Mindfulness & Spirituality Workshop Through Art For Breast Cancer Survivors

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a free four-session creative arts workshop empowering breast cancer survivors to express themselves using art. This therapeutic program offers a safe place to communicate thoughts, feelings, concerns, problems, hopes and dreams. The professional staff guides participants through different exercises and discussions helping to find ways to gain personal insight and develop new coping skills.

This Mindfulness & Spirituality Workshop helps participants stay focused

and aware of the present moment while exploring the relationship between spirituality, healing and art.

This workshop will be facilitated by Angela M. Papalia, LMSW, Assistant Director for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, along with Kimberly Newman, BFA, Communications and Marketing Coordinator for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program.

The workshop will take place on four consecutive Thursdays—October 27, November 3, November 10 and November 17—from 10 am to 11:30 am.

All four sessions will start with a relaxation/breathing exercise. Then participants will complete several creative projects focusing on mindfulness & spirituality. These projects will help reduce negativity and will be self-soothing resulting in stress reduction.

Participants will need computer access with a camera, microphone, and internet. Each attendee will receive a package in the mail containing: a printed packet outlining each session; printed sheets needed for activities; the zoom link for the workshop; and art supplies. Some additional everyday

items will be needed. The packet will list everything needed for each session.

This workshop is free but registration is required and members must commit to attending the entire four-week-session. Registration ends on October 14.

The support group is sponsored due to generous funding from the Marilyn Lichtman Foundation and New York State.

2022 Annual Jake K Foundation Zombie Run!

The Jake K Foundation (JKF) is pleased to announce our 2022 annual “Zombie Run” to be held on Saturday, October 8th at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon. Join us for the Zombie Run 5k, a run or walk to benefit the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation (the JKF)“Reducing the barriers to recovery.”  Run with us in person on race day, or join us from anywhere in the world by using our virtual option.

The Mission of JKF is to bridge the gap for those affected and effected by Substance Use Disorder (Addiction) who are ready and willing to seek a solution. We are closing the gaps in the recovery road through education, connection,

while providing resources to those without access to resources. Funds donated to JKF are used to support entry funding and transportation to recovery facilities that use a peer community model that teaches a solution that have a program duration of four months or longer.

People in active drug and alcohol addiction will do damage to their families, end up in an institution, in jail, die, or they work to build recovery. We create opportunities for people to take their lives back.

Participants will receive a long sleeve race t-shirt with our zombie race logo. Awards will go to the top overall male and female runners, plus the top winners in age groups.

Costume Contest. Think you got what it takes to be the greatest zombie in the bunch?  Wear your finest Zombie garb to the event!  Our panel of undead experts will pick their favorites and award $50 Amazon gift cards to the six best costumes.  Criteria for winning will be determined by the panel, based on which costumes make us laugh, cry, scare us, or binge watch the Walking Dead.

American Cancer Society Announces The 29th Year Of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer On Long Island

A Celebration Of Courage And Supportive Communities Returns In Person In 2022

The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement, will unite residents across Long Island on October 16th, at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5.

In its 29th year, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement embraces a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, while raising awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. “Thanks in large part to the decades of work and the dollars raised, a breast cancer diagnosis does not come without hope, and the breast cancer journey is not one that has to be traveled alone,” says Brittany Lawton, Associate Director, Development.

This year, female breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with more than 287,000 women

diagnosed. Men are also impacted by breast cancer, with an estimated 2,710 men expected to receive a diagnosis in 2022.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.

Seven Deer Park High Schoolers Earn National College Board Awards

Seven outstanding Deer Park High School students were recently recognized by the College Board based on their academic achievements in school and performance on the PSAT or AP Exams.

Denise Offiah, Ezekiel Babarinde and Gabrielle Mayne earned

the National African American Recognition Award; Gabriella Ortiz, Kaetlynne Quinones and Tiffany Bala earned the National Hispanic Recognition Award; and Yasmine Sanchez earned the National Hispanic Recognition Award as well as the National Indigenous

Award.

“These students have accomplished these milestones during an immensely demanding period of their high school career,” Associate Principal Dina Pannone said. “We couldn’t be more delighted to congratulate them.”

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought 4-Session Training In November

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary.

This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities;

deliver educational presentations and speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.

Options For Community Living Receives Support From Bethpage Federal Credit Union

Nonprofit organizations are an integral force on Long Island, improving the quality of life for adults and children in our communities.

Partnerships take this impact one step further. Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options), a Long Island based notfor-profit human services organization, and Bethpage Federal Credit Union (BFCU), enjoy a partnership designed to strengthen the Long Island community through volunteerism, in-kind donations, board support, and grant funding. Partnership projects are designed to bridge the missions of both organizations.

As a major supporter of Long Island-based community programs for children, Bethpage Federal Credit Union donated 65 backpacks to families in Options programs. Each backpack was filled with

supplies for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

“Every child deserves to start the school year with confidence”, said Robert Suarez, AVP of Community Development. “Starting the school year off with the appropriate supplies sets students up for success, empowers them, and fuels a love of learning.”

Additional support in the form of grant funding was awarded to Options through the Bethpage Cares Charitable Giving Program. A $15,000 grant award provides vital financial support for Options housing program for formerly homeless Long Islanders with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Last year, this program provided safe, stable, supportive housing for 200 adults and children.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

October is a month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways.

October 14 is World Sight Day, which focuses on public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues to influence funding for national blindness prevention and to educate about blindness prevention.

October 15 is White Cane Day, established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane, to help motorists identify and yield to people using one and to create legal penalties for not doing so.

Additionally, the entire month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities, past and present, and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Taken together, a common goal of these intersecting events is to raise the level of appreciation for people who do not have full use of their sight, yet overcome daily challenges to live and be treated equally alongside their sighted brothers and sisters.

Helen Keller Services (HKS) is a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation.
