Town Of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta Launches Chamber Of Commerce Collaborative

The Town of Babylon initiated its Chamber of Commerce Collaborative with a meeting on Thursday, November 10 between the executive board members of various chambers of commerce located throughout the Town. This new initiative aims to bring together the common interest of the Town’s chambers to launch joint events and programming, including events with the SBA, throughout the year with the ultimate goal of enhancing small business growth and generating more networking opportunities.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and as revitalization continues to be a priority within the Town, it is imperative that we collaborate with one another to maximize benefits for local

businesses,” said Town of Babylon Councilman and Small Business Committee Chairman Anthony Manetta. “The Chamber Collaborative effort will bring together new ideas, help to solve common problems and serve as a thinktank to bolster the growth of small businesses in the Town of Babylon.”

The Town of Babylon Chamber Collaborative also serves to produce a dialogue of shared ideas and improvement between the chambers. Part of these discussions includes how to increase membership and small business participation and drive new revenue growth for members.

Those in attendance at the meeting included Deer Park Chamber President Danny Pooran, Lindenhurst Chamber President JoAnn Boettcher, Amityville Chamber

President Richard Zimmer, North Babylon Chamber President Garrett Simulcik, Farmingdale Chamber President Joe Garcia, Copiague Chamber First Vice President Pete Buccino and Babylon Village Chamber Vice President of Events Ben Stein.

“This effort led by Councilman Manetta is much needed throughout the Town of Babylon,” said Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce President JoAnn Boettcher. “It will not only help our small businesses with new opportunities but allows the chambers to work together more closely to build more robust organizations.”

Farmingdale Chamber President Joe Garcia applauded the new initiative, “This is one of the only Towns I know of who in a coordinated effort

brought all their chambers to work together. This can make a big impact on growing our small businesses and foster true

collaboration.”

The Town of Babylon looks forward to the Chamber Collaborative and the cooperation

Deer Park High Schoolers Gain Insight At College And Career Fair

Deer Park High School held its annual College and Career Fair on Oct. 27, providing students with the chance to meet and speak with over 30 colleges and universities; military branches including the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine

Corps; the Deer Park Fire Department; Western Suffolk BOCES; AccessVR; and the electrical and HVAC/R Training Center.

“We had such a wonderful turnout,” Associate Principal Dina Pannone said. “I know

our students were thrilled to speak with everyone in person and to be able to ask all of their questions to gain insight into the different organizations.”

Deer Park Celebrates 35 Years For The Holidays

On Saturday, December 3rd at 6:00 PM, the Deer Park Fire Department will be celebrating its 35th Annual Holiday Parade. The parade begins at Deer Park High School and proceeds down Deer Park Ave. south to the Deer Park Firehouse on Lake Avenue.

This year, we will be assisting “Our Little Warrior Joseph Baggio” in collecting unwrapped toys that will be used to help bring smiles to the children at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center.

Deer Park Postal Carriers will be on hand along the route to collect letters to

Santa and unwrapped toys for our Little Warrior. Boxes will also be available at the parade’s end.

Santa will be available to greet children at the end of the parade. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served at the completion of the parade.

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW)offers a wide range of assistance to veterans in Suffolk County, home to more veterans than any county in the state. These offerings address affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support and other services.

In this article, we’ll look at Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), an initiative in which MHAW collaborates with the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. SSVF programs provide housing and support services to eligible, low-income veteran families who are homeless, or who are about to become homeless.

Regrettably, America’s veterans require a number of support services. The National Library of Medicine recently estimated that up to 16 percent of U.S. service members who had been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq now have post-traumatic stress disorder or depression. Their other health concerns include suicide, traumatic brain injury, substance use and instances of interpersonal violence.

While Long Island has made significant strides in addressing homelessness among veterans in recent years, “Suffolk County still has its population of homeless veterans,” said Marcelle Leis, a retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant who serves as MHAW’s Director of Veteran Services. “They’re living in train stations or they might be living in the woods. Yet even though they’re in need, these individuals often don’t trust government or community agencies enough to step forward and request assistance. And they often don’t feel safe going into shelters.”

Community-based resources like SSVF, says Ms. Leis, can make a major difference in these veterans’ lives by helping them deal with mental health

issues, poverty and their need for supportive systems.

Some SSVF services include personal financial

planning, credit counseling and income support services. Qualifying veterans may also obtain legal assistance, housing counseling and healthcare navigation.

In relation to employment, SSVF also offers vocational and rehabilitation services through the state’s Department of Labor Employment Training Assistance by way of Suffolk County’s One-Stop Employment Center.

Also, SSVF provides case management services, as well as peer support and outreach services through MHAW’s Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Veterans may also receive assistance obtaining VA and other public benefits though the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

SSVF can also help veterans with temporary financial assistance in the form of rental assistance, utility bills, security or utility deposits, moving costs and childcare support. Eligible veterans may be single, or part of a family in which the head of the household, or spouse, is a veteran.

Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School Rededicates Beloved Garden

Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School recently held a rededication ceremony for the Mrs. Densing Memorial Garden. The garden was originally created in loving memory of Kathy Densing, a May Moore teacher. Its vibrant mural, recently updated by local artist Ron Becker, depicts the view from Densing’s home in Maine. A chalkboard was also installed so that teachers can take their classes outside to read and write. “I did not have the privilege of meeting Kathy, but her friends here at May Moore have shared memories of her kind and caring heart and her genuine love for all those she encountered,”

Principal Tammy Alcalde said. “When asked about Kathy, I heard many comments about her love of reading and writing and passion for sharing that love with her students. We envision our garden as an extension of our school building, another location for students to learn, read, write and play, which we think is an appropriate way to honor Mrs. Densing and her memory.”

The garden redesign was supported by the district’s buildings and grounds crew, who worked tirelessly to transform it into a place where multiple classes can come outside and enjoy nature while also being engaged in the learning process. The May

Moore Parent Faculty Club provided Adirondack chairs and a deck box, which stores outdoor cushions for the students.

At the rededication ceremony, a former colleague of Densing, May Moore teacher Deana LaPlaca, and five of her students – Seline Ertugrul, Kallie Fabrizio, Kaden France, Emmanuella Marsielle and Denzel Santos – shared a garden poem. The assembled audience include Densing’s sister, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School teacher Patty Katz, as well as Densing’s husband Larry and son Jack, who helped cut the ribbon officially reopening the garden.
