Funds for this program come from a federal government disaster recovery appropriation to help the State of New York with unmet storm recovery needs. The federal government requires the State of New York to ensure that applicants are not paid twice for repairs. Thus, any proceeds from another federal source, charitable source, and/or private insurance received for storm damage to the subject will be deducted from any eventual NY Rising award. The Rental Properties Program is part of GOSR’s larger NY Rising Housing Recovery Program,
which began accepting applications from single family homeowners in April 2013. Established in June 2013, GOSR additionally oversees the NY Rising Small Business, Community Reconstruction and

The Blanket By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, it’s more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grass… pretty much anywhere it’s been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday. Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequa’s John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited. Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the
obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect. Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on. The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began. Ah, but there still
remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot – all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes. As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. “The next time they forecast ‘a chance’ of anything, let’s do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.” As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. It’s still a bit damp.

Raising Funds For Camp
On July 13th, Liz Holzknecht, a Mineola resident, presented a check in the amount of $3,500 to Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Ms. Holzknecht participated in the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon in Boston on June 8th as a way to raise funds and awareness for the camp. Ms. Holzknecht and her family have a special connection to Camp PaQua-Tuck. Her sister Kate attended the camp’s respite
weekends and summer sessions for eight years. On September 2013, Kate passed away at the age of 23. The camp held a special memorial ceremony in her honor and, on March 28th, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws held the Spring Fling Joy Prom in her honor. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help
these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Training in the Immediate Disaster Case Management Program (IDCM) was held last month at Family & Children’s Association, one of Long Island’s largest health and human service organizations, to prepare staff and individuals from partner agencies to become Case Managers and Case Supervisors. These case managers/supervisors will be able to quickly mobilize to offer assistance in the event a presidentiallydeclared disaster and/or support is requested by the Governor. The IDCM
is a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families (ACF). Participating in the three-day training alongside Family & Children’s staff, were representatives from Hope Worldwide, the Arab American Family Support Center and several other
nonprofits. As part of the IDCM Team, Family & Children’s staff may be deployed for up to 14 days. According to Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, President/CEO of Family & Children’s Association, “participation and leadership in the IDCM is in keeping with our mission is to protect and strengthen Long Island’s most vulnerable children, seniors and families. We’re here to serve Long Islanders in crisis whether it is financial, emotional or environmental.”

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory participated in the opening day ceremony for the Shiloh Community Farmers Market at the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Wyandanch. The Shiloh Community Farmers Market, located at 221 Merritt Avenue in Wyandanch, will be open on Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. until October. Since 2012, the New Shiloh Baptist Church has worked with the Albanese Organization, Wyandanch Community Development Corporation and Sustainable Long Island to provide area residents with convenient access to locally-grown
produce. Fresh fruits and vegetables are brought in for sale by Long Island farmers: Philip Schmitt & Sons, Anderson Farms, Natural Earth Farms and Milk Pail Farms. According to Sondra Cochran, Executive Director of the Wyandanch Community Development Center, the Shiloh Community Farmer’s Market project has created and improved economic opportunity for Wyandanch and the surrounding community by increasing access to fresh, healthy, affordable produce and providing jobs and job training opportunities for community youth. On July 25th, Mrs. Narrie Carter is turning 90 years young. She is a great great grandmother, whose children are acknowledging and celebrating her many years of gained experience and life lessons on July 26th with an intimate dinner at Rare 650 in Syosset. Mr. & Mrs. Carter were a young, handsome couple from Durham, North Carolina, born during the Great Depression. They met at a dance, fell in love and got married, and started a young family of two girls and a boy. During World War
II, their lives were interrupted when Mr. Carter was drafted into the Army; fortunately, he did not fight in the war and was honorably discharged. However, their lives and future were stifled from the ills of the Jim Crow South and its economic limitations. On the invite of her uncle, Mr. & Mrs. Carter traveled north, as many of their generation did, part of the great migration of
many African Americans from south to north to seek economic growth and opportunity. Long Island, New York is where they ultimately buried their seeds of faith and hope, obtained stable employment at Pilgrim Psychiatric Hospital, and were able to accomplish their dream of buying land, later building their split level home to raise their second, younger set, of two boys and girl in Babylon Village. In fact, Mr. & Mrs. Carter were informed many years ago by the deceased Mayor of Babylon Village, Donald Conroy, that they were the first blacks to buy land and build a home in Babylon Village. Since Mr. Carter’s passing in 1989, the family home is still resided in by Mrs. Carter and several of her children. Her family wishes to express their honor, pride and respect for Mrs. Carter, who, along with her husband, made their dreams for their children’s futures a reality.

The existing EVCS located in the Administration parking garage stations were provided to the University through Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2013 Charge New York Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to create a statewide network of up to 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next five years and to put up to 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road during that period. SBU charging station fee is $3 per hour, per space; instructions are located at the station, and all vehicles parked in an EVCS space must be charging. “The new charging stations have been installed in close
proximity to the Academic Mall, thereby encouraging our community to utilize plug-in vehicles which have less of an impact on the natural environment,” explained James Ambroise, SBU Transportation & Parking Site Manager. Stony Brook University will add six new electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) on main campus by this summer, bringing the total number of EVCS at on campus to 10. The new charging stations compliment the University’s four existing stations, which are located at the Advanced Energy Center in the Research and Development Park installed approximately three years ago.
