In ‘Be Pool Smart’ Poster

Suffolk Legislator

Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored Shahzaibkahn Pathan from May Moore Primary School in Deer Park as his District winner and the County-wide Second Place winner of the 2023 Suffolk County “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the annual competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety and prevent accidental drowning by creating a poster that illustrates one or more safety tips.

Contest

Each year, one poster is selected from all of those submitted to be used as part of a countywide handout from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in its seasonal safety campaign. Entries were submitted by students from throughout Legislator Donnelly’s district and Shahzaibkahn Pathan’s was selected as the local winner. His poster was then chosen from all the local district winners as Suffolk County’s Second Place winner. He name was read into the record at the Legislature’s General

Meeting on June 6 in Hauppauge and Legislator Donnelly honored him at May Moore on June 8.

“The ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest is great way to remind and engage children about the importance of following the rules around swimming pools so they are truly able to both stay safe and enjoy the fun of summer,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Shahzaibkahn’s poster was fun, information and creative, and I thank him for using his talents to help make this a safer summer for everyone.”

Legislator Donnelly Encourages Registration For Distinguished Youth Award Program

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is encouraging local youths between the ages of 13 and 18 to register for the 202324 Distinguished Youth Award (DYA) Program.

Through the DYA program, County youths embark on and/or continue their personal growth journeys through a variety of programs that give them chances to become more actively involved in their communities. Upon completion of the program, youths are

recognized in a special ceremony and receive medals, Proclamations and other honors.

Established by Legislative Resolution 419-2017, the innovative program focuses on Volunteer Service, Personal Development, Exploration and Physical Fitness. Students commit to completing requirements in two, three or all four categories for Bronze, Silver or Gold recognition. Each category can require up to 100 or more hours of activity that must be

logged and certified. Interested youths can find the application, and more information by visiting www.scnylegislature. us/896/DistinguishedYouth-Award or contacting Legislator Donnelly’s office at (631) 854-4433.

“The DYA program provides our young people with an excellent opportunity to truly be involved in the community,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I encourage all local youths to participate.”

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a

competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home.

Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare

better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

This may cause your gutters to fall off your home, leaving your house vulnerable to leaks and cracks. Finally, make sure that all your windows and doors can lock & are airtight. Water should not be able to infiltrate through these openings. Make sure the soil around your window wells is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. 2023 Sandcastle Contest To Be Held At Hither Hills State Park

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2023 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park. The contest will be held each Thursday through August 31, 2023. Sand

sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials native to the beach.

Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Trust, the program’s sponsor. Each week’s prizes will be awarded for the best

sculptors and castles in several categories.

Registration is held each Thursday 9:30AM at Hither Hills State Park Visitors Center. A $10.00 Vehicle Use Fee will be in effect.
