Battle Of The Schools
Deer Park’s three elementary schools – John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, John Quincy Adams Primary School and May Moore Primary School
– recently competed in a Battle of the Schools sports night competition,
held at the high school. The competition consisted of staff members from each school battling it out for first place by participating in silly events such as Hula Hoop Chain; Hungry, Hungry Hippos; and Pigs in a Blanket.
Deer Park staff, district administrators and board of education president Donna Marie Elliot served as referees. In the end, May Moore took the first-place trophy home, with JFK claiming second place and JQA finishing third.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.
The non-profit organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.
“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacrifice so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”
It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

further their mission, there are two upcoming events, one online and one in person, which o er a great way to do so.
Giving Bark Thursday: Held on July 13, this is a 24-hour online event geared towards raising awareness and funds for America’s VetDogs. Throughout the day, anyone who makes a donation on their website (up to $30,000) will have their donation matched. Additionally, if you would like to create your own fundraiser, in hopes to raise funds on this special day, you can do so by clicking “Become a Giving Bark Fundraiser” at VetDogs.org/GivingBark.
America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk: You can also help America’s VetDogs make a di erence in the lives of veterans and first responders by participating in the 9th America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk, held on July 29 at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. This 5K is an In-Person and Virtual Event and dogs are welcome to join you on your run/walk too! All top runners in each age category will receive a limitededition America’s VetDogs 20th Anniversary medal. Learn more and register for the event at Run.VetDogs.org.

Second Graders Participate In Postcard Project
POSTCARD PROJECT - Last summer, teacher Dana Grafstein of Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School joined a group of second-grade teachers from 40 different states in the U.S. for a postcard project to help students learn about each state. Using facts about New York, Grafstein typed up postcards to send out to the classes in each of the other participating states. After reading each postcard, Graftstein and her students pin the state on a map and attach the card. “We have been receiving postcards over the past couple of weeks, and my students are so excited to learn about the states and what second-grade classes are like in different parts of the country,” Grafstein said. “Some of them are so different.” Photo courtesy of Deer Park School District

213 pounds of food that was donated to Island Harvest in his honor.
“Grandpa Tony is truly amazing and I am very lucky to have him,” Leggio said. “He is generous and kindhearted, and the kids
look forward to him coming in every day. In honor of his birthday, we wanted to acknowledge him and all the wonderful things he does for others by supporting a cause near and dear to his heart and helping others in need.

Deer Park High School Recognizes Spring Athletes
Deer Park High School celebrated its athletes at its spring varsity sports awards, held in the school auditorium on June 8. Athletic Director Dominick Fontana congratulated the athletes on all of their accomplishments and thanked the parents for their dedication and unwavering support.
The Unified basketball and bowling teams were first called to the stage to be recognized for a
fantastic season. The eight spring varsity teams were then recognized and four athletes per team were awarded plaques for the Most Improved Player, Sportsmanship Award, Coach’s Award and most valuable player. Additional awards were also handed out to special players.

Town Of Babylon Boosts Boater Safety
Town Announces Participation In Operation Dry Water And Renames Bay Constable Vessel For Brianna Lieneck
The Town of Babylon, alongside Bay Constables from the Public Safety Department and boater safety advocate Gina Lieneck, hosted an event at Tanner Park Marina to raise awareness about the importance of boater safety. A crucial part of this is preventing boating while impaired (BWI), the leading cause of injuries and tragic incidents on waterways. To combat this, the Town announced their participation in Operation
Dry Water from July 1-3 to remind the public of the importance of boating while sober and adhering to regulations to avoid devastating impacts.
“Operation Dry Water is a year-round national campaign centered on raising awareness and enforcement of boating under the influence,” said Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney. “It focuses on reducing the number of incidents and fatalities
related to drug or alcohol use on the water. Alcohol and drugs can turn a great day on the water into the tragedy of a lifetime.”
In addition to the announcement of Operation Dry Water, the Town of Babylon renamed one of the Bay Constable vessels in honor of Gina Lieneck’s daughter, Brianna, who was tragically killed in a boating incident involving an impaired driver. Since her daughter’s passing, Gina has been a
pivotal force in boating safety and helped pass Brianna’s Law in 2019, requiring all operators of motorized watercraft to complete a state-approved boating safety course.
Gina was pleasantly surprised with the vessel renaming of The Breezy Brianna and thanked the Town of Babylon for their continued partnership in the fight for boater safety.
“The Breezy Brianna will be out on the Great South Bay all summer
long, making sure that boaters operate sober and safely,” said Councilman McSweeney. “The boat shall carry her name as a symbol, remembrance and testament to our commitment to safer boater practices in our community.”
“We need to start holding people accountable for their actions,” said Gina Lieneck. “If we give them a lesson, this can deter them from getting on the boat and drinking or being
under the influence of drugs. There is no reason why we should not have sensible laws in place, and there is no reason why people should get away with killing someone or injuring them.”
The Town of Babylon looks forward to promoting boater safety throughout the summer and participating in Operation Dry Water in the beginning of July.

2023 Sandcastle Contest To Be Held At Hither Hills State Park
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2023 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park. The contest will be held each Thursday beginning June 29 through August 31, 2023. Sand sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials native to the beach.
Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Trust, the program’s sponsor. Each week’s prizes will
be awarded for the best sculptors and castles in several categories.
Registration is held each Thursday 9:30AM at Hither Hills State Park Visitors Center. A $10.00
Vehicle Use Fee will be in effect.

A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a life-affirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10, from 7 pm to 8 pm.
The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by Dee MacDonald, a funny
romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree it’s about time they had a holiday to remember…and they do as they set forth in Europe in a used recreational vehicle.
The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild of Adelphi Hotline Volunteer Lynne Borah from Plainview. Borah,
a 20-year breast cancer survivor, says “Reading is my favorite getaway,” which is why she decided to start the book club to help others escape from any difficulties they are having.
