On a recent Saturday, the SJB Crew Team competed at the Brickyard 5000. The day started out like any other, with the first few races running smoothly. As the day wore on, the wind picked up and the already rough Hudson River turned into a series of veritable tsunamis. My race, the Varsity Eight, the last heat of the day, was running right on time. The course had been shortened, and I was to compete head to head with my little brother. As we paddled out, I knew I could not let him win for the sake of bragging rights. We knew the water was rough, but we also knew we were ready. As we spun the boat and got underway, the crack of the oars hitting
the water signaled the start of our very brief rivalry. In that moment, I wanted nothing more than to beat my brother. After the first few hundred meters, we were ahead and gaining, but after a few minutes, that all changed. As we slightly altered our course, a huge wave crashed over our port side, flooding the boat. We were still afloat, but the added water weight made every stroke less productive. With every stroke, my brother’s boat was gaining and we were taking on more water. Coming into the final two hundred meters, we were still in the lead, but barely. It was close, but we had them by about a boat length. Then, our Cox had us suddenly stop rowing.

From the back of the boat, I couldn’t make out what she was saying. One by one, I saw the boys in front of me jump out of the boat and into the Hudson. Panicked, I jumped out too. Our boat had sunk, and we were floating in the middle of one of the roughest waters in New York. As we watched my brother swiftly finish, we realized that we had lost. Sure, it was on mere luck, but he was the one toting the Gold Medal. Embarrassed, we boarded the Haverstraw Fire Department’s boat. I had lost, to my brother no less. Even though I was sad we didn’t finish, I was happy at least one of the Cianciulli boys was bringing home the gold for SJB Crew.

But now, behold, on the far horizon, one sees several stratocumulus clouds revealing their puffy, hoary cotton balls And I fantasize a desire and urge, like a lad, to jump and frolic upon them. When once more the sky appears blue like the calm waters of a tepid tropical sea, I am restored again, breathing deeply and at ease, achieving a state of elation and high spirits. It is the sky’s indigo light and the crepuscular rays of sunshine passing in and through the diaphanous clouds which bestirs one to vibrant fervor and eagerness for life.

Partnered with educational nonprofit organization ComputerUsing Educators, Google held its first intensive Google Teacher Academy in 2006 at its California headquarters, providing the participants with hands-on experience with Google products and technology and a chance to network with likeminded colleagues. They are recognized as Google Certified Teachers upon completing the program. Subsequent academies have taken place nationwide as well as in countries such as Australia and the U.K., and the company now boasts over 800 K-12 Google Certified Teachers worldwide. A Bay Shore resident and graduate of Deer Park’s Class of 1998, Kauter has taught at the high school for 12 years, mainly focusing on social studies. He began embracing technology
three or four years ago, and cites the moment that Deer Park “went Google” in 2011 as a turning point, leading to his current status as a Google Certified Teacher and trainer, having passed six tests and a case study. “This is the thing I’m most proud of in my educational career so far,” he said, with the recognition netting him excellent feedback in the educational community here on Long Island. “A lot of doors opened,” he added. Kauter applied for the Google Teacher Academy in late May. Out of more than 2,000 applicants, only 50 were selected to participate at this session. His fellow educators arriving at Google’s Chicago offices in July came from every corner of the globe, including New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Zimbabwe. “Just being part of that group was rewarding,” said Kauter, who relished the chance for cross-cultural

problem-solving. “It really was a great collaborative experience. Everyone was willing to share their ideas and solutions.” Networking has been a major benefit of participating in the program, and Kauter noted that he now has a global network of teachers to tap into. “We talk and share ideas on a daily basis,” he said. “It’s a very diverse group offering new ways to teach technology.” He is trying to bring what he learned at the Google course to his
12th-grade government classroom back home. “It changed my perspective on education,” Kauter explained. “I am more optimistic and focus on the positive. I’m not into lectures – I like to get into the trenches and dig into current events with the students.” Utilizing Google Drive and making apps for his students are among the tangible technological upgrades that have resulted from Kauter’s fruitful achievement.

Forever An Original By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Albert Capraro, Lindenhurst High School Class of 1961 graduate, Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976 and personal designer of choice to none other than First Lady Betty Ford, passed away on October 8th, 2013 following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a profile for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ... Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far
as to attend the “fashion shows” and “movie premieres” he would put on at his home. After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Mr. Capraro landed his first job working with a French designer on Park Avenue. He then moved on to a position with noted designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. After reading a favorable review of his clothing line, First
Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro
finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.

Fire Safety Workshop
In conjunction with Fire Safety Month, the Deer Park Fire Department brought a thorough fire safety assembly to John Quincy Adams and May Moore elementary schools in October, presented by Assistant Chief Phil Scarfi. Scarfi, who has been conducting similar fire safety workshops for Deer Park’s schools during the past 34 years, demonstrated a working fire alarm for the youngsters, telling them to become familiar with the sound and noting that it takes an average of five minutes for a person to wake up to a fire alarm. He also discussed candle and kitchen safety, the importance of sleeping with bedroom doors closed, the need for a
selected special meeting place outside, how to dial 911, and what a person should do if they or their clothes catch on fire. “A fire in the home can be extremely frightening, and it’s OK to be afraid,” said Scarfi. “We should be afraid of fire, and if we learn what to do to help prevent it, and what to do if there is a fire, we can keep ourselves safe.” Schoolwide fire safety programs are extremely effective in preparing elementary students for emergency situations, according to JQA Principal Christine Criscione. “Our students are fortunate to have the resources of Assistant Chief Scarfi and our wonderful Deer Park Fire Department,” added
May Moore Principal Alicia Konecny. “We all need to be careful and educated when it comes to fire safety. Our students know how to respond to the sound of a smoke alarm – to get low and get out when they hear it. A child who practices these skills ahead of time will have a better chance to be safe. Just a little bit of planning can make a big difference for our families.” At the conclusion of the program, Scarfi gave every grade and class at both schools a chance to view one of the department’s fire trucks, demonstrating the fire hose and other firefighting tools to the eager children, many of whom donned red toy fire helmets.

Deer Park High School student Andreas Stamatakis was recently named a semifinalist in the 59th Annual 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program, the prestigious academic scholarship competition that has recognized remarkable academic achievements since 1955. This high-achieving senior and future salutatorian, ranked second in Deer Park’s top 10 of the Class of 2014, was recognized for his outstanding test results in the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Out of the more than 1.5 million students from over 22,000 schools who competed by taking the PSAT as juniors,
Stamatakis placed among the top 1 percent in New York State. He and the approximately 16,000 other semifinalists, named on a state representational basis, will continue in the competition for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million that will be offered next spring. “There is no doubt in my mind that Andreas possesses the intelligence, focus and determination to accomplish great things in the future,” said Meryl Fischer, Stamatakis’s guidance counselor at the school. He is a young man of rare ability whose potential is unlimited. Wherever he goes, he will leave his mark as he has at Deer Park High School.” While his academic performance is remarkable, including being named an AP Scholar of Distinction, scoring 100 on seven out of 12 Regents examinations and receiving a perfect 5 out of 5 on all six Advanced Placement exams taken, Stamatakis’s well-rounded resume makes it clear why he is such a unique and highly-regarded scholar and NMS candidate.
Stamatakis worked as an intern in the physics department at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y. this past summer, and intends to pursue a double major in economics and physics after graduation. His dual interests are reflected in two of his primary leadership roles, serving as co-president of the Science Olympiad team – where he was named a finalist at the Feb. 23 regional competition – and as president of Suffolk County DECA for 2013-2014. In the latter business-focused school organization, Stamatakis finished in first place in Suffolk County DECA competitions and in the top 10 in New York State in both 2012 and 2013. A trilingual speaker – also fluent in Italian and Greek – he serves as president of the Deer Park Academic Team, is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, Italian Honor Society and Math Team, and has competed on Deer Park’s boys varsity swim team for the past five years.
