County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored six local students from his district as recipients of a Suffolk County Legislature 20232024 Distinguished Youth Award (DYA). Earning the awards after completion of an extensive year-long program, they were each recognized with medals, certificates and Proclamations in a special ceremony at the Suffolk County Legislature on Tuesday, August 20 in Hauppauge.
The DYA program challenges County adolescents to begin or continue their journeys of personal growth through various initiatives that provide opportunities for them to become more civically-minded. Established by Legislative Resolution in 2017, the unique program is designed to engage youth in learning and experiencing involvement in volunteer service, personal development, exploration and physical fitness. Students commit to completing requirements in two, three or all four categories for Bronze, Silver or Gold recognition. Each category can require up to 100 or more hours of activity that must be logged and certified. The program is open to all Suffolk County youths between the ages of 13 and 18.
Students from the 17th Legislative District who earned awards were: Gloria Min (Gold) and Jaidyn Schabe (Gold) from Deer Park High School, Morenike Olukoya (Gold) from North Babylon High School and Owen Bonvicin (Bronze),
Thomas Galvin (Bronze) and Ryan Perillo (Gold) from Walt Whitman High School in the South Huntington School District.
“I commend all six of these remarkable students for their commitment and passion by embarking on this journey and sticking with it to completion. They should be very proud of themselves and it is an honor to recognize them,” said Legislator Donnelly.
Register is currently underway for the 2024-2025 Distinguished Youth Award program. To learn more and/ or get started, visit www. scnylegislature.us/896/ Distinguished-Youth-Award or call Legislator Donnelly’s office at (631) 854-4433.

Blessed with a sun-filled first day, students from the Deer Park School District’s five buildings – Deer Park High School, Robert Frost Middle School, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, John Quincy Adams Primary School and May Moore Primary School – enjoyed a terrific start to the 2024-2025 school year
on Sept. 3.
“We had an excellent first day,” May Moore Principal Tammy Alcalde said. “Our students returned with smiles on their faces, and we welcomed our new entrants in pre-K and kindergarten. Both students and staff felt excited to be back, and we loved greeting our
students and families. We look forward to a year of learning and growing and we couldn’t be ‘Moore’ happy to be back.”
“We had such a wonderful first day at JQA,” Principal Christopher Molinelli said.
“It was so nice to see our hallways and classrooms once again filled with smiling faces eager to start
a new school year.”
“It was another great start to our school year,” JFK Principal Kelly Benson said. “We love seeing familiar faces and new faces arriving at JFK, and are looking forward to a great year.”

Incoming ninth graders received a warm welcome at Deer Park High School’s freshman orientation on Aug. 27, as they learned to navigate a new building, new classes and new ways of learning with the guidance of administrators and helpful upperclassmen.
“The freshman orientation for the class of 2028 was an outstanding start to what promises to be an incredible high school journey at Deer Park High School,” Principal Charles Cobb said. “Our newest students were eager, engaged and ready to embrace all the opportunities that lie ahead. We are excited to support them every step of the way as they embark on this new chapter of their lives.”
