5TH ANNUAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS WALK

On August 4th, 2023, the Town Board had the pleasure of joining The Deer Park Drug Prevention Coalition Inc. on their 5th Annual Overdose Awareness Walk! Families and communities gathered together to honor the lives lost and support those struggling due to drug use. Supervisor Schaffer, Councilman Terence McSweeney & DuWayne Gregory said thank you to all who continue to ﬁght to make a difference and spread awareness about the overdose crisis. The march was led by the Suffolk County Police Department and followed by the Deer Park Fire Department.

HPV Vaccination

Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV.

The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the beneﬁts of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less beneﬁt. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.

Beneﬁts Of Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness.

A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisﬁed with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Dr. Heather Zinkin has a special interest in integrative medicine, patient wellness and nutrition. She

attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She graduated from NYU School of Medicine and performed her medical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She completed a residency in radiation oncology at a combined program at Tufts and Brown University and served as chief resident. She then returned to her hometown where she has been practicing for the past 15 years and was appointed Chief of Radiation Medicine at Huntington Hospital. She has given many survivorship lectures

both in hospital and community settings including active participation in the Northwell Wellness Center. She has also served on various physician panels for community education and holds certiﬁcates in Nutrition from Cornell University.

The John Brower, Jr. Foundation, in partnership with Outreach, will host the 8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 1 (check-in begins at 9:00 a.m.).

The Walk was established by the Brower family (parents John, Sr. and Jody, and their children Kristen and Robert) in 2014 after they tragically lost their son John, Jr. to an opioid overdose in 2014. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic and the suppport needed to ﬁght the problem that continues to devastate families and communities throughout Long Island. All funds raised support Outreach’s life-saving treatment programs and services for individuals and families.

The Walk along the historic Jones Beach

Boardwalk serves as an ongoing tribute to the memory of John Brower, Jr. and others who have been lost to the ongoing opioid crisis. The Walk offers information to inspire and educate the public about substance and alcohol use disorders and the treatment options available to them and their loved ones. How to Participate

The 8th Annual John Brower, Jr. 5K Heroes Against Heroin Walk will take place, rain, or shine. All are welcome - families, groups, and individuals.

Download and complete a Registration Form https:// opiny.org/wp-content/ uploads/2023/07/5K-WalkRegistration-Packet.pdf and return it to the address noted on the form as soon as possible. Children under 18 should have their form

signed by a parent or guardian. They must also be accompanied at the Walk by an adult.

Note: All walkers must also complete and sign an accompanying waiver and photo release.

Check-in on the morning of the event begins at 9:00 a.m. The walk begins promptly at 10 a.m. Free parking will be available at Jones Beach Parking Field 1 – participants should mention to the attendant that they are attending the Outreach/Brower Walk.

Facing Food Insecurity!

Final Summer Food Collection Drive Friday,

On Friday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island summer food collection drive comes to West Babylon. Food collection bins and a drive-through option will be set up at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon, where members of the public can donate nonperishable items and household essentials for neighbors facing food insecurity.

PSEG Long Island is giving out reusable shopping bags and LED lightbulbs

as a thank you. With your help and the generous donations of fellow Long Islanders, the initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals during July, August and September. Last year, thanks to your kindness, the equivalent of more than 42,000 meals was collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative.

Please consider donating some of the healthy foods you feed your own family, pet food or personal care items, including:

Nonperishable food (no glass jars, please): Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as lowsodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, along with rice, pasta, popcorn kernels, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food.

Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.

Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care

products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.

Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.
