The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Historic Hudson Valley, which develops and produces the event, is a not-for-profit education organization that owns and operates National Historic Landmarks in New York’s Sleepy Hollow region. Proceeds from ticket purchases will support the education and preservation of Old Bethpage Village Restoration and Historic Hudson Valley.

“I want to thank Historic Hudson Valley for bringing its highly successful Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze to

Nassau County again this year,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. “This will be the third time Long Islanders will be able to enjoy this breathtaking, magical exhibit, the largest of its kind and an event that draws tens of thousands of residents from across Long Island.”

A tremendous artistic production, noted Creative Director Michael Natiello, who has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show, The Rachael Ray Show, The Today Show and HGTV, and whose carvings have been featured in the New York Times and People Magazine, leads a 25-person production team to produce Blaze: Long Island. Lead Carver, Carol Hough, who resides in Massapequa, and Artistic Carver, Rocco N. Lanzilotta of Westbury, will guide and direct Blaze: Long Island’s 15 artisans, who hand-carve 7,000 jack o’lanterns which will be displayed in elaborate pumpkin sculptures throughout the event.

“This year’s event features more exhibits and new special effects, which we are all very excited about,” said Waddell Stillman, President, Historic Hudson Valley. “I want to thank Nassau County for welcoming us back and for giving us the opportunity to entertain Long Islanders like never before! I also want to thank the many hard-working artisans,

production team members and community volunteers, who are working day and night to bring this thrilling Halloween event to life.”

Over 400 community volunteers, including Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops from Plainedge, Levittown, and West Islip, as well as Bethpage High School and Plainedge High School students, will also participate in the event as the Official Lighters of the 7,000 hand-carved jack o’lanterns.

Blaze: Long Island has limited capacity and all admissions are by advance purchase timed ticket or FLEX anytime ticket. No tickets are sold on site. Old Bethpage Village

Restoration is a living history museum owned and operated by Nassau County that provides guests the opportunity to step back in time to the island’s agrarian past. The Village, which hosts the Long Island Fair in September, consists of homes, barns and other buildings dating back to 1765. Costumed interpreters describe life as it was in the 19th century and historic trade smiths demonstrate various trades.

Deer Park High School recently recognized 41 current students for earning AP Scholar designation for 2022 by the College Board, recognizing their diligence in attaining college-level achievement in AP courses and exams. The Advanced Placement Program recognizes

Preservation Long Island Announces Call For Endangered Historic Places Nominations

Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places Program Offers Long Islanders An Opportunity To Advocate For Preservation Priorities In Their Communities. Nominations Are Open To The Public And Due Tuesday, November 1, 2022

Preservation Long Island, a regional preservation advocacy nonprofit, is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2023 Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP).

Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted digitally through the EHPP 2023 Nominations portal on Preservation Long Island’s website. All nominations must be received by Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

Do you know of an endangered historic place in your Long Island community? Important historic places across Long Island are threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to a lack of appreciation for their historic value, or the inability to develop sustainable long-term plans for preservation and stewardship. Preservation Long Island (formerly the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities), established the biennial Endangered Historic Places Program with the goal of raising region-wide support for historic places facing precarious circumstances.

“The program offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach,” said Alexandra Wolfe, Preservation Long Island’s Executive Director.

“Our program partners receive priority technical assistance from our professional staff and their listings are featured on our website and social media.”

“Recognizing significant historic places at the local level provides the strongest protection for historic resources on Long Island and across New York State,” said Sarah Kautz, Preservation

Long Island’s Director of Preservation and Advocacy. “We work with partners selected for the program to develop informational materials outlining the history of a specific site and its preservation needs to help build awareness and support for historic preservation with residents and the municipal government in their community.”

Endangered Historic Places Program sites on Long Island are selected by a panel of Preservation Long Island staff, experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields, as well as members of Preservation Long Island’s Board of Trustees.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Significance: A nominated site must be historically, culturally, or architecturally significant and may encompass individual buildings, landscapes, structures, or any grouping thereof. However, the nominated site need not be listed on the National/State Registers of Historic Places or designated as a local landmark.

Threat: The existence and/ or integrity of the nominated site must be seriously threatened. In addition to planned demolition, threats can include a pattern of neglect or exposure that will inevitably lead to loss; the planned introduction of harmful factors or insensitive redevelopment that will substantially diminish the context or setting; or inappropriate maintenance/ alterations resulting in the loss of material integrity.

Impact: Inclusion in our Endangered Historic Places Program must have a positive impact on efforts to protect the nominated site. Nominators must demonstrate meaningful community interest and

support for preservation of the site. Local partners must be sufficiently organized and prepared to advocate for preservation goals.

Nomination materials should be submitted online via our website at preservationlongisland.org. Nominations submitted after Tuesday, November 1, 2022 will not be accepted.

On Sunday, November 6th, “Long Island Cars” will present the “Best Cars on Long Island” Car Show & Swap Meet at LICHA at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Classic and collectible automobiles including street rods, muscle cars, antiques, exotics and imports compete in this judged event with trophies awarded in over fifty classes from stock to modified.

Once again, this final show of the season will include “Long Island Cars” signature Swap Meet, where vendors will be selling all kinds of auto parts, accessories and collectibles.

Historically High Fuel Prices

Historically high fuel prices will undoubtedly prove to be one of the defining stories of 2022. As the average price for a gallon of gas reached heights drivers might never have imagined as recently as February 2022, some might have wondered just how much that same gallon might have cost roughly 100 years ago. According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the average price for a gallon of gas in 1929 was 21 cents. Inflation calculators indicate that 21 cents in 1929 would have about the same purchasing power as $3.59 has in 2022, suggesting that drivers had a far less painful trip to the pump in 1929 than they have had for much of 2022.

Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves.

A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children.

Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

The Michael Sena Memorial Fund was created in honor of

Michael Sena, who tragically lost his battle with drug addiction on November 8, 2016. Michael fought against drug addiction for many years, often times running and exercising to help him remain sober.

Overdose deaths are on the rise across the United States. Over 107,000 people died of overdose deaths in 2021, which has tripled since 2015. This epidemic is getting more dire by the day and will continue to devastate families without the help from our communities.

All proceeds from our Run for Hope event and donations help further Michael’s wish to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and help us connect to those currently battling addiction with helpful community resources.

“People love the convenience, but there remains a lot of misunderstanding surrounding BNPL services and their impact on people’s financial lives,” said Amy Maliga, a financial educator with Take Charge America, a nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency.

“With that confusion, it’s easy to miss the potential risks. That’s why it’s always important to take a closer

look at a new service or product — especially ones that make it easier to part with your hard-earned money.”

Before using BNPL services, Maliga says it’s important to keep in mind the following:

They are a form of credit. BNPL providers may promote themselves as a simpler way to pay for everyday purchases without relying on debt or credit, but don’t be fooled: BNPL payments are a type of credit. And if you miss a payment, some services charge late fees or interest. Be cautious when using these services, as you can easily get in over your head.

You’ll likely spend more.

There’s a reason retailers aggressively promote BNPL: People tend to spend more using these services. A LendingTree survey found two-thirds of shoppers spent more using BNPL plans than they would have otherwise. Before completing that latest purchase, check your budget and bank account. Be sure you can really afford what you’re buying instead of putting yourself at risk of falling into debt.

Inconsistent credit score impacts. Most BNPL providers don’t report on-time payment data to the major credit bureaus, meaning you receive none of the upsides of responsible repayment.

However, negative events like missed payments or collections activity, are likely to be reported. This makes it even more critical to make your BNPL payments on time and avoid missing any.

No consumer protections. Because of BNPL’s standard fourinstallment payment plans, these services fall outside the purview of the Truth in Lending Act.

Translation: Consumers have no protection from any potential predatory or deceptive lending practices with BNPL providers. Federal law requires five installments before triggering any regulations.

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings.

On Sunday, October 23rd “Long Island Cars” will present the “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet on the scenic grounds of Flowerfields Fairgrounds in Saint James. Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, oneof-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies

will be granted in more than fifty categories.

Acres of vendors will be well stocked for this large end of the season show, where you can buy, trade, sell or swap auto parts, equipment, accessories, collectibles and literature, plus a wide variety of cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.” There is a pumpkin patch with free pumpkins for the kids.
