I am excited to continue the great work in supporting our students in becoming lifelong learners and helping them reach their fullest potential with the best team of teachers and staff at May Moore.”

Tammy Alcalde has been named the new principal of Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School, replacing Philip Paniccia, the district’s current administrator of elementary special education. Alcalde had served as associate principal for both May Moore and John Quincy Adams Primary Schools since 2019. Prior to that, she had worked for 15 years as a general education teacher in kindergarten and first grade as well as an instructional support teacher in the Longwood Central School District in Middle Island. Alcalde, who resides in Middle Island, earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education

Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun!
whatever needs to be done at that time. However, members can be found working on equipment and projects throughout their free time! Even if you don’t have an interest in railroading, you might find a job you’ll enjoy doing around the track. Long Island Live Steamers is in need of volunteer electricians, grounds-keepers, carpenters, signal maintainers and many other skilled individuals.
Although thousands of visitors enjoy visiting and riding on their railroad every year, most Long Islanders have either never heard of this organizaiton, or if they have, have yet to visit them on one of their Public Run Days. Long Island Live Steamers may well be the best kept secret on Long Island. Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members. Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home.
