The Charity of the Month for September is Harmony Cafe

Cafe, grew up in a working-class family, where money was tight and food insecurity was sometimes a cause of stress. Her vision for this organization is to have a storefront cafe that will serve healthy meals based upon a donation model. Although they do not have a physical cafe yet, since they started in 2016, they have hosted countless “meal events”, primarily at the VFW Hall on Edwards Street in Patchogue. Their meal events are socially engaging events, usually running for about 2.5 hours multiple times a month. They are meant to bring the community together, while serving anyone who attends a fresh healthy meal. This nonprofit is also licensed to offer the FEAST Program. The FEAST Program is a comprehensive health program, which offers in-person classes. FEAST stands for Food Education, Access, Support and Together. “We at Harmony Cafe believe that a healthy life consists of whole foods, whole people and whole communities,” said Rosemarie. “However, many people don’t have access to healthy fresh food, don’t have a strong support system and feel isolated from the community. Unhealthy diets is among some of the key contributors to the dramatic rise in obesity and dietary diseases affecting people in our country today. In order to address these issues, the FEAST Program serves parents or heads or households through our comprehensive 12-week Wellness Program. It is a very successful program!” Their next FEAST Program begins on September 13, 2022 and will take place at their office, located at 20 Medford Avenue, Suite 108, Patchogue, NY 11772 from 6:00PM8:00PM. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) honored four new Eagle Scouts from Deer Park Boy Scout Troop 157 at their Court of Honor, held at the Deer Park Fire Department in Deer Park. To achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, Ernest Cairo, Christopher Joyce, Thomas Joyce and Patrick Oswald each had to complete an extensive service project. Ernest Cairo renovated the garden at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Church, Christopher Joyce created the Deer Park Honor Roll Vietnam War Monument at the Deer Park Schools Central Administration Building, Thomas Joyce designed and built dug-out style roofs for two player benches at Birchwood Park in Deer Park and Patrick Oswald renovated the concession stand at Deer Park High School. “As evidenced by their unique, impressive and impactful projects, all four of these young men have demonstrated leadership, hard work and dedication, qualities and traits that set Eagle Scouts apart,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I both salute them and praise and thank all of past and present leaders and scouts in Troop 157 for all that they have done and continue to do for the community.”

a significant coastline, a rich maritime heritage and growing opportunities to view ocean wildlife from the shores and in the water.”Ata recent event in New York City, Mission Blue and its founder, the internationally renowned marine biologist Sylvia Earle, officially named Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot. Pikitch, on behalf of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science, nominated the bay for this global recognition and Ted Janulis, on behalf of The Explorers Club, served as second nominator. The official naming took place at The Explorers Club and acknowledged the work of Pikitch and her colleagues at Stony Brook University’s SoMAS, where a team of scientists, educators and students worked together to revive the health, biodiversity, and aquaculture potential of Shinnecock Bay. “The Hope Spot distinction for this unique bay on Long Island is the result of meticulous work and proof that the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program has succeeded in bringing the bay back to the healthier state it was in many decades ago,” says Pikitch, the Endowed Professor of Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University and SoMAS, and Director of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science.“Shinnecock Bay is arguably the healthiest bay in New York State, and our work demonstrates that people can reverse the damage done through nature based, scientifically guided restoration,” she continued. “We hope and expect that designation of Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot will inspire others to take action to restore other places to their original beauty, biodiversity, and health.”Shinnecock Bay is a highly productive estuary that is approximately 122 kilometers from New York City. The bay is a hidden gem of biodiversity that covers an area of 40 square kilometers and consists of 9,000 acres of open water, salt marshes, intertidal flats, and seagrass beds. These habitats serve as important nursery, feeding, and breeding grounds for many species. Additionally, the Shinnecock Bay area and surrounding lands has a long history to the Shinnecock Nation, whose reservation is located on the far eastern part of the bay. Leaders of the Shinnecock Nation have endorsed the designation of Shinnecock Bay as a HopeTheSpot.creation of “hard clam sanctuaries” in western Shinnecock Bay is a pivotal part of the restoration effort of the SoMAS Stony Brook University team. As a result of this work the dangerous brown and red tides that had been occurring annually have not been observed for several years. Landings of hard clams outside the sanctuaries have increased dramatically and are at a level not seen since the mid-1980’s. And, numbers of fish in the bay, most notably forage fishes such as bay anchovy and menhaden, have escalated.
