My Little Corner of LI

Much has been written about the expense of living on Long Island, especially for us young-ish folk who have only recently set out on our own, away from the comfy confines of our childhood homes. I know plenty of fellow Lindy friends who have moved across the country upon graduating, precisely for this reason; however, just as many remain in the area, toughing out life on LI. Our mission: to make ends meet so as not to be forced to flee this island oasis that we call home. Sure, you may indeed get more for your money elsewhere; but where else can you be equidistant from the great landmarks of Manhattan and the beautiful beaches of Montauk? A mere vacation getaway for some, we are fortunate to reside here year round, through all four seasons of splendor. In that sense, there
are some perks you simply can’t put a price on. As often as I think I am paying way too much to live in my one bedroom apartment, when I take a look at the pristine grounds surrounding me, I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. Nearly five years later, my little haven is quite completely furnished, and I have accumulated enough seasonal decor to last a lifetime, maybe two. Closet space… well, that’s another matter entirely. To think I have managed to fill every square inch of available storage in such a short span of time; well, it’s really pretty impressive (said she sheepishly). First item on the autumn “To Do” list: purge those closets, drawers and unreachable shelves of anything unnecessary. Consolidate, donate; whatever it takes to create a little more
breathing room. And stay away from those sales, more importantly, or we’ll be right back in the same boat a few months down the line. Perhaps my favorite space of all, though, is my little outdoor deck. While the view consists mainly of a parking lot and other surrounding apartments, I have made it my mission to fill the area with plants in every corner, twinkly white lights, solar garden ornaments - and of course my aqua-colored Adirondack chairs, the perfect accessory for all seasons. Many a summer day has been spent lounging here, listening to the sounds of birds chirping in the nearby tree, squirrels scurrying to and fro and watching the sun’s glow rise and fall as the hours pass. Living on Long Island… it ain’t for everyone, to be sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

On Friday, July 21st, for the 10th consecutive year, thousands rode through the streets of Babylon alongside proud veterans to support wounded service members. This year’s event had over 1,500 riders participate alongside more than 50 wounded Veterans. Since the first Soldier Ride in 2008, over $750,000 has been raised for injured service members. The Town of Babylon is proud to announce that 50% of the funds raised at this year’s Soldier Ride with go directly to Suffolk County United Veteran (SCUV), a project of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. This year a check for $85,000 was presented to Jenifer Silva, Wounded Warrior Projects Chief Program Officer from the Town of Babylon
This year’s ride kicked off at the Babylon Town Hall. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer welcomed the veterans and riders to the event and spoke of how proud we are of all our veterans and participants. Adam Faine, the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride Manger, presented Matias Ferreira with an official Wounded Warrior Cycling Jersey and he was also presented with a Proclamation from Supervisor Schaffer. Mr. Ferreira, a former Marine who lost both legs in Afghanistan, became a Suffolk County Police officer in March of 2017. Wounded Warrior Spokesperson and Veteran Jeremiah Pauley spoke to the crowd about the struggles veterans face when returning from combat. Mr. Pauley was
deployed to Tal Afar, Iraq where he was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) which sent shrapnel into his right arm above the elbow. Also speaking were Councilwoman and Veteran Jackie Gordon and County Executive Steve Bellone. The Wounded Warrior Project provides services to service members, in both the United States and internationally, who have been injured during combat and works to raise awareness regarding issues that affect them as they continue to adjust to their new life. Residential Repair Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro is pleased to inform local senior citizens about town-based programs designed to help them maintain and stay in their homes. Both the Babylon and Huntington programs offer free craftsmen who are available by appointment to provide simple home repairs and installations for residents aged 60 and older. Many services can be provided, with the exception of those that require the skills of a licensed craftsman. “Owning and maintaining a home can be a tremendous physical and financial burden,” Legislator D’Amaro said. “However, these programs make it easier for seniors to stay in the homes that they have lived and raised their families in for their entire lives.” Eligible residents must reside in the Town of Babylon or

strong showings at DECA’s Suffolk County Regional Competition, the State Career Conference in Rochester and the International Career Development Conference
in Anaheim, California. Each was presented with a certificate by business teacher and DECA adviser Gregory Menig.
Fabulous French Students Fifteen Deer Park high school and middle school students were named winners in the 2017 edition of Le Grand Concours National French Contest. Recognized were Deer Park High School students Dana Berhalter, Rebecca Fox, James Raymond, Sameer Riaz and Catherine Taipe, and Robert Frost Middle School students Stanley Desir, Saima Hoque, Annie Jeanite,
Deborah Oke, Kelissa Rendell, Katrina Rivera, Salar Saeed, Catarina Silva, Adam Stevens and Esteysey Yanes Amaya. Le Grand Concours is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. French students in grades 1-12, in all 50 states and abroad, take a written test and compete against students with similar educational background
for prizes. Accompanied by French teacher Kimberly Lecamus, the students attended the Le Grand Concours awards ceremony. They were also honored by Deer Park’s Board of Education at a June business meeting, and presented with certificates by Ashley Rosenberg, the district’s curriculum associate for world languages.
