for individuals with substance abuse disorders.

Approximately 22.7 million Americans need treatment for drug or alcohol-related problems, and many will not seek treatment due to the stigma and shame associated with substance use disorders. The New Path Treatment Center is a place where trained and compassionate counselors work tirelessly to assist people in need. They address not only substance use itself, but all of its contributing factors, including mental health, physical health, family systems, socialization, smoking cessation, legal issues and employment. A personal treatment plan is developed for each individual to address their speciﬁc needs.

Sherri Flournoy, Program Director at New Path Treatment Center stated, “In recognizing that recovery

is possible and is a life-long journey, we can help to reduce the stigma of substance use and mental health disorders. Our role at New Path is to assist individuals to achieve and maintain their recovery goals. Our services follow a recovery model whereby participants are encouraged to develop their intrinsic motivation to make healthy lifestyle choices.”

Donnelly Welcomes DPHS Women’s Choir

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently invited and welcomed the Deer Park High School Women’s Choir to perform the National Anthem before the entire Legislature in Hauppauge. The singing of the national anthem, along with the pledge of allegiance and the nondenominational invocation, helped to formally start a day of legislative business at the General Meeting on November 22.

“I heard the Deer Park High School Women’s Choir perform at Michael Sena’s Run for Hope 5K Run/Walk held at Deer Park High School in October and knew that the Legislative auditorium needed to be

filled with their beautiful harmonies and voices,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank Choir Director Catherine Singer and the whole group for joining us. It was truly a memorable performance.”

The Deer Park Women’s Choir has been delighting audiences young and old since its inception in the year 2000. Based on the number of talented young women who shared their voices in the Deer Park High School Chorus, preceding choral director Mrs. Kristen Lombardo decided to broaden the horizons of these young women by creating a group based on their amazing voices alone. Consisting of 28-32 young women, members of this group are selected through

a rigorous audition. In their 22-year run, the Deer Park Women’s Choir, now under the direction of Mrs. Singer, has been asked to participate in a number of festivals, parades and music competitions across Long Island and beyond.

After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the choir will perform at the Music in the Parks Competition in Hershey, PA in June 2023 with hopes of receiving first place this year. This group’s dedication to promote choral music of quality through their stellar performances have allowed them to share their love of music with all around all built upon the sisterhood that bonds them together.

New Deer Park HS Electives Focus On Long Island History And Geography

Two new electives at Deer Park High School – Long Island History, a social studies course taught by Joseph Alo, and Natural History of Long Island, a science course taught by Kevin Richards – have turned attention on Long Island itself.

In Richards’ class, students learn about the geology and ecology of Long Island, exploring topics such as how glaciers impacted Long Island, the various ecosystems on Long Island, like the Hempstead Plains and how climate change can affect Long Islanders. Students participate in various lab activities to better understand these topics and attend field trips to explore some of Long Island’s amazing natural environments.

“The course was created to not only educate students about where they live, but hopefully instill a greater appreciation for the place we all call home,” Richards said.

Alo’s class explores Long Island history from its geological origins to the present day. Analyzing the island both as a distinct region and as a case study in the broader history of America, students

examine the impact of the ethnic, cultural, political, social and religious diversity that developed over time and gave the island its identity. Field trips exploring the culture and history that Long Island has to offer began with a visit to the Long Island Aquarium and possible future trips to Sagtikos Manor, the Gatsby-era Gold Coast mansions, the birthplace of Walt Whitman, Sagamore Hill, a Long Island Ducks game and countless other Long Island historic sites.

“Long Island holds a rich and storied history that is often overlooked in the grand scheme of the study of history,” Alo said. “As Long Islanders, it is important to understand the events and concepts that got us to where we are today. This is history and culture that directly impacts us, rather than reading about distant civilizations. For the first time at Deer Park High School, a course on Long Island history is being offered for students to better understand who we are as Long Islanders. I am honored to be teaching it in its inaugural year.”
