At the end of the school year at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, third graders enjoyed a special visit from fifth graders who were about to move up to middle school. Students were paired up to celebrate all they learned during the year using teacher Frances Marotta’s math literature collection. Not only did the fifth graders read math picture books to the third graders, but the younger students read to the older students as well. “Our students were all smiles sharing math stories together,” Marotta said. “It was a perfect way to review math concepts while making new friendships.” John F. About Long Island’s Own Buddy Merriam: Buddy Merriam and Back Roads were formed in 1980 out of Buddy’s love and respect for traditional Bluegrass music. He became close friends with the Father of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, and got to learn from and eventually perform with him.In September of 2015 Buddy was honored to receive the “Long Island Sound Award” from the LI Music Hall of Fame “For Outstanding Contributions to Long Island’s Musical Heritage.” He has brought Back Roads down to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to perform a few times, and they’ve also performed at the grand opening of the Bluegrass Museum and Hall of Fame in Owensboro, KY and Country Music’s Fan Fair in Nashville, TN. The group has played at most of the Bluegrass Festivals in the northeastern U.S., including Grey Fox and Podunk, and at several Long Island venues, such as Hecksher Park in Huntington, Bald Hill Cultural Center, Agawam Park in Southampton, and has headlined concerts for LITMA (the Long Island Traditional Music Association), the Huntington Folk Music Society and the Museums at Stony Brook Folk & FiddleBuddyFestival.
