Deer Park Resident Amber Marshall For Women Veterans Appreciation Day

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently recognized United States Air Force Veteran Amber Marshall of Deer Park as his 2023 Suffolk County Women Veteran of Distinction.

Legislator Donnelly read her name and shared details about Ms. Marshall’s dedicated service to the Country at the Legislature’s General Meeting on Tuesday, July 25 in Hauppauge before presenting her with a Proclamation.

Ms. Marshall served with the 577th Expeditionary Group in multiple countries during Operation Enduring

Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve. She was an Electrician in the Civil Engineering unit. Since leaving the military, she has welcomed the support from Long Island nonprofits that aid Veterans and the Northport VA Hospital which assisted her in her employment search. She credits them with helping her re-integrate into civilian life. She earned a scholarship and completed a small business program at Hofstra University. Utilizing the skills she learned there, she recently opened a permitexpediting business, “Long Island’s Strike Force Permitting Services.” She is a graduate of North

Award From BRIDGE NY To Enhance Phelps Lane Culvert

The Town of Babylon recently received funding from New York State’s BRIDGE NY initiative to replace a crucial culvert in the community. The BRIDGE NY initiative combats climate change through the support of projects that reduce the risk of flooding, improving structure resiliency and enhancing regional economic status as well. As part of the recent funding announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, the Town was awarded $1.96 million to replace the Phelps Lane culvert carrying the tributary to Carlls River in Suffolk County.

“This funding assists us in making the necessary

additions to improve the safety, sustainability and reliability of infrastructure,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “Our daily interactions with our crucial infrastructure, especially bridges and culverts, allow us to often take their resiliency for granted. However, it is our significant and perpetual use of them that makes the maintenance and upgrades of our infrastructure paramount.”

The $1.96 million award given to the Town of Babylon was part of $516 million in enhanced assistance allocated to 141 local governments by BRIDGE NY. Long Island received the most

funding of any New York region, totaling $73.5 million. Over 140 bridges and culverts in New York State will be enhanced to better withstand extreme weather and boost safety. Local governments will be supported throughout the entire process of their infrastructure improvements, from design to right-ofway acquisition to construction.

Prior to this recent designation of funding, the BRIDGE NY initiative distributed more than $716 million to local governments. The capital plan adopted by the State last year committed $1 billion to BRIDGE NY, almost doubling the size of the program.

Town Of Babylon And Encon Industries Unveil New Garbage Truck Fleet Introduction Of 34 New Trucks To Yield Environmental, Safety, And Monetary Benefits

The Town of Babylon and Encon Industries recently unveiled 34 stateof-the-art garbage trucks that will serve the Town and provide tremendous environmental and safety benefits. This new fleet was built by Encon Industries specifically for the Town

of Babylon, with each truck depicting a scene of the Town’s beauty. At the unveiling press conference, Town of Babylon elected officials and Encon Industries executives eagerly discussed the benefits residents will experience from the new

trucks.

“With the fleet manufactured and delivered ahead of schedule, these beautiful new trucks are ready to dutifully serve our community,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “They will efficiently

clean our streets, all while showcasing the lovely landscapes of the Town of Babylon and saving residents money.”

The Town of Babylon’s new contract with Encon Industries will keep the Town’s garbage taxes among the lowest on Long

Island. Encon Industries’ first 10-year-old contract saved residents over $124 million compared to the Town’s previous carter. This resulted in the Town’s per household rate being cut almost in half during this period.

“The unveiling of this

new fleet celebrates our continued tradition of savings with Encon Industries,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “We encourage residents to be on the lookout for these new trucks as they enhance our community and keep Babylon clean.”

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored Priya Persaud, RN, a nurse at Catholic Health Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, as his 2023 Healthcare Hero. A nurse for the past seven years, Ms. Persaud has worked as an Operating Room Nurse for the majority of her career. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was floated to the medical ICU to work alongside her fellow nurses and other medical professionals to provide critical care for

the surge of patients at the time. Legislator Donnelly presented Ms. Persaud with a County Proclamation at his district office in Huntington Station on July 13.

“Day after day, Ms. Persaud works tirelessly and goes above and beyond to ensure her patients receive the best possible care, making her a true hero,” said Legislator Donnelly. “It was a privilege to recognize her for her positive impact and her service to the community.”

Ms. Persaud resides in Deer Park with her husband and two sons.

In a resolution passed in 2021 by the Suffolk County Legislature, the month of June is designated as “Healthcare Heroes Month” in Suffolk County to acknowledge and honor healthcare workers who inspire the entire community with their exceptional service and selfless contributions. Each Legislator selects one person as their healthcare hero and their names and accomplishments are read into the record. This year’s recipients were announced at the June 21 General Meeting in Riverhead.

PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank are kicking off PSEG Long Island’s third annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive initiative.

Continuing through Sept. 22 – the last full day of summer – collection drives will be set up at six supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate nonperishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Islanders facing food insecurity.

estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals.

“We created PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island as a way to provide a venue for people to help people. PSEG Long Island’s Summer Food Collection Initiative

continue to strain local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.

“Island Harvest Food Bank is grateful to our valued partners, PSEG Long Island, for hosting the third annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection event to help address the critical shortage of food through the summer

months for people facing food insecurity,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “With school feeding programs halted for the summer break, families already struggling to make ends meet are faced with additional challenges, and the support of PSEG Long Island, Stop & Shop, and the generosity of their customers will help ease that burden.”

Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate nonperishable food items. Collection bins and a drivethru, drop-off option will be available at each location.

The food drives will take place on Fridays as follows:

· Sept. 1 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Stop & Shop - 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport, NY

· Sept. 15 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Stop & Shop - 575 West

Montauk Highway, West Babylon, NY

Representatives from PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank will be available at all locations to provide information on low-income programs and moneysaving energy efficiency options.

Island Harvest has a need for specific items, including: Nonperishable food: Healthy varieties of canned

foods, such as low-sodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, rice, pasta, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food (no glass containers please).

Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.

Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo,

conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.

Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash. Additionally, information will be available from PSEG Long Island on electric service payment plans and programs, and ways to save money through energy

“Long Island Cars” Super Swap Sunday CAR SHOW & SWAP MEET Sunday

“Long Island Cars” Car Show & Swap Meet returns to the LICH Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville on Sunday September 10th. Hundreds of custom, collectible and classic automobiles, from the 1930’s to present, will be on display at this competitively judged event with over fifty classes and trophies. Acres of vendors will be selling auto parts, fenders, tires, auto accessories, literature and collectibles at “Long Island’s largest Swap Meet”. Cars will be offered for sale by their owners in the “Car Corral”. There will be live music, plus food and refreshments. LICH Amphitheater at Bald Hill is located at 1 Ski Run Lane in Farmingville, 11738. L.I.E. 63 North, take County Rd 83 North 1 mile and exit right, follow signs to amphitheater parking lot.
