Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that they are hosting the 45th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament comprised of 6-player coed teams. This event will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023 and will be held rain or shine.
The tournament will begin at 9:00AM on the volleyball courts at Central Mall Field 4 at Jones Beach State Park. The first round of matches will be played as a round robin. All teams are guaranteed to play seven games. The top two teams from each round robin bracket will advance on to the quarterfinals which will decide the two final teams. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams. The 3rd and 4th place teams will receive merchandise prizes.
Registration is FREE and is open until the roster is full. Players must be 14 years old or older to participate. Players of all skill levels are welcome to play and will be seeded accordingly. To register, please send your legible, completed application either by mail to Volleyball

Pride And Perseverance Mark Deer Park’s 60th Commencement
For the Class of 2023, Deer Park High School’s 60th commencement on June 22 proved as unconventional as the seniors’ high school experience. Inclement weather forced the ceremony indoors in the high school auditorium, but it did not dampen the spirits of the gathered soonto-be graduates or their immensely proud families.
While the location was different, much was familiar in the joyous ceremony, from the bagpipes of the Roisin Dubh Pipe Band kicking it off, to the patriotic nods of Steven Mendell leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Gabrielle Mayne singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” to the traditional handing out of diplomas, turning tassels and tossing caps.
“Today is our last actual day as Deer Park students,” said Senior Class President Kayley Eising, who was first up to speak. “Today is a day
of reflection and gratitude as we say goodbye to these familiar hallways and embrace the next chapter of our lives. As scary as it may seem, we should be incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished and all that we have to look forward to.”
On a day in which the seniors were poised between past and future, salutatorian Sara Naqvi reflected on the latter.
“There’s a subtle strength that elements of our past hold, whether they be experiences or the people we’ve met,” Naqvi said. “These memories and artifacts of the past will take us far in unexpected ways. Our past contains the people who shaped us, peers engaged in friendly competition and teachers committed to connecting with us. I’m sure the difficulties we face will be remembered, but ultimately, don’t let hardships overshadow
the beauty of those that taught us to embrace the challenges.”
Valedictorian Sophia Zoraksh offered a suggestion to her classmates intertwined with a powerful story of her family’s experience as immigrants.
“As we stand at this crossroad, I would like to offer you some encouraging advice,” Zoraksh said. “Find something that motivates you to keep learning, keep growing, keep pushing you through life to become the person that you envision yourself to be. For me, it was my family. When my family left war-torn Afghanistan over 30 years ago, they had no idea what their life would become. Their stories are similar to many immigrants in the United States: learning a new language, adjusting to a different culture, and struggling to receive an education and make ends meet. They simply knew
that they would work hard day and night to provide a better life for their children and grandchildren, dreaming that one day they would make something of themselves. They sacrificed so much in order to give our generations the life they never had. I give thanks to Allah for allowing me to stand here before you all as valedictorian, to honor and represent not only their legacy, but to represent and be a beacon of hope for the girls in Afghanistan who do not have the privilege to receive an education like I did. I did it for them.”
The day’s guest speaker was returning Deer Park Class of 2013 valedictorian Tyler Doogan, who went on earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Buffalo and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at Texas A&M University.
“Regardless of what lies ahead of you, I implore you
to continue the educational journey that you’ve been on,” Doogan told the current seniors. “The world we live in is ever evolving, and you should be too.”
Superintendent James Cummings discussed the many challenges faced by the graduates, and affirmed the renewed importance of health and happiness.
“As you conclude what can only be considered an unconventional high school career, I hope you take the lessons that you learned within these walls, and carve out a wonderful life for yourself,” Cummings said, before offering a memorable list of final pieces of advice.”
Principal Charles Cobb addressed his charges for the last time, encouraging them to celebrate the culmination of their hard work and dedication.
“You have persevered through countless challenges and obstacles, and as a result, you have
achieved a significant milestone in your lives,” Cobb said. “Graduating high school is no easy feat, and you should be proud of yourselves for making it to this point.
As you move forward into the next phase of your lives, I want to remind you of the importance of resilience, adaptability and perseverance. These are the qualities that will help you navigate the unpredictable journey that is life. Lastly, I want to remind you that the world needs your unique talents, perspectives and contributions. You are the future leaders, innovators and changemakers of our society. As you leave this stage and embark on the next chapter of your lives, I want you to know that we are proud of you, we believe in you and we cannot wait to see all that you will accomplish.”

The graduating eighth grade members of the Library Leaders Club at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School were thanked for volunteering at the school’s library and rewarded with special field trip to the New York Public Library to see the “The Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library’s Treasures.”
During the visit, the
eighth graders viewed fascinating historical items taken from the NYPL’s centuries-spanning archives, including Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten draft of the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, cuneiform tablets thousands of years old, a lock of Beethoven’s hair, the first Gutenberg Bible brought to the Americas, Charles Dickens’ writing
desk and the original stuffed animals that inspired the Winnie-thePooh stories.
“This amazing group of eighth graders donated so much of their time to the Frost library, and it will not be the same without them next year,” library media specialist Anne Lotito-Schuh said.

2023 Paddle Battle LI Event Saturday, July 29th
The New York Marine Rescue Center is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 2023 Paddle Battle LI Event on Saturday, July 29th along the Peconic River in Riverhead, NY.
It’s a race to save the Sea Turtles! This family friendly event includes a 2.5-mile amateur race and a 5-mile competitive race course. First place medals will be offered to winners in each category, for each class and distance. We also have our Casual Paddle! This is not a race it’s just a great way for family and friends to get together and paddle casually on the beautiful Peconic River!
There is also a great opportunity for companies, organizations and unions to participate in the “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.” This 2.5 mile stand up paddle board and kayak race
designed for teams of four competitors to compete against one another for the Team Challenge trophy. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the bragging rights of winning the 2023 “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.”

Registration starts at 7:30am on the Peconic Waterfront – Entry fees are $95/pp before the race day, or $105 on the event day. Rental canoes and kayaks are available for $40. About the New York Marine Rescue Center:
The New York Marine Rescue Center is a rescue and rehabilitation organization that promotes marine conservation. Our mission is to preserve and protect the marine environment through conservation efforts including rescue, rehabilitation, education and research. As a 501(c)3 non-profit, we are the primary responders for sick or injured seals, sea turtles, dolphins, porpoises and small toothed whales, and maintain the only marine mammal and sea turtle rehabilitation center in New York State.
